When quilting "Baptist" fans to get the best results I know they should be started on an edge. My question is do I need to worry about "ooching" of the backing, I pin about every 2 inches. I was taught to always start quilting from the center of the quilt.
Thanks for any and all help you can give me. D |
peaked my interest...what is a Baptist fan?

It is a quilting design that using a 1/4 arc and is repeated in the pattern an equal distance away. this video helps demonstrate it. |
I love that pattern - my grandmothers used that pattern alot in their quilts - I use groovy boards with my longarm to do the baptist fan - its works quick and looks so good when I am finished. I tried to draw them on but I always get it messed up - thats why I use the groovy boards now.

http://www.constantinequilts.com/ind...ewCat&catId=13 I have a baptist fan template similar to the one in the first link but haven't used it yet. i did mark one quilt and then decided to remove all those markings and do something else. hope to use it soon. are you planning to hand quilt or machine quilt?? |
Thanks so much for posting this. This is the pattern my Grandma used to handquilt all her quilts! I never heard it called by name. She was a strong woman and Southern Baptist 100% so this name fits just right. And now its bedtime, so off to bed under Grandma's quilt!

I have used this pattern several times on my hand quilting, and I started at the bottom and worked my way up, smoothing any extra fabric as I went. I also used perle cotton and did a big stitch as I was a beginner. I think it looks really nice on almost any quilt and does a good job holding the batting in place without a lot of fuss. (I do not enter competitions, I just quilt because I love it) My family and friends always like my quilts, so that is what matters. ;)
