Quilting Magazine Subscriptions
I was wondering if there were any quilting magazines out there worth the subscription. I'm a newbie to quilting (not to sewing though) and am looking for sources of inspiration.
Anyone have a magazine that you just absolutely love? |
the new one called Block from Missouri Star Quilt Co seems to be a big hit. when i was a newbie, i found Fons and Porter quite informative
I stopped my all my subscriptions a few years ago. So many free patterns on the manufactures web sites and other web sites. Too many times I was less than thrilled with an issue. Now if I find an issue of a particular magazine that has something , I buy just that magazine issue.

Block is the quilting magazine I would get, as a new quilter, if I could get only one. McCall's Quick Quilts, Quilty, and Easy Quilts were magazines I liked as a new quilter.
My favorite is still Quilters Newletter!!! I have subscribed for about 20 years and it just keeps getting better!!!

I like Mcalls.
I like Quiltmaker and American Patchwork & Quilting.
I get American Patchwork and Quilting and McCalls. I like both of them. They have good instructions with their patterns and also lessons on various quilting topics. Also enjoy the links to their websites for videos and tutorials. I think a new quilter can learn a lot from both of them. I like the internet patterns, etc., but really enjoy reading and re-reading the magazines. Plus I must admit, I can't seem to get rid of them! I've tried Fons and Porter several times but they are just not my favorite. Also am getting Block and I love Jenny Doan but still doesn't have the lessons and details of the other ones. Good luck on your search.
I love Quilter's Newsletter and American Quilter's Society both; also get Machine Quilting for all the great longarm quilting stuff they have.
Quick Quilts and Block are my favorites.
if you are computer savvy you can find it all for free! I fell like many of the magazines repeat a pattern with new colors. It is also very easy to find used magazines at the library or garage sales.
I really like Fons & Porter and McCalls.
The first issue of Block magazine is available on the website as a regular item (with shipping charged for it). Here's a link:
http://www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/...4-vol1-issue-1 Have there been only two issues so far? Or three? |
I subscribe to Block and buy others off the rack when I see one I like. I go to Barnes and Nobles once every month to look through all the quilt magazines. I buy different ones each time. Some may not have the quilt patterns that appeal to me every month. I suggest you read quilt blogs. There is wealth of info on quilt blogs. Patterns, tool demos, tutorials, reviews, how tos, and new fabric lines. The blogs are much better then a magazine because they are updated about everyday.
I really like American Quilter.
I like Primitive Quilts magazine.
Quilter's Newsletter for me. Been subscribing for about 15 years now and I agree, it gets better and better each year.
I've never heard of Quilter's Newsletter. Going to have to check that out. Thanks for the tip!
I like Modern Quilts but they only publish 4 times a year.
1.. Quick Quilts
2. Block by Missouri Start quilts co. 3. Lot's of great websites on the internet to partake of patterns. |
I like Quilter's Newletter, Quiltmaker and The Quilter. I downloaded the first issue of Block but probably won't order the second. Seemed like mostly a print version of MSQC video tutorials to me.
I love American Patchwork and Quilting & McCalls learn a lot there good instructions and patterns. Quilter's World (Quilt World? Sorry not at my fingertips just now) is a very good choice for a newer quilter as is Quilty. Love Q's Newsletter and AQS Magazine for all the virtual quilt shows I can experience and articles about everything quilting. I get F & P but not sure I will renew-seems different, less than it used to be somehow. Love reading Quilt Sampler for all the shops featured, love to see where other quilters go to shop!
I like digital subscriptions. Currently I'm getting McCall's Quilting , Quilter's World and Quiltmaker. I also buy specific digital issues of quilting magazines I've seen in stores. Trying to get away from "paper". I'm waiting for the second issue of BLOCK to be available as a digital issue. Also buy books from Martingale is digital format.
I like quilters newsletter, they have the best articles. I also like american quilter. Most other mags just have patterns and I just buy if I like them
I only subscribe to Block now. It is wonderful! I used to get McCalls Quick Quilts, Easy Quilts, and Fons & Porter Love of Quilting. I agree that there are so many free patterns out there now that it isn't necessary to buy a lot of magazines. I can't part with a magazine once I buy it, so they just piled up and took up space that I could use for fabric. They are expensive too. Check out MSQC and look at all their quilting videos on Youtube. They are free and easy.
I have purchased Block. I'm not sure why because I really don't have room to store them, but I couldn't resist getting it. Now that I have it I'm really glad. I love having written instructions at my finger tips and their projects are just right for me.
Somehow I got a subscription to Keepsake catalog. Don't remember ordering it. All of the quilts in the catalog are kits. You can also buy just the pattern. I would rather sign up on someone's website but still I'm a tightwad, cheapskate, etcetera. There are just so many patterns that are free. If you go to YouTube you can watch instructional videos. Missouri Quilt Star Company has videos and as someone else pointed out they do have a magazine "BLOCK". I would check cyberspace first. I get enough magazines because of my career w/o ordering scripts.

