Quilt As You Go
 

I was hoping to get opinions on how you like Quilt As You Go if you have tried it before. I am pretty new to quilting and one of my biggest challenges is always how to get a huge, heavy quilt into my little machine and then wrestle with it to make sure my lines stay straight, so quilt as you go is very tempting to me.

I'm planning on trying the version where you machine stitch the front seams together and then hand stitch the back (without sashing). I've never hand stitched before but I have cross stitched for years so I hope it is somewhat similar :) I thought about using the version where you quilt the top and batting and then add the backing last so you don't have to hand stitch at all, but that still requires you to stitch in the ditch so the back is held in place, and that defeats my purpose of avoiding wrestling my quilt in the machine.

I would appreciate any advice or experiences you've had with quilt as you go! Thanks!

I have used two methods - one is Fun and Done and if you google it, there is a you tube video. I liked it. No hand sewing.

Since I'm an oldie but goodie (LOL), I actually learned Quilt As You Go using Kaye Wood's techniques, specifically a really old book called "Turn Me Over... I'm Reversible". I checked Amazon and there are used copies of the book still available... I had no idea it was such a classic!

In this YouTube video, she's showing how to do the technique with a serger, but you can do the same with a sewing machine.

It's a great method for making quilts quickly or doing charity quilts.

I have used Fun and Done method, no hand stitching. Came out lovely. Give it a try.

book called Machine stitching or quilting in Sections is a good one. or Reversible quilts by Sharon Pederson. quilt as you go can be in blocks, rows or sections.

I have not done QAYG, but I did use Marti Michell's book Machine Quilting in Sections to quilt several large quilts on my DSM. I highly recommend the book. I prefer quilting in sections to QAYG.

There are several different methods for QAYG. Some use sashing, some don't. Some are hand finished and some are all machine. In addition to the methods listed above is Georgia Bonesteel's.

I've made over 350 quilts doing qayg method. all hand quilted. I just did FMQ on my friends LAM for the first time last week. it was fun
