Quilted Jacket
 

Has anyone made a jacket out of sweatshirt? I have some sweatshirt of my dad who passed away recent Feb. I am thinking of making into a jacket and it be like getting hugs from dad. Something like that but I don t know where to start? Can anyone posted me some pictures of what you made or step in right direction. Thank you!

Check out Nancy's Notions. She has several patterns for turning sweatshirts onto jackets. I'm sure there are oddles of free patterns/directions for them on line.

sweatshirt jackets are really quite easy- i'd show you a picture of mine but i entered it in the fair saturday-so won't have it back till next weekend-
anyhow- you (de-construct) your sweatshirt (cut off ribbing, neck/cuffs/bottom) cut off sleeves on seams (and open them on inside seam so they are one piece each which will lay flat- cut the side seams so you have a large piece which is the back- mark & cut up the center of the front.
choose your fabrics- i used a variety of width strips from 1" up to 3" wide- sew your fabrics together to create your (strata) making pieces large enough to cover each piece of your sweatshirt pattern with a bit extra- baste & quilt each strata to each piece- then trim around the edges of your pattern- reconstruct along the seams you cut off- then bind the bottom edge, center front, neck & cuffs.

I have made several. pick a sweatshirt at least one if not two sizes larger than you normally wear. the color of the shirt will be the inside color of your new jacket, so pick a color you like! cut it apart and mark the left and right sleeves. cut up the middle of the front. i personally leave the ribbing but that is up to you. I cut my strips 2 inches wide and into 8-10-12 inch lenghs and then sew a few together. I only do a few at a time and lay them on the sweatshrit fabric and sew them down straight onto the fabric. I let them overlap at the top and bottom of each peice and trim up later. after you have sewn the fabric strips onto your sweatshirt pieces, then sew the sweatshirt back together. I add a quilt type binding onto the raw edges around the bottom, neckline, sleeves etc. Pockets can be added too with a stanblizer added. mine take me about a long afternoon to cut and sew

I like to use the right sidemofthe sweatshirt next to my body. Then it doesn't pill. There are so many ways to domthemoutside. Google swearshirt jackets and younshouldmget a lot of ideas.
