Quilter's Fabricalc?
Do any of you use the Quilter's Fabricalc? I purchased one
YEARS ago when Joann's had a 50% off sale PLUS they allowed for a coupon to be used (during the holidays). So I am wanting to know is how often do you use this calculator to figure out yardage and such? Reason I am asking is because I am at a crossroads on if I want to keep it and try to use it or do I want to get rid of it. |
Never had one -- will be interested to hear people's opinions.
Never bought one because I can figure it out on my own.
One reason I have never used it is because I have EQ7 so when
ever I decide to design a quilt it is usually with that and I can get all my measurements and yardage from that. |
I only ever use mine as a basic calculator. Never took the time to figure out all the other stuff it can do
I have not (been tempted a few times when I saw them on sale) but I have an app.
I have been tempted but I would want to try it before I bought one. I have EQ5 and the calculations are a little MORE than I actually need.
I have one but haven't used it. Apparently I'm not the only one :)
I bought the app for my iPad but never took the time to figure it out. I use EQ7 or the free app from Robert Kaufman. Much simpler.
I have one that I got for almost nothing from a store that was discontinuing it. I have never figured out how to use it. I use the Robert Kaufman app on my iPad constantly. It calculates everything I need and it was free,
I don't know if all of them has it, but mine came with a tutorial
dvd video. |
I actually have 2 of them. One for the house and one in the car for trips to stores. I use many of the functions. I like that it factors in seam allowances, extra yardage for backing that gets drawn up in quilting, how many strips and yardage for bindings, borders. Guess Im just lazy and not good at math, but I really like it. Comes with a DVD to show how to use all the functions. And I use it for just a regular calculator!
I have one, still in the package. It was a secret pal gift from guild a long time ago.
I didn't realize there was an official fabricalc app. I have the Robert Kaufman one.
I got one as a gift and use it as a regular calculator - once I opened it up it seemed like more trouble than it was worth. On the other hand I didn't pay for it and since it is larger than my other calculators I seem to be able to find it easier.

I have one my husband bought me, and I use it all the time. Does alot of great things, came with a book, and a compartment in the back holds a mini version of the book, You just have to learn to use it.
I found a free app for my Ipad that calculates binding length, backing size, quarter square triangles, etc. I use it every time I am ready to finish a quilt. It calculates everything I need.

I use mine quite a bit to figure out borders and such, find it very valuable. I would not toss it

I bought mine when it was on sale, had a coupon, and worked at JoAnn's so got the discount! Should have saved my money. No matter how many times I sit down and try to figure it out, I can't.
I have the app on my phone and use it if I'm out and about also have EQ7 that I use when I have my computer with me.
I have had mine for 4-5 years. Have no problem with it whatsoever. Just put in what you have to know and it works. Has for me! I have a lot of trouble "headwise" figuring out amounts of fab I need and this does the trick for me. You just have to have patience and work at it. It'll come to you in one felled swoop! Edie
I have always done the calculations myself it takes a few steps but I am usually accurate. I recently downloaded the Robert Kaufman app I double checked my calculations on my last couple of projects the numbers are incredibly close.
I use the app more when I'm out and don't have my calculations with me or when I get an idea and want to know how many cuts I can get out of a piece of fabric. |
I have one and don't use it much. I do use it to calculate backing fadrics, and how many binding strips to cut. I should use it more, but just don't.
I figure, I already have it and use it for a few things, why not just keep it. It doesn't take up much space. |
I bought one and it is not user friendly, never figured it out. If you want one pm me and I will let you have mine.
I don't see why I would ever want to calculate fabric anyway. If I have a pattern I buy more of each fabric then listed. If I don't have a pattern I make sure I have 3 or more yards per fabric to start with. I use what I need and the rest is for the scrap bin or stash.
The free app is available on Android too because I use it too!
I got one because I'm a sucker for a new quilt toy, but to be honest I have only used it as a calculator, not to figure out yardage etc. But, since it has quilt designs on it, I haven't lost it to the men in the family, do that's a good thing!
I got one as a gift from a friend. Wonderful of her to give it to me, but it's SO COMPLICATED and there are so many buttons on it I've never used it. It makes me feel like I'm taking a test in a math class {shiver}
I have the iPhone app, too, but my good friend here on the board will figure out how much yardage I need on her same app. I am calculator illiterate. I can't do math so the calculator isn't helpful. I one time was able to find out how many strips of fabric I needed for binding, all by myself. But my friend is so good to me that she always figures out what I need. Everyone needs a friend like mine. She's perfect!!

For those who have this calculator and don't/didn't get a tutorial
DVD video you can go to the company website to watch the 4 videos posted there. Fabricalc tutorial video |
I bought one and could not figure out how to make it work for my needs so promptly returned it. I bought EQ7 and I can do my quilt layout and get all my yardage needs calculated for me.
It is a wonderful little tool. I worked in fabric stores for many years and know how to figure all the different yardages, but the caucalulator is so fast and never makes an error. Just give it the correct information! It is not difficult, just watch the videos mentioned on a previous reply. You will love it.

Probably in the minority, but I never figure out what I need ahead of time. I just get a lot, so it's no wonder I end up with 10 yards of fabric to make a lap size quilt (and that doesn't include the backing because I like Fat Backs). What can I say. I fall in love with certain fabrics/certain colors and never want to be without.
Yesterday I was in a LQS and someone came in and got 6 inches of fabric. She said she screwed something up in her cutting. I've never bought only 6 inches of anything! |

I had one, but sold it after trying it once. i agree the Robert Kaufman app is easier.
I purchased this a couple of years ago and love it. Very handy to bring with you when shopping. Watch the video. I always practice once before going to the store to refresh my memory.
Looks like I'm a member of the club of those who have one and never used it. but I am going to try to video on it and see if I can learn to use it.
Thanks, Quilty-Louise, for the link! (post #32) |
