I suggest you consider trying a small project first, such as a mini quilt.

I've done it. It does take time. I don't have a pic since it was a charity quilt but some of the pieces were larger than my 5x7 hoop. I found by using my 5x12 hoop and flipping the design I could do the whole piece. Of course, it would probably depend on the design you were using also.

Yes, I have designer diamond I purchased a magnetic hoop this keeps you from have to un-hoop each time the magnetic just pick it up rearrange to the next section and replace the inner hoop and touch start.

Since I don't have an embroidery machine, I have not tried to quilt on one. But, I do have a question about machines for quilting. My BFF in TX has the top-of-the-line Brother embroidery machine (I can't recall which one because she has Brother embroidery machines) and the retail cost of her machine was around $12k. She also has a (used) Gammill that she paid about $11k for. So - my question is - would purchasing (some) LA quilting machines be just about the same price as purchasing an embroidery machine to use for quilting?

A year or so ago Georgia Bonesteel had a quilting show on PBS, and in one segment she demonstrated how she quilted a quilt on her embroidery machine, and the quilting was very nice, she did it one block at a time; while cooking dinner apparently, set her machine up, fixed dinner, then came back to a finished block, sounds terrific to me, however, I don't have an embroidery machine.

I have quilted with my embroidery machine. I use the same thread in the bobbin. Bring bobbin thread to the top when you start, leave tails and bury end with needle into batting. I love the snap hoop (magnetic hoop) for placement, holds it nicely and no hoop marks/burn.

Hi, I have been using my Pfaff 2170 for machine embroidery quilting for several years, not many designs out then, but now there are great designs. Just used a simple star design from Embroidery Library for a lap size quilt for the 90th birthday of a war veteran. It had an aged look center panel of red, white, and blue with small stars, did not want to just stitch the stripes, so did the stars in a random mode. The back was a dark blue, with white stars here and there. So called it "Stars in the Night". The borders were just straight line stitching. Can't do FMQ and prefer not an all over design, so machine embroidery works for me. Just remember no stabilizer needed. Try it you'll like it!

Sometimes I use the embroidery when I am doing something small although this quilt was a bit bigger. I fit in the designs in a few blocks and then just stipple or do straight lines on the rest. Hope this picture comes on.
