Quilting Aggi 10-01-2009 04:27 PM

Hi all!!!

I'm hoping you can help me out!

A good friend of mine started sewing with us in our Thursday night sewing group lately. She completed her first quilting project tonight. She made a beautiful crazy patch cushion.

She is now hooked on quilting and is anxious to get started. For now she has been using my little 1945 Singer Feather weight to sew on, but she plans to purchase a machine of her own in the next couple of weeks.

Now she is trying to figure out what she needs!!! Can you help me out with creating a wish list for her? She can get some basics and then the rest of the list she can give to her fiancee for some Christmas gift and stocking stuffer ideas.

Please help me create a list for her!

Cheers
Andrea

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 10-01-2009 04:28 PM

Does she have a cutting mat yet? If not make sure her wish list is for a bigger one than mine. It's only 17 x 14 and that can be a pain.

justwannaquilt 10-01-2009 05:42 PM

Mat (mine is 23x23 and cut a 44" piece folded in half), ruler (a long one at least 22 inches and a 12.5 inch square), rotary cutter(I love my 13 dollar 45mm fiskar), and fabric lots of fabric thats all I use when quilting, well other than my machine!!

trupeach 10-01-2009 05:45 PM

fabric and thread every color under the sun and fabric and pins and more fabric. Oh and did I say fabric hehehe

Marcia 10-01-2009 05:49 PM

sewnsewer2 10-01-2009 07:05 PM

trupeach 10-01-2009 07:11 PM

tslowery 10-01-2009 08:38 PM

Yep MORE FABRIC never have enough of that.
A nice cheap ( ) iron that gets good and hot
I like my mat that has a cutting mat on one side and a ironing surface on the other it is great to put by machine and easy to take along is you travel
MAIN ITEM for me anyway SEAM RIPPER

tlrnhi 10-01-2009 10:00 PM

I can't think of anything else to add....maybe more fabric?
I dunno.......

Esqmommy 10-01-2009 10:12 PM

some other items that are good to have include:

patterns
books
freezer paper
heat n bond light
assortment of threads, including some bottom line thread and monofiliment
if she can paper piece or wants to learn, she'll need an add-a-quarater ruler
scissors - small pair and a larger pair; snips
supply of chocolate to keep close by

just ideas for 'extras" that are great to have on hand!

patty48 10-02-2009 12:36 AM

How about a nice organizer tote to carry all of it?

minstrel 10-02-2009 03:23 AM

How about a subscription to McCall's Quick Quilts or some other magazine with easy beginner quilt patterns? A nice source of project ideas every month! :-D

Boston1954 10-02-2009 05:04 AM

Help her get organized early. Clear plastic boxes for storage. AND extra needles for that new machine.

MNQuilter 10-02-2009 05:07 AM

a 12and a half inch square ruler! Great for when the 6x24 is too bulky and for squaring up blocks!

sewjoyce 10-02-2009 06:06 AM

And, of course, she's going to need more fabric... :D

Quilting Aggi 10-03-2009 02:23 PM

Thanks for all the great ideas gang!!! I'm just now getting to read some messages here. It has been a wild, insane and crazy week at work and when I got home from work yesterday I CRASHED!!! I had to get up early this morning to teach my class again, so I intend to have a nice loonnnnng sleep in tomorrow morning!

I am going to make a list for her of all your great ideas along with ones I had told her about already.

geeez.. I never thought of more fabric ;) Great suggestion!! I also realize that yes CHOCOLATE is mandatory for sewing and quilting. ooh and red wine!!!!

My friend, Lesley, who I am making this list up for to give to her fiancee gave me a $25 gift certificate from Fabricville as a little thank you to get her back into the sewing/quilting world. I plan to put that certificate to good use.. hmmm what do you think... Fabric??? :)

Mousie 10-05-2009 08:24 AM

add to these things a picture in a frame of the boyfriend to keep in her sewing room. :D

sdparent 10-05-2009 08:51 AM

bobbins, snips, magnetic pin holder

Tabby1957 10-05-2009 09:03 AM

I like the flower pins and my magnetic pin holder....makes life so easy.

The best purchase I have made recently...don't know how I lived without it until now is........my 1/4" seam foot. OMG!!! love love love it.

Tabby1957 10-05-2009 09:04 AM

Oh....I forgot to mention.............FABRIC! More and more fabric.

My daughter is just starting into quilting and is overwhelmed at the possibilities, but also realizes she "has to start somewhere". She is intrigued with jelly rolls and likes the fact that they are already color coordinated . . . SO . . . for her birthday I got her two jelly rolls and ordered a book, "Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Charm Quilts" . . . in looking at it I think it will have a range of skill levels. Hope to narrow things down for her abit. Carol

I quilted hot pads with the Square in a Square for our Quilt Boutique and they sold well. Just make a sqaure for that pattern, make a back and sew together after having quilted the pattern.

Harmony 10-06-2009 06:52 AM

How about a gift card for an online store like Fat Quarter Quilters or the Fat Quarter Shop? I could blow about $500 there and never blink an eye!

Quilting Aggi 10-06-2009 07:58 AM

I will see Lesley on Thursday and I'm going to create a list of all your ideas. She will have a huge list!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks sooooooooooo much for all your FABULOUS ideas!

Rose Marie 10-06-2009 08:38 AM

Find out what feet come with her sewing machine. Some do not come with a walking foot or a 1/4 inch foot.
A mat that turns is a must for a beginner.
A years subscription to QNNTV to learn all the different ways the experts cut and sew. Thats how I learned to quilt.
A selection of fat quarters would be nice.
Quilt in a Day flying geese ruler and the triangle square up ruler are my mainstays.

nuttyhurricane 10-06-2009 02:32 PM

How about a long folding table or desk to put her machine and cutting mat on? I am sure the hubby to be would like to sit at the table to eat at least one meal a week.

A "lazy-susan" style 12" cutting board. Olfa makes the one I have. For cutting squares and smaller pieces. I'd hate to be without it. Also I use my pinking shears for cutting the edges of ravelly fabric before washing it. Works like a charm. Otherwise I always love to get and give fat quarters as gifts. A very good fat quarter book is nice to have. I believe M'liss Rae Hawley has one out in the shops, can't recall the title. And for paper piecing, Carol Doak's "Show Me How To Paper Piece", it's excellent. 8)

She told me she has plenty of table/desk area. She is taking over a large portion of their basement/rec room.

Gee! Why not go all out? It is Christmas, afterall. I say go for the APQS Millenium long arm. Then add all the rulers, threads and accessories too! (Hartley Fence, Extended Base, Micro Drive handles, Quiltazoid, etc.). Maybe even add IntelliQuilter. Oh, and don't forget.....more fabric!

COOL!!! 8)

Janis 10-07-2009 09:18 PM

A small telescoping magnet from Auto Zone. They have them on the front counter by the cash register in my Auto Zone, and are a lot cheaper than the ones at Joann's. They are good for picking up scissors, pins, seam ripper, etc when you drop the item on the floor.

I think you might be right. When it was close to time for our wedding, we purchased a mobile home and when hubby to be saw "my boxes" coming in...lol...he got a real funny look on his face that I still remember.
No, I think she would like to keep the fiancee along with the sewing/quilting paraphenalia...

marty_mo 10-09-2009 04:41 AM

In addition to a the little goodies, he could never go wrong with a gift card then she can make her own selections.

ninas3kids 10-09-2009 05:17 AM

Quilting Aggi 10-09-2009 09:26 AM

I can't even afford my own, yet! Give me a couple more years and I'll have mine, though. I'll let you come by and use it.
