Yes, I do. But once I begin again, I get interested and my passion renews.
I'm currently on a quest to back and quilt the several tops I've made, and won't let myself start anything new until I get these done. It makes me kind of grumpy --I like starting creating anew better--but I'm determined, and it's such a great feeling to have something REALLY finished. |
How about just one at a time, it will be easier to work on one and get it done than to think about all the projects you have left to finish. I think we all go thru different periods where we sew and then we don't. But my love of quilting always brings me back. There are times that I will sew every night and other times I won't sew for a week. Like I said, one project at a time. Good luck
I find I work best when I know what I'm doing with the quilt...gift, donation, etc. Otherwise I tend to get easily distracted.
we all have funks-I have done this with sewing garments, beading, READING-I am a bookcoholic-quilting. There are times I just go in and pet the fabrics and then leave. It WILL come back-maybe not in a month or six-but if you enjoyed it once you will enjoy it again. DO NOT STRESS!!! That just makes it worse. I always said when I retire I will walk the dogs, tend the garden, read all I want, do what I want in my own time frame. Guess what-there are still only 24 hours a day and even retired I don't have time to do it all. Relax-enjoy life-and don't sweat the stuff you can't change. Learn to accept yourself and let life happen and enjoy it.
I am in the same situation. We are getting ready to move and I just don't want to do anything-hopefully I will recover after we get where we are going!
I go between knitting, quilting, painting and doll making
too. I found a way to not get bugged down and it works for me. I made a rule for myself to do one project at a time and finish it. I usually pull out lots of fabrics for a project and put those all back when I am done. I make myself do it and now I am quite disciplined lol. If my studio is a mess, I can't concentrate. I will stray, when making a large quilt to some other block or small quilt that interests me but I go back and finish. While I was working on, "Shakespeare in the Park," I did a small cross quilt and a Burgoyne Surrounded block but then I just finished my SIP quilt. I also finished the cross quilt and now I am debating on the BS. |
I'm glad I read all these posts. To see other people have this problem. Just today I was thinking I was losing interest. But this has happened before and I always get back to loving it.
I am constantly cycling through hobbies, I get obsessed about something and then cool down on it...then eventually get back into whatever-it-was. The neat thing is that by the time I cycle back around to something, I've tried new things and learned new techniques that sometimes inspire something I would not otherwise have thought of if I hadn't allowed myself to wander down a different path for awhile.
I do sometimes feel a little guilty or annoyed with myself when I spend a lot of money on a hobby RIGHT before I burn out on it, but then when I come back around to that hobby later I dig out all this NEW stuff and feel like I found treasure! So I figure it all comes out even in the end and let myself follow my inspiration wherever it takes me. :) |
I think that we have time when our 'creative juices' are not flowing. Right now my juices are not flowing they are 'oozing'. Hope to get back to full steam soon.
Whew! I thought it was just me. Every possible reason listed, works for my lost majo. Thanks for the reminder to chill out and just relax and enjoy when and if the urge comes back.
I go through phases of enthusiasm and the blahs. It helps me to think in terms of baby steps. I try to envision a finished project and calculate how long it would take if I only do an hour a day, or even just 15 minutes. Once I see progress I usually get a little momentum. It's not something I do because I have to, but the UFO's represent a considerable investment in time and money, and that nags at me. Paradoxically, if I let myself get too disappointed in myself for not achieving what I set out to do, then it's easy to start spiraling downward and get nothing done for weeks.
I get burnt out trying to get back in the sewing room. ( does this make sence, lol) with going to work, then getting home, there is ALWAYS other stuff that has to be done. I guess we all go through some sorta something. Just hang in there

As a novice quilter having begun last fall, under the direction of my sister who has been quilting for 30 plus years, I keep in mind a bit of advice she gave me. She advised me to finish one project before you begin another if at all possible. She told me that if I have another project in mind, by finishing the one at hand I will keep my motivation to finish. It works for her. Although this is still new to me, it is so far working also. I am making 9 quilts this year for birthdays for my 9 grandchildren. I find myself always anxious to begin the next one. I hope you get your motivation back, but you may also just need a break. My sister is on a break now and enjoying it. What works for one does not always work for another.
