what kind of Quilting magazines do you all get? what are your favorites? what would you suggest for a beginner quilter?
I'd suggest a basic how to book. You can find them used or from Amazon....or any bookstore. Why not borrow a couple from your library? A lot of ppl like Fons & Porters beginner book
You can ask any question on here & find a lot of help. I like a book with clear pictures that "show" exactly what is meant. I think Quilt mag shows projects for beginners. Good luck. PS...here's another thread that might help. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-58838-1.htm

Quick Quilts is my favorite for simple designs that are beautiful and losts of info for new quilter (and even experienced ones that tend to forget!) I've actually been cutting back on my magazines because I found that there are so few new ideas, I keep looking thru my old ones for inspiration and loook on-line for ideas and free patterns. In spite of cutting back, I still get the QQ subscription!
Instead of spending money on subscriptions right away, check out magazines at the library to see what helps you (for free) or buy used magazines to look thru. My caution when buying old magazines - purchase the ones from the past few years which have the newer techniques. Really old ones have great patterns, but the techniques used are old also...no strip quilting tips in really old magzines...no tips on use of rotary cutters, etc. |

I don't subscribe to any although there was a "sign a friend up for free" subscription offered on here a few weeks ago and I was the lucky 'first pm-er' and got it.
Mostly I watch garage sales, thrift stores, small town libraries, and estate sales for them. |
When I started quilting I bought a baby quilt book at JAs. Fast projects. Great instructions. Even had speed piecing tech.

I have stopped all my magazines but Quilters World. I do like that one, such a variety of things in it.
I get lots but really enjoy the Quick quilts mag. Lots of fun ideas.
My favorite magazine is Quilters World 1 because you can have a digital copy and 2 the quilts are beautiful and they have instructions that you can follow even for a beginer.
I would suggest the digital magazine quiltersworld no hassle and you get 2 years of back issues with you subscription .

I let all of my subscriptions run out because there was too much overlap between the mags AND too much advertisement.
My favorite is The Quilter Magazine.
I buy a quilt magazine every now and then - the suggestion to find a quilt book/books at your library is a good idea. Our library pools their books with several other towns around the area - have a lot more books to play with
I really like Better Homes and Gardens American Patchwork and Quilting. It's got great articles and different color options for their quilt patterns. This is the only one I have time for and I find it is enough. Good luck.
I've subscribed to many different magazines over the years...the only two I've kept up subscriptions on are Quiltmaker and For the Love of Quilting. Since I've seen so many others say Quilter's World, I may have to try that again!
I really like Better Homes& Garden quilting magazine, plus they have an email newsletter available that is awesome. I also like Quilt plus Fons & Porter. I've gotten my older sister into quilting (in another state) & she has given me a lot of positive feedback about BetterHomes&Garden being the best magazine for her as a new quilter. Hope that helps! Hang in there; it gets better & better the more you do!............:):)
I've subscribed to Quilters Newsletter for hmmmmm - almost 15 years! Love every issue.
I disagree with everyone! I still find it useful to sit with a nice glass of wine or cup of tea and relax with a pile of magazines. I dream about what I might make and it's usually an adaptation of something I've seen in several magazines all together. I love American Patchwork and Quilting for the variety of skill levels it covers. I also like Quiltmaker for its very clear patterns. This is a journey, and everyone learns differently. You might just get a few every few months until you settle on one or two you rely on. Some magazines don't appear on our newsstands locally so I find I have to subscribe.
Your local library should carry at least one quilting magazine with the older magazines available to check out.
Go to your local library before getting a subscription. Mine carries two different magazines and I love being able to check them out and look to my hearts content without paying a penny.
Like Donna, I prefer Quiltmaker and Love of Quilting also. Most times, a quilt 'I've just got to make' has been from Quiltmaker. Fons and Porters' Love of Quilting is so much better this time around since they're doing it themselves, that I began subscribing again.
I cancelled all my substriptions.
I Agree!

I'd say it really depends on what you like. Some magazines are really geared more towards very traditional patterns and others are more Art Quilts. Look at the different ones or if wrapped in plastic and you can't, buy just one. Then decide if you want a subscription.
I would try to avoid the urge to subscribe to any magazine before checking out some past issues. I would check the library. One library near here keeps a basket of giveaway magazines, and they have a used book sale once a month. At least one local quilt show offers used mags for sale...Cheap! Ask at your LQS, too!
I also let all of my subscriptions expire as I got tired of paying for all of that advertisement I use to like Fons and Porter but they even started putting a clothes catalog right in the center that could not be taken out without taking the magazine apart I agree use the library I also belong to a quilt guild a good group that we borrow and exchange from also lots of sites with free patterns try Quilterscache.com enjoy quilting
can't seem to give up subscriptions to any of them...stacked up in closet LOL...
I love just about any quilt magazines and therefore, I can't seem to throw any of my old ones away. I have an entire bookcase shelf of just quilting magazines, so I have decided to never subscribe to another quilting magazine. (yeah, right!) Well for now anyway.....
With so many patterns and ideas on the Internet, seems silly to pay $20 or so for 6 more issues of magazine. That could buy several yards of fabric! My favorite is Better Homes and Gardens quilting magazine. Love it! Now, I will have to take a browse through my 5 - 20 year old issues of some magazines. This board here has so much more help and hints than a magazine ever could! |
There are so many free to download patterns from fabric manufacturers, other blogs, etc. Why not surf the internet for 'free patterns' and on YouTube for tutorials. I wish they have all these 40 years ago when I first started quilting, I learned quilting from my husband's grandmother, making what was then known as bedcovers.
I love them all, but I look for them used. Check at thrift stores, garage sales, and the classifieds here!
I subscribe to Quick Quilts, McCalls Quilting and Quilt Magazine. I'm still relatively new to quilting and I like to oooohh and aaaaahh over the pretty colors in the magazines. LOL.
I have canceled all but one of my cross stitch magazines though, too much clutter in my house. |

For a beginning quilter I think Quick Quilts, The Quilter and Quilters World would probably be a place to start. You might check your local library. Ours carry's several subscriptions to quilting magazines.
I get Quiltmaker, American Quilter and Quilting Arts |

But I have kept many of my past mags in those black magazine holders from Walmart's. I weeded out the older ones and kept the 2000 and forward ones. I go back over them and use the patterns and re-enjoy the articles because at my age one forgets everything that didn't happen yesterday. That'll do me for the rest of my life I'm thinking. 8-) |
I get a lot of them, but my absolute favorite is Quilter's World. You can get a digital subscription online or the print version. It is stuffed with great patterns.
Hi JoAnn,
I would check out guilds as well as library for mags. I still consider myself a beginner and take classes for demos and guidance. Videos are good too. I started with a turning twenty and a friendship star for 4th of July. Also a sampler class is good and I went with a Quilt mag that absolutely love- Quilting Arts. which is for art quilters. Fons and Porter was one of my first mags. I go with the passionate interest as it is inspiration. Hope this helps Christmas is coming! Sandi |
The only one I subscribe to , or ever have, is The Quilt Life. That's b/c it's more than just patterns and the same old instructions for binding, etc. However, when I feel the need for some patterns, I go to Borders or Barnes & Noble, grab 3-4 mags and get a cup of coffee and look through them - me time. If there's one I really like, I get it. I also thumb through them at JoAnns and Wal-Mart.
