I'm going to keep my eyes open for thrift shop wool garments--I'd love to try this.

Just came home from the Volunteers of America with 14 new 100% wool garments for $18.49!! I'm going to felt all of them first and then cut them up.

Do I need to use color catchers with wool?

I can't wait to start cutting and sewing.

Thanks for all your advice.

Have fun! Let us know how it goes, please.

I would not worry about 'color catchers' ...but I have tried in the past to wash/dry first then de-construct- I found I had much better results when I took the garments apart first- remove linings, cut away seams, remove any zippers, buttons, clasps- when I tried it with the garment intact the linings and seams really crumpled, pulled, skewed- kind of made it much more difficult to deal with after the fact. now, when I come home with wool garments I just grab my favorite scissors, a 'trash bag', a container to catch buttons, what evers; and cut everything apart- I start with removing buttons, zippers- then turn garment inside out- and cut off all the seams- then remove the linings & toss them (unless its a material I think I may have use for later) I wind up with some pretty large pieces to work with- these I toss into the wash...when they are all done they are ready to use immediately from the dryer.

I just remembered some coating pieces I have that are a 50% wool/50% polyester blend (I've had them put away for years!). Could these be used in quilts? I'm assuming that with that much poly, they wouldn't felt.

you can use any fabric you want in a quilt- look at crazy quilts that contain silks, satins, cottons, velvets....
the only thing I really keep in mind when mixing textiles is ...'will they play well together'? as in---does everything I used launder ok together? are they similar in weight? (although that is not always a consideration) I've made lots of quilts using wool on flannel backgrounds; wools, silks, corduroys, flannels, denim and regular cottons in the same quilt--
you are right the 'blend' will not {felt} you may have edges that fray- zigzagging them will help with that if it is a problems- but then it might not be a problem.

Sounds good--I think I'll give it a try in a few weeks--so much to do just now! For some reason, I am craving a wool quilt! :)
