I make what I like and I don't think about them matching. I have a couple that go with my living room but I put anything out there especially if it is a new quilt I made. I love my quilts so show them at different times and seasonal. Just do what you feel and don't listen to others. We all have our own personalities and likes.

Berta48 01-14-2011 07:54 PM

Forget it sweetie I totally agree with Merry!
Get rid of the SIL. LOL

New knee 01-14-2011 07:58 PM

A quilt is like a Persian rug, any one will go with whatever decor you have. Display your quilts!!!!!

ljorange 01-14-2011 07:59 PM

I just surround myself with things that make me feel good. To heck with coordination.

morforles 01-14-2011 08:03 PM

Isn't it "funny" how folks just don't understand if you are a bit unique? I quilt with mostly African fabrics and it's really fun watching people's faces when they view my quilts.....my daughter-in-law told me I would "outgrow" my love of bright, bold fabrics! You keep quilting with all the fabrics YOU love and have fun!

Hang paranoid! have you ever heard the phrase, "You can never be too rich or thin."? Well, as a quilter I believe you can never have too many colors. While I tend to often favor "muddier" tones, I also adore the brightest batiks I can get my hands on, plus sunny yellows, and anything else that makes me happy. Life is too short to worry what other people think of our private domains (homes). Let them worry about their own homes, and you do whatever you want to do in yours - as long as it is legal...

Damsel in DisDress 01-14-2011 08:28 PM

Who cares! There is always a place for a beautiful work of art!

Annz 01-14-2011 08:38 PM

Anything colorful adds to a room. Add a candle (even if you never lite it) with one of the colors of the runner and like majic you have something that matches.

bjdemir 01-14-2011 08:50 PM

Gee, I like to make things for Christmas, Halloween, fall, spring, summer, 4th of July, etc, etc. Not all goes with my color scheme. Good thing the quilt police don't come to my house!!

Gramie bj 01-14-2011 09:07 PM

YOU live in your home you must feel comfortable happy, and safe there any one else is just visiting if they object rember the door they came in also goes out. My friends come to see me not my home decor.

kwiltkrazy 01-14-2011 09:13 PM

I'm ecclectic, if I like it it goes.

HisPatchwork 01-14-2011 09:22 PM

I say go for it and put it anywhere you want. Make yourself happy!

Dotsie 01-14-2011 09:47 PM

Perhaps she would like it for herself. Otherwise keep it, a thing of beauty is a joy for ever.

Cuddly Quilter 01-14-2011 10:09 PM

We have a purple, green, brown, cream, gold, purple, blue and a mixed colour walls (daughters had fun in the back room as each wall is a different colour - they are arty) rooms in my house. So there is colour everywhere and i love it. Know hubby is not keen (he is an accountant and wears a white shirt at every opportunity he can - i have eventually got a light blue thrown into there and this last Christmas bought him a STRIPED shirt, yes striped, and said it was from my mom as she was visiting - he does wear it still - very good trained man i have here  ) but with all girls in the house and them being arty, he has know choice :P . I LOVE MY HOUSE - i am a colour person but do favour purple more!

So answer - WHO CARES AS LONG AS YOU ARE HAPPY and you should be allowed to show off what you make, as you are PROUD OF THEM AND SO YOU SHOULD BE

Quiltaddict 01-14-2011 11:21 PM

My only rule is that if I like it, it goes with my decor.

bels 01-14-2011 11:29 PM

Do your own thing....whatever looks good to YOU! It's your home, enjoy the quilts that YOU like.....in whatever colors YOU like. Enjoy!

The Big 4-0-? Honey, just wait until you hit the big 7-0!! All of that matchy matchy stuff won't mean a hill of beans to you. Go ahead and put out what you like.

MerryQuilter 01-15-2011 03:47 AM

Do whatever you want!

cjaye44 01-15-2011 05:07 AM

I make what appeals to me at the time and hang it wherever there is a place for it at the time. I just like looking at them. I rotate them often and enjoy them all over again. It's my house and my quilts!

judi wess 01-15-2011 05:08 AM

Your SIL just doesn't the TRUE quilter in you, bless her heart. If your house were all matchey matchey, it would 1; look like a furniture store or 2 look like a funeral home. I call such "wild cards" eye candy. LOL

OK, I've attached the 'block in question' (first picture). It really isn't bright at all, in my opinion. It is 1/4 of the full paper-pieced block. I'm thinking of putting it smack dab in the middle of my kitchen island, and having the new 'kitchen color' to be blue & purple.

