I've been looking and looking, and nothing seems to be quite right.

He'll be 26th, and I just asked him if he wanted a kind of funny one with dogs, or a 'nice' one. He said he'd rather a 'nice' one, and wouldn't give me any ideas on colors, as long as it isn't girly.

He's into cars, his dog, dirt bikes, computer games, and is a cnc machinist..... But I'm thinking he wants something more classy looking.

I first thought of the monkey wrench, I've not made that pattern yet, and thought the name sounded kind of car-ish. But then thought it'd look too much. Then thought of a star, but I did similar for two DGDs.

And yes, I'm probably over thinking this again, as I did with my daughter's..... lol!!!!
Any ideas, to put me out of my misery?

what about storm at sea

DO you have any fabrics in mind or how many colors? Sometimes, I pick the fabrics first and then go looking for a block to fit.

I did this one for my son last year for Christmas. His favorite colors were black green and brown. I had already made him a quilt with the black, so he got one with the greens and browns. He loves it. I tried to find a pattern that was easy and sort of masculine. Here is what I came up with.
He will be 26 this month.

My son loves Storm AT Sea

How about Delectable Mountains done in dark plaids and a black background?

justwannaquilt 10-01-2009 01:07 PM

I like the pattern "Happy Hour"
I like this pattern also, http://www.flickr.com/photos/35289170@N06/3321423088 Look around at some of her other quilts they are AWESOME!

Good luck

ghostrider 10-01-2009 01:18 PM

How about Gentleman's Fancy? It's an easy block, with a good name, and has a nice repeat pattern either in two colors or several.

Yes, happy hour is a good one. Or how about this one?

Here's one I made with this pattern.

Diana

My friend Avis made her son a beauty it was a Mariners Compass on a black background I think I have a photo of it somewhere - I'll have to have a look on my card in my camera.
She made it in reds, oranges & greens if I remember correctly. Don't quote me on that though these senior moments are getting more & more frequent LOL.

I would give him some quilting magazines or books to thumb through and ask him to put post-it notes on quilts he likes. That may help narrow down colors and types of patterns he would like. Just be forewarned that he'll probably pick out the hardest, most complicated patterns! You might want to prescreen and handpick those magazines and books in case you don't feel up to a Mariner's Compass.......

janedennis 10-01-2009 03:44 PM

I wanted to make my DH one so took him to joanns and said pick out a fabric you like, boy was i surprised, it was asia with big white birds. Bought it and now getting the other fabrics to go with it. It was not what I expected for him to pick out. He is a lot like your son in interests, fishing, cars, boats, cars and he was a mechanuc. Take him shopping.

Check out what colours you think would look nice in his place & make a nice easy one like this. I made it for my DD's wedding, you just make a small square & surround it with a lighter or deeper tone border.

sewsewquilter 10-01-2009 04:39 PM

What about something like Eddie made for himself.

You guys are all great!!!
I looked up Storm at Sea, and looks like it has some paper piecing to it? I've never done it, and am wanting something fairly quick.
Barb, your quilt is beautiful! But I made a similar 'ribbon' quilt for my DDIL, and he'd probably think it was a girly pattern because of that. lol!!
Sewnsewer2, your quilt is really wonderful too!! I really love how you did it!!!
I've not done the D9p, and am not sure how hard that is. And I think the Mariners Compass is a bit beyond me..... lol!!!!
Ghostrider, I'm really liking your Gentlemans Fancy!! I went to quilters cache, and it's shown using more girly colors. Uncreative me wouldn't have thought how it could look with more manly colors! Thanks so much for posting the pictures of it!!
Prism99, I ought to make him pick out a pattern! He kind of backed away from even talking about it at all. I think he thinks it's weird as it's to be a birthday present, and here he is knowing about it. lol!!!!!
I think I'm leaning towards the Gentlemans Fancy. Now if I could get all of you to go and help pick out the fabric too..... lol!!!!!
I know I get totally wacked when making quilts for my kids. I think I put too much emotional significance into them.... Maybe my wackyness over making their quilts will spur them all on to get me EQ6 for Christmas!! lol!!!
Thanks so much, for all the ideas!!!! :D :D

Diana

I made this quilt for my oldest son--it is REALLY easy. If you are interested in it I could tell you how to do it.

http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/7798.page

I am making this quilt in a queen size for my youngest son. I am making it in blue, green and brown. The pattern was free on the internet and also very easy to make.

http://www.andoverfabrics.com/quiltd...way%20Cafe.pdf

I think just about any quilt you make can be masculine if you use "manly fabrics"

emmy 10-01-2009 06:18 PM

Look at the first posted here. She made it for her brother.

 Did you steal my son???? My oldest is ALL of the things you mentioned!?!?

Well, maybe not. I can't imagine my son ever wanting a "classy" quilt. Mine would get old muscle cars and hound dogs all the way.

