When I don't have any space to work in my sewing room, I know I have too much fabric. Yet, I use a lot. This year so far (it being the beginning of May), I've already finished 20 quilts, adult-sized quilts. These are going to a homeless shelter. I don't buy fabric on speculation anymore and haven't for years. I only buy if I need something for a quilt I'm doing for myself or friends/family. Still, even though it takes a lot of space and that can be aggravating in this too-small house, I'm glad I bought fabric when I was working and could afford it.

My wife and I have a nice stash (HUGE) but, we still collect family's of fabric, or fabric for our "next project". We are very frugile about our purchases and NEVER buy unless its on sale or with a coupon. I am as much a couponaholic as I am a fabricaholic. Honestly it's astounding how much we have saved in a year using coupons.

Ouch how are you doing with your therapy? I had this surgery 2 yrs ago.. couldn't afford therapy as long as they wanted me to have... still have a little trouble getting that arm all the way up but no pain!!!

I had the same reaction when I converted DD's room to my new sewing room several years ago. It was like going on an archeological dig ... ! LOL
After 20+ yrs of quilting, I just had TOO much in my stash and some UFO's I didn't even remember ! I reorganized and donated a bunch of fabric to the guild for comfort quilts, and books & patterns for the auction. Also gave some to 2 friends who've recently started quilting.
I've been on a fabric DIET since ... determined to use more of what I have !!

I surely have more then enough. I save scraps for my quilting customers, when they bring a quilt a bag or two or carload of fabric goes home with them. I save selvedges for folks on here and this week I am sending at least one or two 30 gal bags to a group in Missoula Mt who does charity quilts of all kinds. I only buy something if I really really love it, once in awhile a new piece of beautiful fabric is fun. I buy fabric to finish quilts, but I have to know that quilt is going on the quilting machine right away. When I feel like my minor fabric shopping has not met my needs of new, I go bring a container in from the garage.

Fabric is so fun to buy, I can get carried away in the fabric store so easily. All the pretty colors get me going until I am giddy!!

I have only been quilting for about 6 months, and really hope that I can avoid just stashing. I like to have a few projects in my head to be gathering fabric for, but much more than that is a little stressful for me. It might be inevitable that I will eventually have more than I can possibly use, but for now enough is definitely enough.

A couple of years ago, I cleaned out my studio so that my grandson could tile the floor. Like you, I was amazed by the sheer quantity of stuff I had accumulated over the years. Secondary hobbies are painting, scrapbooking, hand dyeing fabric so supplies for all this stuff had really mounted up. Then I inherited another quilter's entire stash and now the hoard is bigger than ever. I donate fabric, donate quilts, donate books, etc. but I'm a long way from seeing space on a shelf. Like you, I'll probably never buy another piece of fabric that isn't essential for some specific purpose (backing, usually).