I find I stick to it a lot easier when I have a little pressure, like I have to get this finished for the quilt show, I want to finish this for my granddaughter, I just want to get this out of the house soon, etc.
What helps me get the sandwiching done faster is: my quilt frame to hold things taut, Elmer's School Glue, Free Motion Quilting, and stitch in the ditch from the front for sewing that last binding stitching (the one most people hand sew to the back). I started this quilting business to get rid of a basket of fabric I had in my closet. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, etc. |
It's a relief to know that it isn't just me....I haven't finished anything except 2 very easy quilt as you go baby quilts that were gifts. I feel guilty when I see all that expensive fabric just sitting there. My excuse is that my work is getting to be really bad. I get home so late every day and then have dogs to walk, etc. I used to do some handwork while watching tv at night but now I just vegetate. I even stopped going to quilt club meetings, it's just too hard after working all day. I hope I come out of it.
Yes, it happens to me too. I am currently working on a needlepoint pillow of seashells. But in the mean time I have been working on a few quilts "in my mind". I have three quilts with the fabrics chosen and patterns but I have just not been in the mood to go into my studio and begin one of them. When the mood hits me I will choose. Meanwhile I am enjoying working on needlepoint for now.
I go between sewing, quilting and knitting usually. But at the moment it is gardening! I always get back to quilting within a month or so.

I go through this too. I find it often happens to me when I let the studio get piled up, disorganized, over-run, just plain messy. Then I don't want to straighten it up and just sort of close my eyes to it when I go by. And that's hard because the studio is my *living room*!
So, when I make myself put things away, shelve partially finished projects neatly, rearrange fabric, dust and vacuum, and clean my machine, I find that the desire to begin again is quite pleasant and strong. :) Jan in VA Luckily I enjoy other creative activities like crochet, calligraphy, drawing, painting and reading and can put off cleaning for a very long time. LOL I just close the sewing room door and find something else to do. I just started my veggie garden! Eventually the quilting bug finds me and I just HAVE to get back in there and find my cutting mat and tools under the piles of stuff and get started again. Just like Jan in VA said, a clean and organized sewing area is such a delight. |
Find a friend who is suffering from cancer and your mojo will return....they
need" the best kind of sleep from heaven above is under a quilt homemade with love..." |
The thought of so many UFOs would be overwhelming to me. I have three projects going and don't know where to start. I'm just going to do one (the smallest one) till it's done and that will get me inspired to do some more.
When I started quilting a few months ago, I told myself I will always finish what I start before I start something else. Boy, that didn't last long. LOL....I have 2 quilt tops waiting for me.....I lose interest and leave it alone for awhile and then I feel guilty and sit down at my beautiful machine and start sewing. I recently bought an Accuquilt Go and love it. I'm 70 years old and my carpel tunnel gives me problems if I have to use the the hand tools. Anyway, don't feel bad about losing your mojo. We all do. :)
I hear ya - I have to switch to different types of hobbies - digital scrapbooking, cross-stitching, woodworking. Thankfully I'm in a quilting mode now. :)
I think we all get our mojos lost in some sort of craft i usually do a little quilting then change to something else and come back i have a few unfinished projects going , you will get back to wanting to quilt
HUGS dora |
We can all understand the quilting funks. I have been in one during the beginning of the year. But, for me nothing beats the funk like some $$$ in my purse, and online sales or a visit to your lqs. Right now I am in a quilting marathon, one quilt being bound, one bom done (July), 1 quilt off to Charisma for longarming, one top done for a new charity that I hope to start, border just cut for this one, blocks waiting to be sashed for a dgd bd present, a couple of birthday quilt kits put together. It started in April when I decided to work from my stash, and I put together quilt kits (4-6 different fabrics in zip locks), piled them next to my chair, and went through my quilt books for ideas. I broke my fabric moratorium this week when I bought 2 panels to make similar quilts for my dd and dsil.