She also turned up her nose a bit at my daughter's quilt-in-process. Yeah, now THAT'S bright! ha ha I let her pick the colors herself. She's 10 and tickled with it. I was working on this one last night, and my eyes are going crossed with the layout. The pattern is Eleanor Burn's Lover's Knot. And, get this, her room is painted bright orange! The name of the paint color she picked was Laughing Orange.

Do ya like my home-made design board? It's two hooks over top my set of closet doors in my sewing room. I used a shower curtain rod and made a quick sleeve in some flannel. Works great, and yes, it's a lovely BRIGHT teal.

Baloonatic 01-15-2011 07:43 AM

Nope, no rules! Tell your sis to MYOB!

Baloonatic 01-15-2011 07:43 AM

Oooo, the blue and purple are MY colors!! Beautiful! Can you post a pic when you get more of it done please?

Rock Lady 01-15-2011 08:17 AM

You're the quilt maker. You do it as you please. She does not need to say anything unless she is asked. You go girl and do as you please.

Gabrielle's Mimi 01-15-2011 08:21 AM

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your daughter's quilt. It's gorgeous!!!! Clever idea on the design wall! I use a flannel-backed tablecloth that I can roll up with the blocks inside and move to my sewing room.
BTW, I was reading in a design magazine several months ago that purple is the new "in" color for kitchens! You are cutting edge!

You GO Girl! (at least yours is in another room, I had to use a rod across the entryway by the front door! Oh well, makes a cute little curtain as I'm arranging blocks :) ) I say "peashaw" on her comments ~ It only matters what YOU like... and I like the purple/blue/black. (I'm thinking she's a little jealous of your talent and its coming off as 'tude / snub). What does she know? Nadda!

Crabby Patty 01-15-2011 08:52 AM

Are you happy with your house? Yes? Then don't worry about what others think. You're the one that lives there, not them. Chances are there are things about their homes that you don't particularly care about either. tit for tat. I'm with you.

Absolutely! Right now I'm working on my daughter's quilt during the day, and the table topper at night in front of the TV. Can't wait to see how it turns out, and when it's done I'll post a pic here. :)

I'm thrilled to hear the purple kitchens are now "in". Ha! This thread has me wanting to change ALL the colors in my house.

Tweety2911 01-15-2011 11:46 AM

A quilt is to love, the colors don't have to match anyting in your home. I don't have too many laying around (since family members want them all) but the ones I have don't really match but they do keep our legs warm when we are reading or watching TV and we love them so.

bammy1 01-15-2011 11:53 AM

I just completed piecing the top to a quilt for my granddaughter (almost 12). She too picked out her own material. Her room is purple with green curtains...and odds and ends furniture like her blue desk! So...her quilt is made of Happy fabrics in orange, purple, teal, black and white....oh, and some green. I'll try to get a pic on the website asap. It looks wild...but she really likes it. Your quilt looks just fine.

Carol Wilson 01-15-2011 12:44 PM

Ignore the "Quilt Police" just do what you enjoy.

If everything "matched" in our homes how boring.

pdcakm 01-15-2011 01:07 PM

the color of quilts vs matching is the same rule about blue denim. they go with everything. besides, the design police are usually at the donut shop with the quilt police. so do what makes you feel good.

cheryl rearick 01-15-2011 02:31 PM

I think it is in personal taste and what we like. I for one have hodge podge... just the way it is. :)

dixiechunk 01-15-2011 03:06 PM

It's called stepping out of your box and I thik everyoe should do it occasionally. JMHO

fireworkslover 01-15-2011 04:09 PM

I love the purple, blue and black in your star. I think you shouldn't worry about what other's think of your color choices. If you are making items for yourself, pick colors you like. I too have a similar design wall, except I put in screw in cup hooks in the wood molding over the closet door, then tied a loop of string that hangs on the hook, another screw in cup hook goes in a piece of 1" X 2" that's in a sleeve in a big piece of flannel (wider than the closet opening). I have sleeves on two sides, so can have it two ways: long from top to bottom or long widthwise.

I'm curious (and a bit paranoid),
Trna

Never mind what anyone says. Is your house red and green? Well, you probably use red and green for Christmas, don't you, with no dire consequences... like nobody's eyes popped out of their heads, and nobody screamed "help!". Same with orange and black for Halloween, and spring colors for springtime and red and white for Valentine's Day. It surely doesn't offend anyone's sensibilities to have an area of one's home decorated in traditional seasonal colors, for goodness' sake! Don't let her intimidate you... if you like your new piece, ENJOY IT and love it! BTW... if you don't like it, you can send it to me. <G>
P.S. Is your SIL an officially certified Quilt Police, or something? If not, she'd better be careful, or she could be cited for criticizing without a license.
