Post pictures on here and people would buy them -- j.

I agree...start bec I like the pattern or the "look" but by the time it's finishing up, I know......
I start a quilt because it is a pattern that I want to try. Then depending on the colors, I give it to someone that I feel I want to give it to. IE, I made one specific for my mom, brother and niece. The other two just happened to go to people who I knew would like the patterns!

At this point in my life I know where the quilts I am making are going and for whom. I can't wait to get started on my son's quilt. i made him a small one when I was first starting out but now I want to make him one with circles and all in blues and whites. Have to finish 2 other ones first though.
I make what ever strikes my fancy at that time, I have never had a quilt wait to find a home. my trouble is trying to keep some for my self, so I just make quilts in colors I love and patterns I enjoy making. Then try to hang on to some for my beds LOL
I do it both ways. If I see something I really like, it goes on my list of quilts to make. If I see something I think someone else will like, it goes to the top of the list. I love making the perfect quilt for a particular person.

Right now I am making ones for gifts but want to do something for myself once the holidays are over. There are several small projects I want, table toppers, pillowcases and pillows.
After a few baby quilts I am now working on quilts for my family, which will take a lot of months. When I get everyone sorted I want to sew for the local children's hospice and maybe hospital too if they allow. The quilts can be smaller and I think I will be more experienced so I hope the children will be happy with them.
Mostly, I make a particular quilt because I like it instead of
making it for a particular person or occasion. I like something different & ususal. |
I belong to two Guilds and we have several projects.....Baby quilts for needy babies at the local hospital, Community quilts for people who have serious injury or health issues and Disabled Vets at the Annual Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic held each year at Snowmass Ski Resort. If there are any left I have nine Grands and three daughters with spouses. I keep a few for gifts.

Allllll Mine Mine Mine! (laugh) Of course, I just started quilting hehehe
I've not made many so I am making them now for my children. I have 5 so I have plenty to do!
I started quilting in earnest when I retired last year. Now I am on a mission to gift my immediate family with quilts from me. Then, of course, there are the wedding quilts for youngsters getting married and baby quilts for keeping those new babies warm, LOL. In two years I have not managed to make 1 for me until now. I have one on the table now that I will finally keep for me. It's a bed size. I also want a sofa throw for me. Next year I will be selfish and sew for me, LOL.

most of my quilts are made for our local oncology infusion center, there is always a need somewhere including baby quilts for Life's Choices, Our Military & nursing homes. I don't make huge quilts like I did for my family.

I make them because I enjoy making them. The kids all have several and I have them in a closet. I don't need to have someone in mind. Sometimes, just the relaxation and fun I have making them is all I need to start another one.
Sometimes I start making them just 'cuz' I want to but usually get gifted to my 3 dd and 5 grand kids, keep some for myself. I don't have enough yet, I like to use them to decorate my long banisters seasonally.
eventually I'll make them for donations. warm quilt hugs, sue in CA |
I make quilts for me!! Ok -- I use them in demonstrations and lectures (trunk shows) Usually show around 60 - 70 pieces at each trunk show. Some mini's some wall, some throw, some full size.
Always have a quilt to donate to a fund raiser without having to hurry up and make one. That way the trunk show changes each year as I give them away. Of course family always is in line for a new quilt too. Some I just love to look at and "stroke". Beds all have quilts, quilts hang in every room too. |
I make Baby quilts for our local Hospital. The larger ones i make are just because i want to try a new pattern. If i know someone who wants or needs a quilt...it's their's. There are so many places to donate that one could quilt forever and never have enough.

I make quilts because I love the process of making them! Eventually they all find a home. Someone's birthday, a special occasion, an illness or sadness that requires a "fabric hug". Some of them just stay with me because I can't bear to let them go! (yet)
I always have someone in mind when I make a quilt. However, that said, I am planning one to make just because I think I will enjoy making it.
Mostly I make quilts with no one particular in mind. My quilt production is mighty slow, though, and I have no finished quilts needing a home right now... just lots of quilt tops + several WIPs, both piecing & quilting.
I make mine for family. I'l be glad when I can make one for myself or just to be making one. Do what makes you happy.

I've made 8 and have given them to grandkids...have 5 more to go for them and then will start on one for DH and then my kids. I'm trying to come up with ideas for two grown boys right now...both graduated from school. Have no idea what to do...maybe a rag quilt...perhaps 2 rag quilts!! They live in two different states and would never know they are alike!! LOL! But won't work too hard on them before Christmas, anyway, so I have time to think on it.

:P Heavens to betsy,
There are a million places to give quilts--they don't have to be big. Pillowcases for children, lap quilts and medium quilts to ANY organization-Quilts of Valor, baby quilts for all the hospitals, for dialysis centers, animal centers for dogs and cats--okay it isn't a "person" to give it to, but imagine how thrilled someone would be to get something from someone that cared. Get to sewing ya'll. Peg-TX Innova 18" |
I usually see a quilt pattern and think "I have to make this for........I always have a person in mind. I really want to make on for myself.
most of the time i make them because i like the pattern, but if i need one for a gift i will have one ready to give away ( thats if i can part with it )
Some I make for a certain person as a gift but most I just make because I love to try new patterns & techniques.
I make them because I like them or want to learn a new technique. Sometimes I sell them if anyone shows an interest and sometimes I give them away to friends or to charity. It's all good fun in any case.
Pick me, pick me. lol I just make mine for someone I love or some cause. I choose the pattern and colors to suit the person. I am just now starting one for my sonin the Navy. I am starting the Ship @ Sea and doing it in different blues and greys for the sky and water. I will use white for all the sails and blacks for the ship part. I have some nautical material ordered I will put in one of the borders on it.
I'm a quilting animal and usually turn out 1 a wk...I sell them on ebay be it "top only" or "full quilt". I like to mail them off to friends and family as surprises. Then there's charities and for our Soldiers...So there's always a way to rid yourself of over quilting.
Recently I took a class with Bonne Hunter and I decided to make a large lap quilt that I could send to Walter Reed Hospital for the injured military. My family lives in Florida, so who wants a quilt. I have made wallhangings for them with a theme.
I made one for my grandson called Brick Road that I got from one of my older quilting books. You stager the bricks. I made mine with flannel. You can can use scraps.
If interested I will send you the measurements for the size quilt. They used fat quarters I bought the colors in yardage and cut my own squares because it was less expensive. It is so good for a man. The book gives measurements for crib to queen. Maybe the pattern is on the internet. Have fun! Elsie Irene |
you could donate them to a shelter for kids and women...our group make several a year....it is theirs to keep and I get to keep sewing with no guilt..........
I do both. But they all usually end up with someone who wants one. 8-)
