Quilting vs. Piecing thread

What is the difference between thread made for machine quilting and thread made for machine piecing? I ran out of piecing thread so I've been using the quilting instead. Hope it's ok!

Machine quilting thread can be used on your machine and used for piecing but...hand quilting thread should never be run thru your machine as there is a finish on it to prevent it from knotting up as you hand quilt.

I use Connecting Threads thread for both machine piecing and machine quilting. I have a Voyager 17 and have no problems using CT's thread for both

I use the same thread for machine piecing and machine quilting. I made the mistake of trying to use handquilting thread in the machine ONCE. It doesn't work at all, causes all kinds of problems.

No difference unless you are using the thicker machine quilting threads, some come in different weights, you can use the piecing weight to quilt as well but if you use the thicker ones to piece it might make your blocks off by taking up to much space in the seam. I wouldn't use anything under a 50wt to piece, but you can use them to quilt.

Whereas you can use heavier weight quilting thread for different "looks" you don't want to use heavier thread for piecing as it adds bulk to seams. For example, I piece with 50 wt. and quilt with 50-30 wt. depending on what I want. Yes you can use both 50 wt. to piece and quilt.

I use Maxi-Lock serger thread for both! Love it and it lasts forever!

Why NOT to use serger thread. And I never would...lots of sites out there that tell you not to if you google. And this is just one. http://www.the-sewing-partner.com/serger-thread.html

i use the same threads for piecing and quilting. i never use embroidery, serger, or hand-quilting thread, though.

Ditto for the most part. I do sometimes also use machine quilting thread. Do not use hand quilting thread in your machine, it can gum it up
