I have my longarm in the basement. Perfect place!

My sewing room is in the basement or the dungeon as my DH calls it. Love it down due to none else sees it and I do not have to clean it up. HEHE!

I agree, you need a lot of light but, for me, everything is nearby- my ironing board, my washer/dryer, my cutting table, and my stash. You do need a dehumidifier, at least where I live, because the winters can be colder down there and the summers cam be clamier. With a dehumidifier, the temperature stays even and comfortable.

My sewing area is in the finished basment. Carpeted except where I sew. Tile floor there. No moisture at all. DH put up more lighting and like others I don't have to close up shop when I quit for a break. No smell or must. Very comfortable with TV and Radio/ CD player. Love it. Cold in the summer though. My hands do get cold in the summer.

i work in the finished basement in this house. it's been quite a change!
in the summer i need to have the dehumidifier running practically 24/7 and for winter i needed to add two wall-hung gas heaters.
i have a painted concrete floor with no water problems, but i do live in new jersey which is very humid. even with the humidity, no harm has come to my machines, if that's what you're worried about. and after a long time, fabric does get a musty smell, but it washes out.
from a mental health standpoint, it's nice and private and you can leave a mess if you want to, but it's away from the heart of the house and when you look out the windows all you see are feet.

My sis has her sewing room in the basement and loves it. She has a lot of flourescent lighting so when it is a gloomy day she turns on all the lights and sews. She has had this room for about 20 years and no problems.

My sewing room is in our unfinished basement as well. Actually it is partically finished. We don't have humidity to speak of and I don't have any problems except what was mentioned-lots of light. My quilting machine and frame is in the den in the basement and we also have a wood stove in another room down there. No problems except again-you need lots of light. I prefer the basement-it's out of the way, and you don't have to put everything away, just close the door, and it is nice and cool in the summer and with the stove going, it is nice and warm in the winter. I have a portable heater I add sometimes, but those are the only considerations I think.

I believe you were refering to my basement sewing room.
I have comercial carpeting on the floor. I also have french drains. The walls are just stucco with boards around the top of the foundation to hide the electrical wiring. I have forced how water heat on a separate zone. We also have a generator. We don't have a problem with dampness. I love it down there.

I think it will work, I have had a sewing room in to homes that were in the basement and my machines were ok. The dehumidifer is a good idea, I used one. Go for it.

sounds good, I live in WI too and have no water problem and a dehumidifier. No problem and it is not heated all the time.
