I have a Pfaff Grandquilter and it has about 10-12 inches of space. I have mine on a frame. The machine is only around $1200-$1400. The frame is about $2000. I really like my setup and have done several quilts up to queen size.
Are you looking for a machine and frame setup or just a machine with more throat space. The Pfaff machine is only a straight stitch machine so if this is to be your only machine I would say this is probably not the machine you are looking for.

brother PQ1500S and juki T98Q I think are about 5-600 babylock jane not sure of the price though

Here in the Northeast part of the US ...the Babylock Jane runs around $850 usd, the Brother 1500 around $700 and the Juki TL98Q (now discontinued but the Juki 2000 or 2010 has replaced it) runs around $850-900 usd. I have been doing research for the last 6 months so I am informed of the prices. I bought a used Brother 1500 for $425 which includes shipping across the country. Having other Babylock/Brother machines I like the quality of them. I have heard almost nothing but good about Juki too. There is also the Pfaff Mega or Pfaff Grand quilting machines they run around the $850 usd but I have heard problems about tension with them. The Janome I have heard has given some people problems. Who knows? The same goes for so many items some people swear by them and others don't care for them.

Have you checked out the Singer7469Q. It's a fine machine and price around $300 - $400.

without bells and wistles Juki is a great option too.


Also look at some vintage machines. They have very high unobstructed openings. Singer 201 is a little longer opening too.

be careful with some of the machines being suggested because they aren't really designed for frame quilting.

the harp area should be a squared off as possible otherwise you will lose even further throat space due to the curve off the head in the throat space.

also pay attention to the height of the harp area because this is the section where the finished quilt rolls up into and the shorter the harp the less space you will have and large quilts will have to be turned half way thru the quilting process.

you want a machine that is a high speed straight stitch only for frame quilting.

Since you didn't specify frame quilting (for which a straight stitch only machine might be best), let me recommend that you consider the Baby Lock Quest Plus (I have it and LOVE it) or Serenade, or the similar Pfaff Smarter C1100 Pro, Elna 7300 or Janome 6600. All well under $2000, even as low as $1000. If you do plan to use a frame, the Juki straight stitch 2010 has been as low as $600 and then you could use another machine for sewing and piecing. Janome 6500. I did an "oversized" queen on mine & it wasn't even a struggle getting it thru.

We're looking at this machine as well but we've not seen it for less than about $900 shipped. Please - where did you find it for such a great price!

I have a Babyloc Jane $850.00 NEW and a Juki TL98QE $699.00 NEW and I like them both, Juki is heavier and heavier feet. Sewa as much and as long as I want too. I only do FMQ and straight stitching, don't need any other stitches.

I got a more expensive machine but the financing was for about 2 or 3 years with no interest. So I put my money in a separate savings account and then had automatic payments til I could pay it off.

Got the Pfaff Creative Vision. Other than my FW it will be the last machine I plan on buying.

I love my Juki on a frame. Works great for me.

I have a Viking Sapphire that I bought new for $1100 but it is not for use on a frame. It has lots of great features and should be alot cheaper used. It has a 10 inch throat.
I also have the Baby Lock Jane set up on a long arm table.
The table is an Imperial and with the Jane it cost $1500 at my local shop brand new. Jane is a strait stitch and is the same machine as the Brother 1500. I added a stitch regulator to it for another $500. With tax and delivery and set up it cost me $2300.
I can only do a 4 inch design per row because of the 9 inch throat.

Love my Janome 6600P. Want a Janome Horizon when they get all the bugs worked out.

I don't know how you feel about buying an expensive item on Ebay, but there is a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 auction that ends in about 4 hours for $1399. I love this machine and paid just under $2000 for it last year. Has a 10 inch throat and all of the bells and whistles you can imagine, including the IDT (built in walking foot. My dealer is having a special on this machine I think for $1799, and the QE 3.0 is $1299 w/10 inch throat but less bells & whistles.

BabyLok Quilter's Pro - stright stitch only, about $1000 from local dealer, does REALLY fast straight stitch and amazing FMQ. Comes with all kinds of feet including walking foot although I dont even bother with it since the FMQ is so good.

actually, not knowing if your looking for one for a frame, i would say to not get the 6600..,(if your planning on getting it on a frame.)
it is to heavy for lifting on and off a frame. and has to many bells and whistles to waste on a frame.

i would get a Juki..nothing fancy,and great on a frame! ( i had one on a gracie pro frame.)

The Janome 1600 is also a good machine for quilting. i think they can be bought for around $800.00

Both have 9" throats.

I just bought a Janome Horizon for $1900.

Juki TL98Q. I got mine from ebay at a good price.Only does straight stitch.

I have a Janome 1600p on my Grace Pinnacle Frame and I really like it. I did remove the feed dogs and put them away for safe keeping, but that's the only thing I modified. I'm happy with this very fast straight stitch only machine and I hear it's also good for piecing if you don't keep in on the frame.

I have a Juki TL98E, about 9 yrs old, and works wonders!!!

Babylock Jane works on a frame. 9" throat, 1500 spm, and straight stitch. @ 1300, but you may find a classroom model at a dealer. And, it sews jeans like gliding over butter!

The shop where I bought my Jane told me that Baby Lock dosnt make machines. They put their name on other company machines.
Jane is a Brother 1500.

I got a Janome 1600 online (new) for $499 and free shipping. I thought it was a mistake in pricing but it was correct! I don't think the prices are that low now.

:thumbup: Well let start by telling you I just got a new Singer 9960. It has a 10" throat. I don't know about anyone else. To me this is a real sweet machine. I don't know if it is still on sale . It was $1099.99 but singer had their 160 th year. They sold it to me for$448.00. Sewing Machines Plus.com. No taxs no shipping. I have had nothing but good luke with it.

I am like you. I thought it was a mistake but it wasn't. It also is new not a used machine. I just guess GOD thought it was time I had a good machine. My past machines were only what I could afford at the time. Boy did have to replace them often. Happy now!!!!! :thumbup:

If you can find the Viking Mega quilter it is under 1000 and works great; with a 9" throat
