Quilted to Death
This weekend was all about quilting for me. I am almost finished with my dogwood quilt (and I need to finish it and get pictures on here!) and I started my dragon fly quilt. I love this quilt. It looks like stained glass and has lots of color. Well, I have been practicing my stippling all weekend, and started quilting all the different colors of the center of this appliquéd beauty... and now it lost a big part of it's beauty. It's "quilted to death" so to speak. It really muted the different fabrics.
It's too much to try to rip out now. Lesson learned. |
How about a picture - I'm sure the rest of us would love it.
Perhaps the when you finish the center of the quilt you could change from stipple pattern to a different pattern, feathers, vines and leaves, crosshatch, somethings that isn't so dense and then the whole effect wouldn't be "quilted to death."

Ok, here's some pics of it. I did use a marking pen, so you'll have to use your imagination to make it go away!!
I think once you remove the marks from the pen, you will love what you quilted. I would try that first before I ripped out all the stitiching. Personally, I think it is beautiful!
Beautiful applique. I think you needed invisible thread.
Beautiful applique. Try removing your marks.

I agree that it's the markings that's making it look "quilted to death", LOL. Love that phrase by the way, sometimes I feel quilted to death! LOL!
I honestly think it's gorgeous, though!!! I'm sure you'll love it too when the markings are gone. |
I think it is beautiful and once the marks are removed you will like it a lot more.
Wouldn't "Quilted to Death" make a great title for a mystery novel?:D It is still beautiful and I agree with not getting the quilting out. I've tried that before and even with washing and ironing I could still see some old needle marks. I use the clear vinyl and a dry erase marker to preview my quilting designs now. What I think will look great quilted on a top sometimes does not suit it after I preview it. It has saved me some quilting mistakes.
I think you are being too harsh on yourself. Step away from it a little, remove the markings and perhaps you can appreciate what you have done to it more.
I can see why you love the dragonfly applique, it's lovely. I agree with the quilters who say it will look better when the markings are removed. I think the overlaps in the quilting contribute to your unhappiness with the result; the cross-over loops of the granite or garnet stitch you used make the work flatter and less sculptural. A meander that doesn't cross itself may give you the look you wanted. I hope you DO like it with the marks removed...the stained glass look is so vibrant.
Agree with everyone. Wash that beautiful quilt to get rid of the marks and then put away for at least 24 hrs. I think you will love it again when you do!!

Sprayed the quilt a little and some of the markings disappeared. Here's what it looks like a little damp. The markings have changed to a "dye" effect (I kind of like it, too bad it goes when it's washed lol)

Oh, your quilt is beautiful and look how beautiful the quilting looks now!!! Great job!!!
It is so beautiful, your a to hard on yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
See what it looks like after you remove the marking. Bet your going to love it!
It looks great! Don't rip, just wash and love what you did :D
Your quilt is just beautiful. We are always more critical of our own work. Enjoy your creation!
This is a beautiful quilt and I think like others when you get the markings out it will look totally different and be very beautiful.
peace |
I think that what was a nice quilt before you removed the "pen markings " is now a gorgeous quilt after you removed them. I think you'll be pleased when you are finished and the entire quilt is washed. Be sure to post pictures of the final product. And if you find that you are unhappy, there are many of us waiting in the wings to take it off your hands. LOL

You're all very kind. I really like this quilt, even with the over-quilting. I found a picture of it that I had before I quilted, so you can see the "before"
I agree too much but still pretty. I personally think once machine quilting became popular quilts have lost a lot! Myho
I agree with the rest, remove the markings & it'll be just fine. You'll like it again.
I just love your quilt! Did you make up the pattern yourself? I agree that it will be fine in the end, although you have a lot of the white surroundiing the middle. Maybe you could do something else with it. It will be fine in the end.
I agree, I think once the markings are gone you might just see it in a different light. Pretty quilt though.
I agree about the markings making the quilt look quilted to death. Very pretty quilt - love the dragonflies.
I think once the marking pen goes away, it will be much better . Also another lesson is that different types of quilting are busier than others. I think a curlicue like you used is very busy, where a gentle wave might have worked better. But the quilt is very lovely, and I think once it's finished, you'll be pleased.

I think I'm ready to try to tackle some feathers, and might try that on the white that's surrounding to try to soften it up. |
love your quilt. great job
beautiful I would not take out the quilting. as you said lesson learned.
It is beautiful and a lot of work.
I love it....with the markings gone, so is the distraction...lovely!

That's not even remotely close to "quilted to death."

Beautiful quilt.......but I have to agree with you. Maybe after the marking is gone it won't be bad at all....like I said...beautiful quilt...and applique!
I think it is beautiful. It is probably the markings that make you displeased. I'm sure it will be just wonderful.