Fondle some fabric, take an hour to meditate on what makes you happy and in peace. namaste. |
I have been that way since my Mother died in August of 2012. I cleaned the studio up, Put everything on hold for a while, while I was fighting kidney stones during Thanksgiving to the new year., I started reading novels and to this day I have read 26 novels. I have begun to lose interest in reading now. So maybe soon I will be back again quilting.
Oh please don't let this happen to me. I have so much fabric, machines, etc. My husband would commit me if I wasted all that stuff. Sometimes you just need a break. I do a lot of outside work in flower and vegetable gardens, mowing grass, going to ball games for grandchildren and numerous other things and always want some sewing time. I'm sure it will pass.
I have lost my mojo too - have made a couple of quilts but it was a real effort to get them done. Hope you get over it soon!
This is me...I get overwhelmed when I have fabric all over the place or piles of scraps. I am in the slump again...I am going to try and get back into it this weekend and sew...rain all week and more this weekend. ; (

Sometimes it is as simple as cleaning up your stash. Go through your scraps and turn them into squares you can use--if big enough for strips 2.5 inches seems to be a really good size. Same with bigger stuff, use the layer cakes, etc. in size as a good jumping off place. I find when I play, I often get inspired. Finishing things--well, that's discipline. I find I finish things pretty well, around Christmas! They become gifts. I also try and get a head start by completing a few projects that I can give as gifts. I am afraid though that you have become bored with your projects. Many of us do, and they often become UFO's. Either decide that you are going to finish, maybe plan 1 a week or a month until you finish(or put them in your UFO stash thinking you may get around to it). Too bad we don't have little elves to come along and finish these projects!
Sometimes you just need to work on something simple, that won't tax your brain..When I feel like this I work on blocks for a string quilt, or sewing scrap blocks together,. Before I know it, I am bored with the simple work and ready for a new challenge!
I had burnout but the fever has returned. I know having friends to quilt with keeps me going sometimes. Just go with the flow. You probably just need some time away from it and the urge will come back.
When I don't feel like sewing/quilting I don't. I don't want to force it b/c it's something for fun, not to be forced. So I will move onto something else I like to do. I'm an avid cross stitcher forever so I always have projects on the go (I pulled out one last night from 2004!!!) and when I don't feel like doing that either I usually knit a scarf. I'm also the type of person that has a book in each room so I can just pick up where I left off.
So I don't stress when I don't finish something, there is usually a reason, and I'm not ready yet to finish it. Sometimes the best way to get back into it is to clean and organize, give the sewing machine a good clean out and oiling, tidy up the shelves, rearrange my quilting books and go through my fabrics and think about what looks good together. Usually by that point I have all my ducks in a row and can finish something. |
I'm right with you. I did one small quilt top and it was a really easy one. I think allergies are taking away my mojo. I do have to make a quilt in less than a month and a few other projects that have to be done some time soon. It's ok to take a break from it. We always go back when we feel like it.
When I started quilting, I made a promise to myself, to finish one quilt before I started another. So far it has worked for me.
That is where I am at. Had plans for projects this winter but did nothing except basting of 3 UFOs (still UFOs) until this past week. I have done some quilting every night. Remember how much it relaxed me & how fun it is. Cleaning & organizing my space helps me so much. Sorting out the UFOs & deciding which ones to start with & there is always that trip to the local quilt shop that helps. Buying something new for my space, a new candle or fabric motivates me!! Happy Quilting!

If there is a job that I am dreading, that's when I find anything else to do (even housework) rather than work on it. I was working on a quilt that I was not liking and that really put me in a funk. I finally put it aside for a bit, found a pattern that I've been wanting to make and went stash shopping. It was fun working on something that hasn't been sitting around for a couple of years for me to get to.
Me too! I haven't been in the mood for quilting/sewing since February. I have thought about it, a lot though (does that count?). I am hoping to get back in the mood soon as I have a quilt I want to finish.
I haven't necessarily lost my mojo for quilting, but I have for buying fabric. I can't believe it! I went to the local fabric store today, and didn't see a single thing that I wanted! Of course, I had to buy something... I ended up buying batting and needles. Huh! :)
