Hi quilting friends,
Somewhere on one of these topics someone was asking if it was better to make perfect quilts or just make them for practicality. It just so happens, I was looking through my stash one day and here is what came from that. I am not a perfect poet so excuse the lines if they aren’t exactly in sync. Will enclose a picture of the quilt that inspired the poem. I wanted to practice my machine quilting so just used it to experiment on, too. When I was finished, I threw it in the washing machine to get some of the stiffness out of it. Now it will be a nice enough quilt for any small child.

A QUILT STORY
By Sandy M.

As I looked through some fabric scraps
A friend had passed to me,
I found a stack of quilt blocks
As lonely as could be.

Their edges were not even
And their sizes did not match.
So she had tossed them in the box
To add them to my stash.

I looked at them a minute
And then I thought, “Why not?”
It wouldn’t take me very long
To sew them into blocks.

So I began to measure them
And found that nothing matched
But even so thought, “What the heck!”
As my sewing plans unhatched.

Often the points might overlap
But I did not get mad,
For as it came together,
It didn’t look so bad.

And just a couple hours
Was all it really took
And so I laid it on the bed
To see how it would look.

Amazed, I looked and smiled
And much to my surprise
It really looked quite lovely
To my wide-open eyes.

Then a thought popped in my head
How much like it we are,
With cut off points and crooked seams,
From perfect we’re so far.

Yet each of us is quite unique
And if we’re really truthful,
If one does not look really close.
We’re all warm, cuddly and useful.

Orphan Blocks quilt.

Pretty quilt, inspired poem. I admire anyone who can build something from nothing and have it come out beautiful and unique. My hat's off to you.

Great job dear friend! Bright, fun colors and it looks great. How did you like doing the machine quilting? You did well with the poem too. So talented. It's great that you shared that with everyone.

It was my first try at FMQ and the first thing I discovered was that my arms got really tired fast. I only tried making swirls and circles. I was amazed at how much thread it took, also. After it was finished, I did not like the quilting done so close as it made it too stiff for my liking. But I used a cotton batting and I didn't want it all bunching up. If I try another, I want to leave more room between stitching lines and will use W&N instead. Plus I want to learn how to make feathers and some other designs. Just have to find time. I love sharing things on here but there are others who are so much more talented than I. What a wonderful group.

How true your words are! I think you are doubly gifted!

The quilt is great. Is there any way you can have your poem printed on nice paper or fabric and display it with your quilt? Keeping them together just seems right.

a few hours before you posted yours! Great minds think alike, huh? I don't know what moved me to write that, it kind of just happened, LOL!

Maybe we could get a thread going with quilting poems? We could print them all off and have a nice little inspirational "book"!

Love the poem. The quilt is beautiful, nice and bright, can't believe it's made from scraps. What talent!

I'm not too good with recognizing patterns, but is there a name for that pattern or is it your pattern creation? Is it Orphaned Blocks or is that just your name for the quilt?

rwquilts 08-17-2010 05:40 AM
