Quilt Shop in Alaska
2 Attachment(s)
Hahaha just got back from Alaska. First stop was Skagway. Wouldn't you know there was an absolutely divine quilt shop there. best thing is that DH really loved all the batik fabrics and asked if HE could pick some out! I think he did a good job. Now to design a quilt. Any thoughts??
I have been there, and it is a great shop!
For your quilt pattern, Storm at Sea comes to mind. |
Great batiks! I would want a pattern that didn't cut them up too much so the patterns in the batiks are perserved.
HUBBY has great taste in batiks. Happy quilting!
wonderful batiks!!!!
Lovely fabrics and thanks for the picture of the store. Someday I would love to visit Alaska but it is unlikely as hubby went climbing up there in his youth and has no real desire to return.
looks like a great place to visit. your fabrics are terrific... but no suggestions.
Your batiks are beautiful. I was at that shop in June. I bought a panel with all things Alaska on it. I was lucky enough to find more then one shop while on a cruise, so I limited myself to one purchase at each shop. Good luck with your quilt.
I took the train with my older sister when I was 5 to Skagway. There was no quilt shop there then!! Lol. We lived in anchorage at the time.
Sorry, no suggestions but I just wany to say his choices are delicious! Unfortunately, all I've done with batiks so far is collect them. Thery're just so interesting and beautiful.
I bought some fat quarters & 1/2 yd cuts last year - fun place!
Nice shop. Got to visit back in 2007, while on a cruise.Got a quilt kit featuring an otter. SOOO cute!
Great batiks! We went to Alaska this summer and went to that shop too. I had already bought a bunch of fabrics (batiks too) at the shop in wasilla Alaska so I only bought a Christmas tree ornament for myself and my sister. Lol. I just wanted to buy something in a quilt shop in Skagway. Oh I also bought a magnetic wooden thing to hold a needle or pin near your machine.
Beautiful Fabrics.....Great Husband...
Lisa Moore lives in Sitka and designs a lot of patterns using Alaska batiks and other Alaska fabrics. I went to both stores in Juneau this last May and bought a bunch of the same fabrics you bought. Go to www.quiltswithatwist.com and you find quite a few patterns that use large centers that preserve the images. Some of them are even free downloadable patterns.

Oh, what lovely fabrics!
I like to make quilts out of various squares, when I just want to show off the fabric. I do multiples of the smallest block size so they can all fit together (so maybe I'd do a blend of 2", 4" & 8" together; and if I really like the fabric I'd probably leave a block or two up to 10" or 12"), and I usually sketch it out on graph paper to make sure I have a sensible way to assemble it. It's pretty simple, sews up fast, and leaves enough fabric intact that I can still enjoy the original patterns. |
I've been there too and it's a great shop. There mail order service is good too. Lovely chosen fabrics.
I was there 2 yrs ago. Didn't have time to shop so just bought a kit. Had a great time making it and it hangs in my living room . It is autum colors with the bald eagle applicaded on top.
So glad you had more time. |
Those are beautiful batiks! Can hardly wait for the finished project.
Went to Alaska last year, that shop was my favorite:)
Wow...awesome find!!
Beautiful batiks. Wish the shop wasn't so far away! :-)

Maybe something like "Warm Wishes", you could use your focus fabrics for the centers of the blocks and fussy cut those. Love those fabrics, may have to order some online as my daughter just returned from a 2 week on and off shore cruise. Thanks for showing and your hubby did an awesome job on his selections. I could not locate the leavy one. Good Luck and be sure to post when completed. |
Great fabrics, but no definite pattern that I would use comes to mind.
I've been there a few times and bought several yards of fabric. At our last port of call, I load all of my treasures into a tote bag and head straight to the post office to shove it all into a flat rate shipping box to send home! Skagway really needs to open a post office closer to the quilt shop instead of way past the Red Onion Saloon.
They do have a great selection of fabrics on their website too! |

I just happen to love sampler quilts and I put them in a lot of the blocks that I make. The colors match together so nice. If'n I had more Alaskan batik, I would make a table runner or a table cloth. Napkins also, if you bought enough fabric. A pillow cover would be nice and also a bag. My mom made a bag a few years back (she's in Heaven now) and it was all done in batik. I got the bag for my sewing and it is gorgeous. That's another idea. Get out the cup of coffee and look at and feel the batik. It is such a rich feeling. Mom taught me how to feel the fabric. Better than a glass of Tawny Port!! Edie |
beautiful fabrics I love them sorry, I am too new to suggest a pattern, but I bet it will be absolutely beautiful whatever you choose, if you are starting with beautiful fabrics, the quilt has to be beautiful too.
I have been to the same shop. I loved it. DH saw a quilt on the wall and hinted broadly to get the kit. He met a cousin that was on another ship while on Skagway.
Great fabrics. I went to Alaska on a cruise this summer and come home with a duffle bag full of fabric and a package that was mailed home was waiting for me. Dh helped me pick out some things when we were in the shops.
Thanks for all the great idea! Am thinking about a simple disappearing nine patch with blue/greens. The fabric is so beautiful I don't want to carve it up. I have enough to do a throw. Any thoughts???
We are lucky enough to have about 30 quilting shops in Alaska. The fabrics you bought are designed specifically for us and are designed aand/or made for us each year. One of the quilting cruises came into Seward in august and we had agreat time visiting with them while they were here. Hope to go on one myself sometime.
Batiks are my favorites and I have heard only good things about that shop. Especially love the blue/green grouping!
Shops in Alaska are few and far between. Haven't been to Skagway yet but there is a cute shop across from the lodges outside Denali and there was a local on in Healy about 10 miles away. And then, I don't know of any till you hit the cities. But then, haven't been there in two years
We took an inside passage cruise a few years ago - it was the best trip I've been on and loved Alaska. The batiks you and your hubby picked out are really gorgeous but I don't have a pattern inspiration at this time. Have fun!
I am enjoying this thread a great deal! I live in Sitka, Alaska, and Lisa Moore is one of our good friends. We are fortunate to be able to preview her new patterns - what a treat!
Trish McGee, who owns the Rushin' Tailor shop in Skagway, winters here in Sitka also. She's a great lady who shares her designs with us also. I am delighted to share all these kind words with both these ladies. Please stop in Sitka and say hello if any of you are ever by this way again. Happy quilting!! |
HIs fabric choices are first rate! I have no idea what pattern. You will have to take him fabric shopping often-he has a good eye!

Then, I went down to Wasilla and found Sylvia's and bought a bunch more...really quite a bit. Then, I found the one in Palmer and found a couple more beautiful fabrics to buy--designed by someone from Anchorage. I only made it to those three shops, however. I was afraid to go in anymore! |

I didn't buy any batiks, however. |
Beautiful colors!

We are taking an Alaskan cruise for our 50th anniversary next July. We will be in Skagway and I can't wait to shop at the Rushin' Tailor. A friend told me about the shop. Please post a photo of your quilt when it is finished.
