Look at Janome and Ellna. They have basic machines with wider carriages and they have a similar system to Pfaff for feeding fabric so you don't need to add a walking foot. I have a Viking Mega Quilter and love it to quilt on but found having to use the added walking foot (on for sewing; off for quilting) a real pain. Wish I had looked around more at what Janome offered.

Thank you for responding but $3500 is too pricey for me, as I was hoping for something under $500.

The throat space is the distance between the needle and the body of the machine on the right side.

If you are looking for a machine with a large throat space, you could look at a Husqvarna or a Baby Lock or Bernina which all have anywhere from 8 to 12 inch throat openings depending on the machine and how much you are willing to spend.

I just want to thank anyone that has responded to my request on sewing machines for quilting. All are good advice.