I always liked Quiltmaker. I have a ton of back issues, but haven't bought it recently. They definitely focus more on beginner patterns.
I also see that our local library has a Zinio subscription. I can get American Patchwork and Quilting and Quilting Art for free via digital delivery, and love them both (as free subscriptions). I suggest you go to the local library and look at magazines and decide for yourself which has more helpful information. Another good source is yard sales. People get rid of their old magazines all the time and you can pick them up for a song....I'm so glad I never succumbed to the temptation to do that. I have fun looking at all my old mags from time to time, while imagining them with new fabric. It's even fun to look at old advertising and think of how times are so different now. I guess the bottom line for me is I can't think of a magazine worth subscribing to at the moment, but I'm sure glad I used to subscribe to them! I guess I believe that every quilter needs a cache of magazines, so you'd better start collecting yours! Ha! |
It all depends on where your interests lie. I like magazines that focus more heavily on techniques than patterns so I get Quilting Arts and American Quilter by subscription and buy most issues of Quilters Newsletter off the rack.
If you, as a beginning quilter, want more patterns and projects, browse through a good bookstore magazine rack and find the ones that suit your taste and skill level. It's a very individual choice, so look at them all before you decide! :) |
I buy a quilting magazine once in a while if there is something that interests me because I get too many food magazines as it is and, apparently, have a hard time throwing them away....
Thank you for posting the question knitwitrosie, love the name :) as I was wanting another magazine subscription.
I have just placed an order for the Missouri star quilt block magazine as it looks reasonable, being bi-monthly and I love the idea of a magazine WITHOUT adverts! |

Dropped all my magazine subscriptions a couple of years ago because they are so full of ads and also so expensive. I did recently subscribe to Block and will continue that one. There are many, many free patterns on the internet and you can print or save only the ones you like. Also the tutorials on U-tube are amazing for quilting, especially the ones from Missouri Star Quilt co. and they are free also. I also avoid all the quilting sites which push memberships, don't see the advantage.
Hi Jess! I started out just like you - a sewing background, but had never made a quilt. If you are interested, just send me a private message and I will send you some older quilting magazines for free.
Quilts and More is a great one - easy but trendy quilts and small projects. Also American Patchwork and Quilting is a favorite - always classy classic quilts. :) There are tons out there but if you're just getting into quilts these are great places to start.
When I was a new quilter, I received Quick Quilts. Since then, I've tried several that are quite good but, if I find I'm not making anything I see, I let the subscription lapse. At present I don't take any magazines because they tend to take up space where I can put fabric! Plus I can find almost any pattern I want online for free. If you are just learning, try to find a guild that does some teaching or some workshops that will help you with those things that make your work both easy and help with perfection in what you are trying to do. Not that it ever can be perfect but we should be trying to keep points on stars, make seams meet, pressing--that sort of thing--that a new quilter should learn.
I have a full bookcase of quilting magazines as well as books and I can't remember the last time I took one out. There are so many free quilt patterns on the net and most manufacturers have freebies. Don't forget your local library. Ours here have most Australian quilt magazines.
Welcome to the Quilting Board and to quilting. You'll find you can get an answer to almost anything here and that there is no such thing as a stupid question on QB |
