I would like to make my grandmother a quilt for her bed. She is in a nursing home so it is a hospital bed. Should I make it a twin size which is a 39" x 75"? Should I shorten it up by 12" due to the end of the hospital bed and for the fact I won't need any extra for tucking it around a pillow?
Thanks! Kathleen |
I would make it wider than 39" I would go 50" just so that it keeps her covered nicely, and when she rolls over in bed, nothing gets uncovered
I also would make it atleast 70" so that it drops down at the end of the bed a bit and keep grama's feet covered JMHO :D:D:D |
I agree with Amma. Good idea to make it a bit bigger to begin with. :)

Is the bed really less than 39" wide? That seems extremely narrow, even for a hospital bed. Would there be any drape on either side, or enough for her to tuck around herself? Personally, I would keep it at least 75" long, so that there is plenty to tuck around her toes if she so chooses.

Would also take into consideration, type of batting and fabrics in case
nursing home will be laundering it .... or will you bring it home occasionally to do that? |

The hospital would launder it. She is 800 miles away. What I think I will do is make a fleece one over the next couple days and see how it is when she gets it. Then for Christmas make the quilt.
Thanks for the ideas, I will go bigger on it. :) It's all still in the planning process. lol |
Yeah, 39 sounds way too narrow. And Grannies get cold!!
You're so sweet to do this for her!! :D |
Also, take in to account the side rails on the bed. They may catch the quilt and tangle grandma. They used them for safety all the time with my mother & others who were in rehab/nursing homes.
Happy quilting, Susan |
Make sure you put her name on it in several places. My own DGM had 2 of her quilts disappear while being laundered while she was a resident of a nursing home.
