Just saw the gorgeous Completed Dear Jane posted on another thread, so lovely.
I'm in the process, which has now dragged on for 3-1/2 years because of a life-interruption, of making my version of Linda Franz's blue and white "Love and Freindship" prize-winner. Mine is hand stitched in many scrappy blues and white background, not all one blue print with white background as she used. I'm using her original freezer-paper-with-pencil-marks method, not the new InkLingo printer method. Anyone else making it too? |
No...but it sounds wonderful. WOuld like to see it later when it is done. Love your "Inchie" avatar.

Played around with some setting options, haven't settled on one I like as yet.

Thanks, Y'all!
I have over 200 of them made, no 2 alike. Her freezer paper method is so easy, and matching points and setting in curves is foolproof. It does take more time than machine peicing in some ways, if the pieces are large. But the pieces for these diamonds (I call them "diamond dust!" lol) are so small that hand sewing them is faster than doing it by machine, and is waaay more accurate. I should be ashamed to have let this project get shuffled aside. And I am! |
Double Wow! Incredible work!

Wow, those are awesome and they look even harder than the Dear Jane blocks! Are they?

Here's what the pieces look like set out on my little mini lap-design-wall workspace --

No, I don't think harder, just perhaps a bit different. I think the DJ blocks might be intended for machine piecing, but someone might be able to set me straight on that. Most I've heard of have been machine pieced, but of course one can hand-stitch anything. And some of the blocks have applique of course. The QDs are generally traditional square quilt blocks which have been skewed into diamond shape, and can be any size at all. I like the 4"x7". The patterns can either be set up in EQ and printed out, or hand traced or run through copier from the books. I do know that some people have machine pieced them, but I wanted to do the quilt like Linda did hers, as I had not done hand piecing before. I guess her charming manner captured my fancy! I have changed my modus operandi since learning the QD method - anything tiny or curved, I do it by hand! |

All hand done?? wonderful job hon.

Yes, all hand stitched. I knew it would be a long term project, but I wanted to know that I had made one large project by hand before I shuffle off this mortal coil!
Still, I want to be farther along with it. Stitch! Stitch!! |
Very nice!! Its going to be beautiful when it done!!! OK, what's this about never doing needleturn again?  Come on yours turned out beautiful!!!

Wow those are amazing.

I'm basically a shamefully lazy person, so anything that takes patience is me being reeeally good. I have some quilting friends who make needle turn look like a walk in the park, but for me it is fairly hard, I'm not good at it. Particularly the inward turned curves. Larger, smoother curved designs are not so much trouble, but still, it's work.
I saw someone, maybe Eleanor Burns, do that thing where you sew right side down on some sheer interfacing or what-not, and then turn inside out; or sew right side down onto water soluble stabilizer (expensive! Did I also mention I like to go cheap?) and then turn right side out; either way, the hems are turned under for you and wahlah all done. A lady I know taught a bunch of us how to do authentic Hawaiian quilting, and all needle turn, she's fantastic, I'm not! I have an especial respect for work I know has been needleturned, I know how much work it is. |
Absolutely stunning what you girls and your tiny pieces do!! I am in awe! Maybe I'll try one block and see...........................

These are absolutely beautiful! But I love blue anyway and you have done a wonderful job of piecing. I don't think I would ever get something like that done. Good job.
