WOW, what a handy list! I will definitely use this for my upcoming guild retreat next Feb.

The only thing I would add is a small desktop fan. I always have one handy for when I flash into my own tropical paradise. :D

Great list and thanks for sharing!!

craftybear 10-11-2011 04:33 AM

great idea, I will add a desk top fan to the list, thank you

That is a great list you provided. I'm surprised at the large amount of items as I will be attending my first retreat in a few months. Hopefully I'll have enough space in my car for me and my friend and all our "stuff."

trust me, if you prep your projects you really do not need all of this stuff...fine tune the list to fit YOUR needs and your retreat area!

have fun!

qbquilts 10-11-2011 04:46 AM

I would add colored pencils and graph paper for sketching out new ideas. Also nice to have are freezer paper (for applique and/or signature/label blocks) and wax paper & a towel (for cleaning applique gunk off the iron).

craftybear 10-11-2011 04:47 AM

yes this is just a list to help all of us and you can pack accordingly to each of you and your retreat areas

Also - if you're going with a friend, you can share some of the supplies - like painter's tape, sizing/starch, ironing station (since most places do not have the power/space for individual ironing stations), rotary mats & rulers (again, not all places have room for large individual cutting stations and usually have a few designated cutting stations scattered throughout the area).

I just thought of another one - SURGE PROTECTOR! At the camps/retreats I've been to, these are a necessity to be able to plug all your stuff in (machine, lamp, possibly iron, etc.) Usually not enough plugs are available for every item at every station.

Never mind - I just saw it in the grouped list, but it's not listed in the alphabetical section.

Glassquilt 10-11-2011 05:01 AM

Good to have a check off list. Don't want to forget basics.
Went to a family reunion where a cousin forgot her underwear. We teased her no end. :)

One thing that I would add is to bring yourself some calling cards to easily exchange contact info. No doubt, you wil make some long lasting friends. So either you can design/print out some business card sized cards from your computer yourself, or go to an inexpensive print house to have some printed (for less than $10.00). Have a look at mine that I ordered from Vistaprint.ca I take them with me. I got 250 for about $12 incl. shipping. I keep them as part of my sewing kit and in my purse and I love using them. They're so easy.

What a great list!! and yes, I've left the power cord behind before... sigh... one little distraction while putting the machine in the case... sigh...

And to Gail... another great idea!!

loves_2_quilt 10-11-2011 05:56 AM

Wish I had a retreat to pack for, oh well maybe some day.

KimmieH 10-11-2011 06:42 AM

thanks for sharing.....im going to my first retreat soon and was wondering about this!
perfect timeing

hearthhush 10-11-2011 02:29 PM

I always forget to bring my cell phone charger, even on just a basic trip anywhere. Please add this.

borntoquilt 10-11-2011 08:11 PM

WOW! what a packing list..... Think I'll have the RETREAT at MY house! lol !!!!

BethD 10-12-2011 03:33 AM

So funny this subject came up. I am going on a quilt retreat this weekend on Cape Cod and one thing we have found handy is a set of 4 bed risers to put under the folding table we use as our cutting table. Just that extra height makes it much easier for cutting.

stitchengramie 10-12-2011 03:37 AM

Thanks for the list. How long is a retreat?

stitchengramie 10-12-2011 03:40 AM

Your medications if you take any.

klc 10-12-2011 03:41 AM

Thanks! Great list and very helpful. Now I just need a retreat to go to.

stitchengramie 10-12-2011 03:44 AM

A notebook and pencil for writing down names, addresses, and email address, of new friends that you may meet at the retreat.

franc36 10-12-2011 04:13 AM

Thanks for getting together the outstanding list. It will be extremely helpful.

Anna O 10-12-2011 04:13 AM

WOW, thanks. You saved me the trouble.

Grambi 10-12-2011 04:38 AM

When I attended my first retreat I took enough projects for two weeks of sewing! I have since learned to trim it down to a more realistic number. I think it helps to have everyting cut out before going as there are usually many people sharing a few large cutting areas. And sharing some of the supplies with a friend is a good idea so each of you has less to pack. Thanks for putting this list together.

Scissor Queen 10-12-2011 04:49 AM

I've been to lots and lots of retreats and I'd leave about half of that stuff at home. You most definitely don't need perfume, nail polish or nail polish remover. Unless of course you're using a retreat as a way to step out on your husband like one person did at a retreat. You can probably leave the toilet paper at home. They generally have that everywhere nowadays.

Chances are high you won't use an iron or ironing board that you bring either. Most spaces limit the number of irons that can be plugged in and the people putting on the retreat generally supply irons, ironing boards and large cutting mats. It's best to ask the retreat hostess if you should bring these things.

It works out really well to have each project ready to sew before you get there. Pack the supplies for each project with the project and you'll cut down on the amount of stuff you have to lug.

GemState 10-12-2011 05:01 AM

You forgot the kitchen sink!!!! HA HA HA!!!

Doreen 10-12-2011 05:02 AM

Great list. It's better to have these things with you. You can only do so much prepping at home.

Overlander 10-12-2011 05:23 AM

Thank you so much for posting this. I am going on my first retreat this weekend (I'm so excited can hardly sleep) and the list will come in very handy. We were given a list, but this one is much more comprehensive. I'll share it with a few of the ladies in our group that are going together and take it with me for others going to future retreats. This board rocks!!!

Yes Craftybear thank you for this list. Every year there are 30 women go on a retreat to Charm Ohio. (there is a waiting list every year.) This is in Amish county and has loads of quilt shops. I would add a list of local shops and direction to them. Also any local color that might be of interest. Lyman's is a old fashion store we always go to, it has wood cooking stoves and the like, it is loads of fun!

I divide my days up. Thursday is for shopping and resting from the trip. Friday a little shopping sewing a bit and dinner out locally. Saturday sew , sew, sew and more sewing. Sunday is for sewing and packing to go back home.
Also I take board games, cards or hand sewing for night time things to do. I set at the machine to long I need a break.

MarthaT 10-12-2011 05:33 AM

Reading that list made me tired just thinking about basically moving my sewing room to another location. Guess I'll just do my own private sewing retreat right here in my own home. LOL! Now to figure out how to pull that off....hummm......

I've never been to one. Do you really get that much sewing done?

brushandthimble 10-12-2011 06:12 AM

Yes, if you are prepared. I got alot finished/completed on my last girls weekend. there are only 4 of us and yes we bring almost everything but the kitchen sink. LOL

Lori J 10-12-2011 06:39 AM

I just sent this list to all the ladies who are going on our retreat next week. Thanks.

Lucky for us, many things will be provided: iron, cutting mat, ott lights, ironing stations, surge protectors

Happy Linda 10-12-2011 06:49 AM

Think I need a second room:) Thanks. Always good to have a check list.

Rosie the "Ripper" 10-12-2011 07:58 AM

Another VALUABLE item ---

Those little sticky address labels you get in the mail.

They are a great time saver for all the drawings and contact cards you end up filling out.

smcfadden 10-12-2011 10:39 AM

Thanks for consolidating the list, craftybear!

mzmama 10-12-2011 11:19 AM

OMG....I need a bigger suitcase.

QuiltingHaven 10-12-2011 12:32 PM

Well CraftyBear, I shared the list with my DH and he now thinks my sewing room is perfect and I really don't have to go to a retreat because it would take me 3 weeks to get ready to go and 3 weeks to get everything back where it belongs when I get back home. In fact, he has offered to buy my any thing for quilting that I would like to have as long as I don't pack up and go to a retreat.....sigh.