Can't wait to see what yours gets.

k3n 10-02-2009 04:00 AM

Hi Diana - do you fancy trying a One Block Wonder? You could pick a large print in one of the themes he's interested in... :D

MollieSue 10-02-2009 05:04 AM

Thanks so much, all of you!!! :D :D
I think I'm going to do the Gentlemans Fancy. I even like the colors they've used on quilters cache, just have to take out the floral fabric... lol!!!
Marcia, you ought to put on here how you did your quilt, as I'm sure more than me wants to know!! I love it!!! :D
Lisa, your son could be brother to all three of mine! lol!!!
My youngest son (beginning of Nov) is easy - Card Trick! As he loves going to the casino! lol!!!!
Once I get done with the birthday quilts, I'm going to try the others!! - Mariner's Compas, OBWs, etc!! I have eight to do between the end of October through the beginning of February, then a bit of a lull....
Thanks again!!!! :D :D

ghostrider 10-02-2009 06:36 AM

I'm so glad I could help out in my small way, Diana! Makes me wish I still lived in Gun Plain Township. I'm sure your son will love it!

Gwyn 10-02-2009 06:49 AM

You might pm Eddie. He is a member of our group. He also does wonderful work. He might have some good ideas. He is both a classy quilter and a man.

Yesterday, I heard a gentleman say his mother made him a sunflower quilt because she thought he was the sunshine of her life.

You might go to your favorite fabric shop and ask about what other customers do for the male people in our families.

Log Cabin is ALWAYS a good bet for a man. You could do it in blues and forest greens, or browns. I am sure he would love it.

daisyboo9 10-02-2009 02:43 PM

I have been toying with the idea of doing this block a cousin of mine who is in his 50's loves cars and motorcycles etc, and is a bachelor.

http://www.quilterscache.com/B/Bache...zzleBlock.html

I even love the colours!

Harmony 10-02-2009 03:00 PM

You can't go wrong with a log cabin!

MollieSue 10-02-2009 03:10 PM

Thanks so much, for all the ideas!!!
DaisyBoo, I love that pattern you posted the link for!
I went up today and got the material for Gentleman's Fancy. Am now wishing I would have looked closer at the pattern..... Is almost all little triangles! lol!!! Am going to have to watch my seams, and am glad his birthday isn't until the 25th! lol!!! But I've got a ton cut, so now just have to piece them. :D

And Ghostrider, you could always move back..... We could have some fun!! :D :D

mamaw 10-02-2009 03:51 PM

Bear Paw is a nice one too.

MCH 10-02-2009 04:19 PM

I made both my sons and my husband quilts using the card trick block.

I mixed the fabrics among the 3 quilts such that each one had at least one from the other two quilts. Sort of "connected" all of them. None of the three of them will let anyone else "snuggle" with Mom's quilt.

Now, I have to make one for my son's fiancee...will incorporate scraps from my son's quilt into hers. :-)

Yes, we surely could, Diana!! I left lots of good things back there. But Michigan isn't really the place to move to these days, never mind trying to sell a house way out in the woodlands of New Hampshire! If I head out to visit my SIL in Roscommon, I'll give you a yell before I head up 131, deal? :D

Just think, your son's not just getting a 'nice' quilt, he's getting a 'fancy' one! He'll love it, I'm sure of that! I've used that block, along with 'Ladies Delight' and some others in a bridal shower quilt for a friend. It's not so bad, just takes some concentration is all. You'll do just fine!

MollieSue 10-02-2009 04:41 PM

What a wonderful idea, MCH!!! I can imagine how much they cherish them!!! I think that's why picking a pattern, etc, is so nerve wracking for me, when it comes to my kids. I have 20 kids/spouses, & grand kids, to do quilts for, so the odds of them getting too many from me are slim. I want to just pour the love & caring into them! lol!!!!
:D

It's a deal!! :D
Ha. Forgot people are moving out of Michigan. We're still hanging on to that 15.2% unemployment.....

jojo440 10-05-2009 06:16 AM

I made one for my son that I thought he would like with his favorite colors and when he saw it he said that he wanted a colorful one. I told him to go to my closet full of completed quilts and pick one out. The one he picked was my favorite one and the quilt I least thought he would like. Cannot predict those men. Oh well, I gave it to him and I think his son will get the rejected quilt.

ania755 10-05-2009 06:24 AM

I made this quilt for my son... (In case you want to struggle with curves)...

I believe any pattern can be adjust for a man: it depends on the colors....
.....The storm at sea is not an easy pattern but looks very nice too...
What ever you decide to do....Good luck

bearisgray 10-05-2009 06:33 AM

I think having him pick out at least one of the fabrics is a good way to start.

They do surprise one sometimes.

bebe 10-05-2009 09:19 AM

A logcabin, a sampler ,or bargello come to mind. The Underground Railroad quilt has some nice blocks. Just use homespuns or other manly colors.

treasurelady 10-05-2009 10:26 AM

Log cabin in cream, brown and black.

MollieSue 10-05-2009 04:10 PM

Thanks, all of you!!! :D
I have three blocks done so far, of the Gentlemans Fancy. It's slow going though, all those pieces! lol!!!!!!
:D

quiltmom04 10-06-2009 05:29 AM

My sons like geometric patterns. As long as the fabrics don't have flowers or look "girly", the quilt will be masculine.

nanc1 10-06-2009 05:39 AM

How about a log cabin quilt with browns, rusts, oranges and greens?
