I just realized that I put my blocks together wrong. Should I take them apart and correct them or finish them the way they are. I have 12 done (wrong) and 8 to go. It's the Take Five pattern.

Butterflyblue 08-08-2010 05:05 PM

Depends on how bad they look TO YOU. If you can live with it, just keep going the way you have been. You can call it a "design decision". After all, lots of new quilt blocks were invented by rearranging the elements of older ones.

If it bothers you, change it.

mawmawbeve_60 08-08-2010 05:11 PM

Yes, I had to rip out like 8 ,,,but glad i did..U can, or if you like it that way..leave it!

LAQUITA 08-08-2010 05:11 PM

It's like this: A WEED is only a plant YOU don't like.

So if YOU like the 'new' design then keep at it. If not then change it. It'a all up to you. :)

hcarpanini 08-08-2010 05:13 PM

Depending on your fabric, you may leave them be. If the fabric is busy and you dont see a pattern, leave it alone. If you want the "stair steps" to show, you may have to rearrange them. Show us a photo for a better idea. I have done many of these and quilted even more!

KathyAire 08-08-2010 05:25 PM

If you put blocks together wrong, the 'Take Five' pattern is the best one to do it with. Those blocks are kind of scattered anyway, in my opinion. If it looks good, leave it.

That is what I was thinking. I have made 3 or 4 Take Fives and I think anyway you put them together would be fine.

Janie Q 08-08-2010 05:48 PM

I've made a couple of take five quilts and you can put them together any way you like. A mistake is just another way of doing something.

craftybear 08-08-2010 06:10 PM

post a picture for us, please

mamaw 08-08-2010 06:59 PM

I would rip them out, because I wouldn't be happy knowing they are wrong.

Prism99 08-08-2010 07:16 PM

I'd go with the flow and use them the way they are. It becomes an original pattern!

theoldgraymare 08-08-2010 07:23 PM

as far along as you are, just call it your original variation of the design.

trif 08-08-2010 09:00 PM

I say there are no quilt police, do what makes you happy and you are the only one who knows it was a mistake and not intentional, or was it?! Hmmmmm..........

bearisgray 08-08-2010 09:20 PM

As others have said - a photo would be helpful -

If it looks "right" to you - regardless of what the pattern suggested - leave it

If it looks "wrong" to you - it's easier to fix/change it now, than later. If it looks "wrong" now - it probably won't look "right" ten years from now.

knlsmith 08-09-2010 01:05 AM

Is that a siren I hear? Is it the police?
Nope. They went on by.

I agree, go with the flo nd call it YOUR pattern. Make another one the pattern way. :D

katier825 08-09-2010 01:08 AM

If you don't mind how it looks leave it. You can always do the rest to match the first set.

farmer623 08-09-2010 03:36 AM

I just spent hours last night ripping out four blocks I had put in upside down. I let the quilt sit for several days while I thought about it and decided I wouldn't be happy with it if I let it stay like that. I wonder why I am so obsessed with something that causes me so much frustration! Sometimes I think I am too stupid to quilt.

mimiknoxtaylor 08-09-2010 04:04 AM

Just finished a Take Five also. Like someone else mentioned there are so many ways to put them together I don't think it will matter & it's your quilt so be creative & make it truly your creation!

quiltmom04 08-09-2010 05:27 AM

Leave them. Take Five is so random that it won't matter. If you are following the directions, their layout is just ONE you can use. You can make up your own and it will be fine!

nannyquilts, who says it is wrong? Is it really wrong or just different from what you saw in a book? Do you like it? If so just leave it and go on, if you think it has to be like the pattern then take it out and start over, but if you did 12 the "wrong" way you must have liked the way it looked or you would have noticed on the 2nd or 3rd one.

I couldn't agree more. If you make the same mistake throughout it becomes a pattern.

libertykm 08-09-2010 08:26 AM

Just name it your mystery quilt. That's what mine are when I goof. If it is small mistake in my quilt I challenge them to find it.

MillieH 08-09-2010 08:28 AM

No doubt many new quilt patterns have come about from someone putting an existing pattern together differently.

nativetexan 08-09-2010 08:31 AM

it's a "happy accident" as painter Bob Ross used to say

Jeannie V 08-09-2010 08:33 AM

One time I pieced the center of the quilt all wrong. I cried and then decided to bite the bullet and take the center out and redo it. I am so glad I did. It turned out to be the most beautiful quilt that I have made.

I agree.... and how about just finishing the 8 wrong too!

klgreene 08-09-2010 11:48 AM

It depends on you. If you think it will bother you, rip it out. The center block on my avatar was in a different place, and after I had it all together, I hated it, so ripped it out....learn to love your seam ripper. I love my ripper, I love my ripper, I love my ripper. I loved it a lot yesterday...... :)

nannyquilts 08-09-2010 12:57 PM

I decided to rip them out it just didn't look right, Thanks for all your ideas and help. I've been quilting for a while consider myself still a beginner and like feedback from other quilters.

julybaby8 08-09-2010 04:21 PM

What does the Take Five pattern look like?

nannyquilts 08-09-2010 04:46 PM

This is the first Take Five I made. I wanted something different so I used Asian fabrics. I had alot of fun making it.

Quilting Grandma 08-09-2010 07:44 PM

I did the same thing, but I reversed two of the colors in one of the blocks (I was using batiks). I was not too happy with myself, however, I took the blocks, added sashing and loved the look. My granddaughter got it for graduation and loves it.

Mornigstar 08-10-2010 07:51 AM

I wanted to ask about that pattern "take five" as I have 5 I could use and that # doesn't seem too busy a look.
But, I got excited since you live in Cape Coral and I winter
in Bonita Springs. K. Morningstar

quiltingfan 08-10-2010 07:56 AM

Nobody will ever know. Had the same thing happen to me recently and I can't even tell now. Keep it the way it is.

fancifrock 08-10-2010 01:11 PM

Do you like them the way they are now? If so I would just continue to do them "wrong". If it bothers you, by all means start ripping!!!!!!!!!

newbee3 08-10-2010 01:30 PM

you would probably be happier if you took them apart and redone them

mimiknoxtaylor 08-11-2010 04:09 AM

The book is "Take 5" and I think the author is Kathy Brown. It has several fun & quick quilts.

Mornigstar 08-11-2010 04:44 AM

Thank You Mimiknoxtaylor- because at this age I have too much fabric to do intricate detail quilts. I need to find simpler quick quilts that will mostly be for charity and not heirloom. Actually, I even like the looks of some of the larger pieced quilts.

mlaceruby 08-11-2010 04:51 AM

these patterns care from the teachers pet
she has several that are quick and fun to do

julybaby8 08-14-2010 10:51 AM

Your quilt looks lovely. The pattern doesn't looks too difficult.
It's something that I would like to try :) :-)

JACRN 08-24-2010 09:10 PM
