Quilt paterns
Do you tend to use a quilt pattern only once? Or do you reuse the quilt pattern using different fabrics? I sometimes find making it once is enough and move on to a different one.
Some patterns I use only once. I have one that I have used 5 times. It just depends.
I tend to make an item only one time. However, my closest relatives live in 3 different states. So sometimes I make the same thing for each of them :)
Sometimes only once but most of the time I will make another one - depends on the pattern and the person its intended for.
I have a couple of go to patterns or techniques that I use for a quick gift or donation if needed. Mostly to use up scraps.
Rarely do I make a pattern more that once. I like to try different patterns and techniques. I have to do that or I will never get even half of the patterns I have collected done. I have 3 notebooks full of quilts I want to make. Wish me luck.

With rare exception, all the quilt patterns I buy since I started (in the mid-1990's) I intended to make at least three of (in different colorways). I have a large number of patterns+plus (fabric and pattern), though, half of which I made additional ones from my stash and the other half were used just for the one-shot-wonder.

What, use a pattern... I'm the 'pattern collector' and seem to never find time to actually use the pattern! I have notebooks and files and notebooks and files full of downloaded patterns, too.

The only pattern I've made more than once is Turning Twenty. I've made several quilts for Project Linus using different themed FQs. I also used Turning Twenty surrounding a panel when I wanted to make a Steam Engine quilt for a dear friend's husband, again using the themed fabric.
There are too many patterns I want to try to keep repeating the same pattern all the time.:) |
Patterns? I have attempted to use them but when I try to follow the directions, something goes wrong. I always somehow alter them and end up with a different quilt. So I guess my answer is no I don't use the same one twice as I can't seem to even use it once. LOL And I am a pattern collector also.
So far, I have used a very different pattern each time I have made a quilt. I enjoy the variety.
I have made one pattern about 6 times, another about 4 and a couple 2 times. I use some others and make up my own too. Just waht strikes my fancy.
Some favorites of mine are Trip Around the World, and the Log Cabin which I have made several of each and never get tired of them.
Mostly I don't use a pattern, I just "wing" it. sometimes I do look at pictures.
I have favorite patterns that I make. Different fabrics can change the pattern. Using soft colors and brights on the same pattern give it a different look.
I have made a couple Sun Bonnet Sue quilts and Dresden Plates; although each ended up being completely different. Other than those, I tend to use a new pattern with each quilt. There are so many endless possabilities. My files are full, always saving patterns from the internet and site...then I have books and individual patterns. LOL.

I might use it twice if I have different fabric. I like trying new patterns and techniques' some are frustrating, but when the light comes on, it brightens up my day knowing that I have mastered yet another technique! :)
Humm, since I have not been quilting too awful long I have only used mine once...except for the 10 minute block patterns. But, I have a few that I will definately make again.
Humm....I've made two lonestars, 3 rebel flag quilts(no pattern had to make it up myself). D9P I've done 3, And then theres many that I've only done once. Like some of the others have stated I like to learn new techniques.

For charity quilts there are a few patterns that I have used many times. For myself, I only want one quilt with a pattern.
I agree, except for rag quilts or Log Cabin. I could do many of these!
It depends on how much I like something. I like to try different things but sometimes if I'm in a rush for something I know the pattern so it goes quicker. Sue
I do make different versions of one pattern -- but color is not the only thing I change, I usually change some of the elements of the quilt as well.
I am so glad I am not the only pattern collector! Have a lifetime of patterns and not enough time...lol.
Once I make something once the challenge is gone. Only the Baltimore blocks do I sometimes use more than once. Such a waste of money since patterns are pricey but I can't design a pattern so I have to purchase them.
So far I have only used 2 patterns more than once...Tumbler and DP9 , I have too many I want to try. I am now working on Card Trick in Queen.

Same here! |
I think I have made 6 OBW because they all turn out so different. I have also made several 9 patch pizzaz quilts. Both are not difficult. Right now I have a spider web quilt half way done. It is great using up stash fabrics. I may make another of those.
I usually only use the pattern once. I have to many quilts on my 'to do list' I want to make.
I have a file of purchased patterns of favorites that I fall back on when I need a pattern and use them several times for a quick quilt. I like to make my own applique patterns and I have a file that is 6 inches thick of patterns since I started quilting.
I usually get on a roll and whip up the same pattern 2-3 times with diff fabrics and then lose interest after that many
Most of the time "once" except for log cabin or 9 patch, there is just so many ways to set a log cabin I think one could do them hundreds of times and still not repeat a layout. With 9 patch I usually put the 9 patch in the center of a block and then piece triangles or rectangles or both to change the look.
I have used the Disappearing 4 patch several times.
Sometimes I use a pattern more than once. I made a cute dog quilt for my dd friend; another of her friends (different group) got the same quilt in a different color. I have fabric for 1 more and hope to make it for my dgd. Guess if I like the pattern and it is fun, I'll use it again. If I don't enjoy making the quilt, I'm ready to move on to a different pattern.
So far I've used some of my patterns more than once, but I get excited about trying something new. Since I want to try new patterns, I think I might try a sampler soon.
I have made this Turning Twenty quilt at least 10 times, it is very fast, easy and you can put any colors in it. I made it 7 times one christmas for the grandkids in the family. I love the pattern and also bought another of her books.
I have too many patterns collected to use the same one over. I will never get to make them all if I use one pattern over and over. However, I do have one pattern that I like that I have used more than once.
