Middle school sewing class: According to the teacher. Material is what you start with, your basic form of any construction, a dress, skirt or blouse. In this case a quilt. I will need various forms of material, fabric, batting, and thread. I use the term fabric.

My husband calls it material too. Drives me nuts!
Jim sometimes calls my Fiskars a pizza cutter. I let him, because honestly, I have done that too, in jest.
I remember in the pilot episode of NCIS that a reference is made to "crocheting" one of the rules on a pillow. Every time I watch that episode I get ready to shout "embroider" at the tv though sometimes I shout "cross stitch" to give some variety.

A friend made a very intricate little quilt as a commemoration of a wedding--names, dates, etc.--and got a note back--Thanks for the potholder!
I cringe when I show or give a quilt and someone says "Oh you made this? How quaint"

Mine is when someone says material instead of fabric. I don't correct them but I say ugh to myself.

I have heard it called both, but I use fabric because it is shorter and more specific. Material is more general, the first definition is "the matter from which a thing is or can be made.".
Now how about the difference between material and materiel? |

Does anyone call it “cloth”?
Heard this from a guy standing in front of a rack of magazines at the airport: "Why all these magazines about quilts? Nobody makes them anymore!" Oh, my!
Grew up with an extremely talented seamstress mother who always used "material" for our "outfits". Never " fabric" for our "garments". Guess I'm nostalgic too. I also smile at "sewist" but prefer that to "sewer" because it could be confused with a plumbing term!

I am befuddled when people say "Muslim" for muslin and "taunt" for taut. My first quilting teacher did this. She was wonderful and I learned a lot from her. But she used those words!!
I was watching a very famous quilter on Youtube the other day and she said "Never use can-ed air" when cleaning your machine. I thought I heard her wrong but she said it twice! I never heard anyone say that!!!
A funny little quirk I see is most of the writing on quilting assume the reader is female

My history (in Western Canada) is the same as KenmoreGal2's. Three years of Home Ec and you cut your "material" to make your dress. Was there a geographical difference in terminology that has now spread and taken over with computer usage? Is "material" now considered a bad word?
I think the word fabric just evolved. When I learned how to sew they called it material.
I just found this thread, and I gotta say...
WOW! there sure seems to be a LOT of quilt police, er...quirks in our little quilting/blanket/material world. *giggle* :) |

My mom always called it material and I did too when I was learning to sew. But that was 30 years ago and we also called the couch a ‘davenport.’

It's a minor cringe really but my inner spell checker wants to scream when someone puts "boarders" on their quilt. I always picture the guy you rent a room to climbing onto your quilt center. Now if you want to create a "border" for your quilt to separate it from other segments or the edge I'm fine with that.
