I think if you like something and you put it in your house, then it "goes." :)
Maybe she is hinting that she likes it for herself instead.... lol |
Don't listen to the nay sayers enjoy all the colors. Years ago my sister and I cut a 2 and 1/2 inch block of every fabric in our stash and made a quilt we tried not to duplicate any of the pieces and knew some of the solids were repeated we added prairie points for the edge and finished them with a great shout of accomplishment I still have it on my bed now and love it you can imagine what the matching color would have to be in any room it was placed.

make quilts your scheme ----
your home, your liking no need for paranoia. |
Speaking of matching......quiltlady37 I love the quilt in your avatar....my house is a rustic beige, your quilt would go soooo nicely. If you don't want to part with the quilt (can't blame a girl for trying) would you please let me know what pattern you used? It's beautiful!
As far as the color in my quilts...they tend to reflect my spirit at the time...some are wild, some are not,( I try NOT to quilt if DH and I are having a dispute, if I did, he would be represented by a stick figure and the sewing lines over his lifeless body would represent tire tracks!) :) Not that I would ever quilt like that... heheheheh Thank goodness for seasonal changes when you can swap out table runners etc. Right now after taking down all the Christmas decorations, with all the snow and gray skies, everything looks so bare I find myself thinking it will never end, but then Feb. will roll around and the red hearts will come out and hope springs eternal! It's already happening in the quilt shops! YEA! |
don't know if there are any quilt police anywhere.
|
As an elderly quilter told me once,"The only two things where ANY colors go together is quilts and bouquets or flowers." And I agree with her :)

The only thing my quilts/table toppers/decorative pillow covers have to match is the mood I'm in. I change them all accordingly.

Don't listen to other people. Do what you like, and what makes you happy. It's more interesting if things don't match.
|
Go for it. Your home is 'your' castle. I agree with quiltmania's advice.
|
No one has the right to tell YOU how to decorate YOUR house except perhaps for your DH. And in my opinion most men are smart enough to love whatever you do and keep their mouths
shut about what does and does not "match". |

Flowers, checks, solids, multi colors,
O MY So Pretty in any combo. J J |
When I was doing interior decorating, I kept getting that same question. And my answer was, you can pay someone to coordinate everything and make it look like a palace, but if you don't like it, than it wasn't worth your money. So, if there are colors, accents, pictures etc, that you like.....then that is how you should decorate. I used to coordinate everything from kitchen to bath to laundry room, liv. rm. everything. That was then, now, I decorate in a way that represents me. Native American, traditional, contemporaty, pictures that my grandmother painted, my mom and dad crossed stitched, so to me, when you walk into my house you see me. And that's the way it should be.
|
My house is early attic. For those that do not understand what that is it just means I have no decor or reasoning just whatever I have and whatever I like. My home is mine and if people come to see it instead of me they can stay home. If you like you quilts you do for yourself it does not matter what others think. Of course that is my opinion and everyone has one.

Actually I think you having a home base of neutrals is a positive.. My house is the same way.. I think If you make more than one piece, say the bright coasters and maybe a matching throw or runner = it was done on purpose, a design choice lol
I plan on making several wall hangings for above my fire place with matching throws to go over a chair etc...Switching them out often However, if you just can't get past the cordination thing but are dying to add color... You might try making things with less saturated color. As in lush jewel tones as opposed to bright primary type colors... I'm also going to make my hallway the "anything goes" walkway lol Really, It just comes down to what makes you smile when you walk in the room..No ones comments can top that feeling (smile) |
At 60+ I no longer care much if it matches,I live in my home, it's not a showcase. :D

Typically my 'normal' colors have been more outdoorsy colors, like the greens, browns, burgundy, gold, etc. Wouldn't I just shock everyone if I changed everything up? I'm thinking a nice purple. Yeah, that would show 'em! ha ha They'd definitely think I'd be going through some kind of mid-life crisis. |
I've attempted to keep a "color scheme" throughout the house...but my next major project is a wall hanging that will not go with the rest of the house...it will hang in the living room anyway! I'm learning, as a new quilter, that my quilts are more important to me than the colors in the room! Freedom!

