i did a crazy 9 patch sorta that way..

i first made the block. then cut the batting the same size. the backing need to be 2 inches bigger than the block.

i stitched in the ditch after i sandwiched each block..making sure the top was centered. did all the blocks, then joined them together..i did a few like this..

Someday I'm going to learn this method

mhansen6 06-27-2011 11:44 AM

http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-115627-1.htm

Try this. It shows two different ways of doing it.

skippitydodahquilts 06-27-2011 11:44 AM

I did a Christmas stocking this way. It's in storage, otherwise I'd grab it and take a picture, but I would suggest starting on a small project with the QAYG method. It's time consuming, but a lot of fun. Check with your LQS to see if classes are offered for 'Cotton Theory' - the other term for Quilt as you go.

Kehoeta 06-27-2011 11:46 AM

I tried to do the QAYG - I now have the quilt all connected - but the piece the has to be folded over to create the sashing has been giving me absolute fits. Broken needles and now birds nests.... I'm putting it away until I gather some more patience

there are so many different names for it, each method a little different.

Here's another tutorial similar to kimberly's by K3N with some interesting adjustments to the way the sashings are attached.
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-36303-1.htm

Both are very good tutorials, with a ton of pictures and detailed instructions.

The method watterside is showing is different from the methods shown in Kimberly's tutorial.
It's the same (or similar) to the QAYG method shown in the tutorial by DebWatkins:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-52698-1.htm
Also well written, but the final product has a different look.

Check them all out, pick and choose steps from each if it works for you. It's a great technique to know.

thank you craft bear will be looking for your message

I actually created a tutorial for this but not sure how to post this here. If you send me your email address thru PM, I'll send you a copy.

There are several videos on Youtube. Get on youtube and search "Quilt as you go".

I love QAYG. I have made several quilts with this method.
This quilt is a Quilt of Valor quilt I did with QAYG

I'm trying to attach the tutorial for those who want to download it but it doesn't seem to work or I don't know what I'm doing. I'll keep sending out to PM until this can get posted.

This is also called lap quilting. Georgia Bonesteel has a book on lap quilting or you can google "how to lap quilt" and get some good instructions. I've started a quilt top using this method and I like it. We live full time in an RV so space is limited for a frame of any size. I tried it on scraps until the got the hang of attaching the squares. It's not difficult!

I'm working on a QAYG now. The hardest part for me is the final "sew it together". It seems so hard to hold things together and sew neatly by hand.

watterstide 06-28-2011 04:04 AM
what watterside is showing is different from the methods shown in Kimberly's tutorial.[/quote}

it is the "fun and done" method/pattern. my LQS has lots of different patterns. it calls for the "batting buddy" template, but you really just need to go 2" larger on the back.

watterstide 06-28-2011 04:13 AM

zepher, use the double sticky quilters tape or elmers school glue.

http://www.createforless.com/Dritz+D...utm_medium=cse

it is also called "wonder tape" joanns sells it..

Rettie V. Grama 06-28-2011 04:15 AM

I quilt as I go, but I just do it my own way. I've read many instructions, all of which I find too complicated.

sniktasemaj 06-28-2011 04:31 AM

Ditter on the board did a tutorial. Do a search. It is good tutorial of a different way.

Also Sewing with Nancy has a video on her site with "Cotton Theory Quilting" which is yet another way.

Krystyna 06-28-2011 05:38 AM

I love doing quilt as you go because I can use my embroidery machine for quilt patterns on each block. So much fun!

exactly the way you said it, and show it on the picture tutorial i did.

quiltingme 06-28-2011 06:46 AM

Wow! You gals did a GREAT job on those QAYG quilts! I have only done table runners that were a type of QAYG - The first ones (done at class) turned out great, but then later on when I did some on my own, they were not as nice. Guess I sorta lost the technique.

https://sites.google.com/site/vicki2g/tutorials]https://sites.google.com/site/vicki2g/tutorials

there's a download for it. you need Word to open it. Hope it works ok. if not, let me know.

Enjoy !!

there is a good tute in this forum too that adds strips to each block, front and back, if you prefer that method.

watterstide 06-28-2011 10:19 AM

Chuckle, Chuckle, Craftybear, you are always willing to help all of us. Thank you.

quilter64779 06-28-2011 02:02 PM

Do a search for the disappearing 4 patch. It makes an 8" block then you cut your batting and backing just alittle larger then do what ever quilting on the 4 patch.

barbarajean 06-28-2011 06:35 PM

I've done quilt as you go using the log cabin pattern. Use same methods that are discribed in the tutorials. I stitched by hand, but one could machine stitch. Cut the backing an inch larger than the finished block for seam allowance when joining the blocks on the back.

incoming2me 06-28-2011 06:56 PM

I learned the method taught in the book Crazy Shortcut Quilts.

Although I don't make crazy quilts, I use their QAYG method.
I've taught this method to the ladies in my quilting group with great success!

kwiltnutt 06-28-2011 07:16 PM

If you can find any of Sharon Pederson's books in the library, she does QAYG......"Reversible Quilts"

chergram 06-29-2011 06:51 AM

thanks for all the good information will do a search for block pattern

marthahelen 07-01-2011 07:53 PM

Your quilt is really great!
