I foster kittens for a local animal shelter. I shared your story and it made everyone go Ahhhhhhw. I love the idea of the miners finding them. We have this image of miners as these big tough guys (and they are) and it is nice to see their squishy side.

I have a cat that once ate all of the thread off a bobbin and had to have major surgery..was cut open in 6 places to remove all the thread. Now when I leave the sewing room I either unthread the machine or cover it.