It is Art. It doesn't have to "match" . It makes it's own statement.
|
The heck with "matchy"................you need punches of colour to spice things up. JMHO :)

I also say heck to proper. One daughter has a pea green walls beighe couch brown curtains a red table and a black table and white pic frams. Somehow it looks great and I always say if you are happy thats what counts.
|
It's your quilt and your home so do what makes you happy! The fashion police will be in such awe of your quilt they won't notice if it doesn't match anyway LOL! It will add so much to the room it is in no matter what.

I'm wondering, is it 'proper' to add quilts to your home that don't necessarily 'go' with your color scheme? I'm not talkin' total chaos, but a table runner or coasters and such. Is there some sort of rule that I should be following that I should maybe add at least a color that matches? I'm curious (and a bit paranoid), Trna I say that if it doesn't go with anything, then it must go with everything!!! :D |
very little in my house "matches"
|
I agree with getting rid of the SIL. The quilts must stay.
|
The problem isn't you or the colours- it's the SiL for sure.
|
Ya know, you all gave me a 'new vision' for the new year. I'm going to find the cutest wall hangings, pieced pillows and table runners, and add some color to my house. ALL over the place.
I'd love to find a smaller quilt pattern for each season to hang over the fireplace, as well as different tables runners for different seasons. Anybody have any favorite patterns/books they'd like to suggest? Hummm... this is going to give me even MORE OCD when it comes to quilting. :) I think I'll be the quilting rebel! Pretty bad if that's as wild as I get. ha ha |
Your house, your quilt, your taste. BE HAPPY!

I agree with you Margie. Quilts are used for many things in my home. I have three bedrooms that use quilts (large ones) for bed spreads, in rooms filled with antique furniture. I use dust ruffles and try to pick up a color or two in the drapes in the quilts. The two quilts I use in my bedroom are used differently. One is my warm cover to snuggle under the other one I lay across the bottom of my bed and it matches the colors used throughout the room. I have about six lap quilts in my den which get a lot of use by my family. None of these little quilts match anything, they are just colorful and fun tops from every pattern you can think of. My family has actually asked me before where "their" quilt was, meaning one they had used before and wanted again. I have a home full of antiques and loved collecting them with my husband and know it is sometimes hard to decorate with this furniture. I have however, made my home livable and warm because I did not want a museum. I use colors that please me and make me feel good. My home is my castle and I want my family and guests to feel "at home" when they are here. So, use your quilts, toppers or what ever you like that makes you happy and trade the SIL for some more material.

Do whatever makes YOU happy!!

It's YOUR house!!

I haven't read all the posts on this; if I'm echoing someone else, well... :D
When folks get into the "go with / match / blend" mode of decorating, I sense they've been watching too much HGTV and Martha Stewart, reading Architecture Digest, and need some confidence. Most folks "live" in their homes and "life" isn't always neat, tidy, co-ordinated, and matched. Whenever I've heard folks note what colors "go" and "don't go" together, and couches, lamps, carpets, etc. should (???) co-ordinate, I just have to ask them, "Tell me about your favorite garden and if all the colors and plants in that match or are co-ordinated." Yes, if it's a very formal garden "stuff matches"... but a red rose against the green leaves, per some folks, doesn't go together and is "jarring". Oh, really? At the risk of reduncdancy, you live in your home. Your quilts are a part of you. Enjoy your home. Enjoy yourself. Let others worry about matiching and co-ordinating. I promise you that in 20 years no one will remember that couch, loveseat, accessories, and paint that was co-ordinate. In twenty years, if they're lucky, they will remeber that gorgeous and quirky quilt that took its place proudly among the decorator's delight. |
