I just did a square dance with blue and green batiks for my 26 year old. Turned out real nice for a guy. - Photo attached, and easy!

Hi Diana! I think the problem your having is not that your overthinking it but that there are so many choices. I like Delectable Mountains (it's on my to-do list) but think the Gentlemans Fancy is really a great one with two colors. What about picking a few and then asking your son which he likes best? XO
|
Sheree, you're right - there are way too many choices!!! lol!!!!!
I'm making the Gentlemans Fancy. Finally have 6 blocks done! Yay!! I'm using 6 different fabrics, like the pattern on Quilter's Cache. It's 6 rows to sew together for each block, seems like they take quite awhile to do! lol!!!! Mareliba, you're quilt is beautiful!!!! :D :D |
Good! You really are quick! Can't wait to see it.

I made one like this one for my nephew's college graduation. He loved it...
so he has told me. It is the log cabin from Donna Poster's "foldy stuff" patterns. I did it in homespun plaids. It is quite manish..... I also made my son a Harley Davidson T'shirt quilt....also using some of his shirt,...did not quilt it. I used all his Harley buttons that I could find !!!!! I will try to get the pics in, If possible.... here's hoping. MJ in NJ |
I did a Carpenter's Wheel for my 26 year old son in shades of blue. Didn't turn out girly at all. Here's some pictures of it:

Bear claws are great in plaids for a guy. My 32 year old has one I made for him when he went off to college and it's now on the back of his recliner. He wraps his three kids in it when they crawl up on his lap in the winter. Yes, it does get cold in Florida...sometimes.

I made a Yellow Brick Road quilt for my dad using browns and greens. It was very "manly" and the pattern is a lot of fun to do. You don't have to tell him it is called Yellow Brick Road.

I have two sons , I made them both a rag quilt from denium / flannel
. Most of the denium I used was fro their old jeans .... go green... they are holding up pretty well + did not have to "quilt" them ... JUST do your self a favor IF You do one from denium ... take it to the largest commerical washer you can find, I nearly killed my washing machine with the "fiber"cigars it rolled up under the adjitatior....LOL now not so funny then ... I will attempt to post pics of one both sides showing ... Good Luck Sandy J |
how about the tried and true log cabin? I had made squares as samples when I taught a class and my son loved them, so am now putting them together into a quilt---1 side of the cabin is light to dark blue, the other side is light to dark green.

Barb do you have the pattern for nates quilt? or the name of the pattern I would love to make a quilt like that

I am just finishing the quilting on a Bento Box quilt I made for my 32 yr old son. I made it with blue batiks. It went together very fast.
|
Are you going to show us your blocks?
My mom quilted by hand and had several quilts finished. I had 8 siblings and she let them pick out a quilt that they liked. The last 2 boys had the hardest time deciding. It is funny how peoples' taste aren't always what you would think. |
Yes she is, but she isn't doing much for quilting now, just helping us if we ask her. She does do weaving and is slowly working on that again.
|
You all have such great ideas!!!! Thank you so much!! I'm sure there's lots of people getting ideas from this too!! :D :D
I love how my 'Gentleman's Fancy' is looking so far, and I showed my son's girlfriend yesterday, and she really likes it too! I have only eight blocks done so far, and wish I could post a picture!! There is soooo much cutting and sewing with this block though! I prefer the quick and easy ones! lol!!!! I'll have my DH figure out what's wrong with my camera when he gets home, and post a picture! :D |
Hello Donna,
I just saw your answer to MollieSue regarding her quest for a quilt pattern for an adult son. I wanted to do a storm at sea for my youngest son, who is in his first year of college out of town. I looked fevorishly for a pattern and could only find some pictures, no patterns or some very dark pictures with no yardage or directions. Eventually a quilting sister in New Hampshire sent me an old book she had with a pattern but it has too many pieces and is a very old pattern which I know has now been updated. Another quilting sister recently found a book with a variation of the storm at sea which is very helpful but I was wondering if you might be able to help me with just one more pattern and directions? My son did not want ot take it to college so I have plenty of time to finish it. I had bought my material a long time ago when the thought first came to me to make him one. I know from the other pattern book that I do not have enough of the difrent materials but I am willing to play with what I have and see how it comes out. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Annz |
Hi Annz,
Here is a Storm at Sea pattern, from quilter's cache. Is this more like what you're looking for? http://quilterscache.com/S/StormAtSeaBlock.html :D |

Wow!!!! Very, very nice, MJ!!! :D :D
This is going to be a wealth of info for anyone needing ideas for a guy's quilt!! :D |
MJ,
I really love the plaid one. I have a stack of plaid brushed wovens that I've been collecting. I hadn't realized how great the log cabin would look in them. How is the Foldy Stuff method different? I'll have to explore that. :D |
zkosh
Here is the site of Donna Poster and her "foldy stuff" patterns They were interesting to do and came out pretty good http://donnaposter.com/ mj |
Thanks, MJ. That looks really interesting. :D
|
This is really cool. Does this pattern have a specific name? I'd love to make this for my son.
Thanks :) |
For the Men , I use bargello patterns. They do not come across to them as "girlie". I made one for my college graduating nephew. He loved it done in greens and blues.

My avatar is a bargello I made for my oldest son. My younger son also got one both in the masculine colors they chose.

Make a twister the big one. Use plaids. I did one in homespun's and my hubby liked it so muck he wanted iy enlarged for our king. You would think it would be slow but it wasn't went together fast and I didn't use layer cakes (haha never saw a homespun layer cake) like they suggested. Pick up a couple of manly cakes and poof even faster!

Tradewinds in rusts, greens(or blues) and cream.. I only made two blocks in my son's quilt and I loved them. I'd like to do a whole one. He liked his sister's full size Carpenter Star, so he got a small one. The Tradewinds are in the center on the sides. The star is the lower center.

I did a double Irish Chain for our son and he loved it here is the link to see it http://californiaquilting.blogspot.c...max-results=20
It is the last quilt on that blog entry. I am at work and can't really access home pictures :) |
I like doing Fat Friday by All Washed Up for guys. It's quick and uses fat quarters, however, I love the fact that the leftovers make a Candy Bar Quilt! ...and that pattern is also included.
