When most of you make quilts, do you make them specifically for someone, or just because you like them? And then what do you do with them? I have so many I want to make, but no one in mind to make them for.
I rarely have anyone specific in mind when I start a quilt, but by the time I am done with it , I usually know exactly who is the intented recpient.
I have made patterns that I thought would be fun, and given them as charity quilts. Others are made with a specific recipient in mind. :D:D:D
Well, I've only just started quilting, and so far, each one has had a recipient in mind before starting. I have plans for several more, all with a recipient in mind. After all those are done and all parents/siblings/grand parents/closest friends get theirs...then I'll start making them for the sake of making them. LOL
I have made a few specifically for my GD's and one for my FIL....
Mostly I just enjoy sewing....needless to say I have many quilts for sale. |
i normally make them with someone in mind of getting them.
i have one that i have made with no one in mind. |
I make the ones I like and eventually someone will ask for them. Am always making new ones for grands as they grow older.

If you make it, a need will arise. I make most quilts because I want to and some for special people. But I have found that there is always someone who could use a quilt (newly wed for the 2nd time, birthday, new Great Grandson, etc.) so it is always nice to have some on hand. Also, I give items to schools and fundraisers. Our neighborhood has a garage sale once a year, and I always manage to sell a half dozen or so. So don't worry about having extra quilts hanging around. They surely won't be there for long!
I have quilts scattered throughout my house & a closet full. I even forget some that are put away if I don't go through them occassionally.
I'm with the others. I don't usually start with a recipient in mind, but sometimes I do, then at the end know of someone who would like it. But I have way too many UFO's. Hope nobody is hanging waiting! lol
i make whatever strikes my fancy and then find a home for it.
Sometimes a pattern or color will just come to me and I make a quilt. I don't usually have anyone in mind, but God does! LOL I have given so many quilts away and am always glad to give.
I usually make quilts with someone in mind. I have 3 requests for queen size at the moment. I only give them to people that I know will take care of them. Who knows one day I may make one for myself !!!!
I am still at the 'for me' stage. I wanted one each for my family and living rooms. next will be one for each of my sons after that I dont have a clue !! Any I will make to give away will go to someone that will take care of them, they are $$ to make.
What I like about quilts is putting the personally into the quilt...I pick a person or house whole...and think of there hobbies/ likes...than I buy the fabric...I was buying fabric when I saw great sales...mistake...I end up having a ton of fabric...I have grown boys so for me...I have to think likes/hobbies....I have made some quilts for Christmas and I really hope they let me know if they like them...not just of that is nice...we all put so much time and love into making quilts. I sometimes wonder if people know that. I did not prior to making them.

I am planning to keep amd enjoy most of the quilts that I want to make. they are all patterns and fabrics that I really like. Am making some for my DG kids.
Everything I have made so far I have made with someone in mind (except I kept one table topper lol). I do have lots of projects on my to-do list with no one in mind. Guess they will be mine once I finish them.
I am getting ready to make one for my daughter :)
I have a bunch I made just because I wanted to. They have all been claimed. There are just two that are just mine. The rest have been requested. My youngest daughter is always bringing home fabric and the pattern for quilts she wants. She keeps me busy.
I make some for me and some for others!
I give away almost all my quilts. Either to family, friends, or charities. I think I only have one quilt that I've made, although I have several that my mother made. I love making quilts with someone special in mind, but I get such a blessing from making charity quilts that I manage to keep myself pretty busy.
Most of mine are gifts. My first one I will keep as I love it and have have two others that are mine a lap quilt as you go and a porch/picnic quilt that is also lap size.
Mine so far has just been made for my own personal family
members and myself, but I would make them even if I had no one in mind to give it to :D |
I have made some especially for one person, as a present or as an order. In general I don't do quilts for use but for exhibitions and shows or for my workshops.
I have my quilts piled high on an unused single bed. I make quilts with no-one in mind and occasionally donate a quilt to charity or to be raffled.
I keep telling myself I must either sell some of them or give more away to charities but just can't make myself part with them just yet. Of course there are some I will never part with, they are way too precious to me. |
Been doing for Meals on Wheels -- Project Moses -Project Linus and now Quilts for Kids. Almost forgot, Quilts for Cruisers (police cars). My daughter just asked for a baby quilt for a friends shower. Always have something on hand. I made some quilts with the cancer ribbon to donate but ending up giving them to my sister and sister-in-laws for their use. My grandson likes to picnic in front of the TV with a small table top size. He out grew the first and it is now in the car on the seat under his car seat. I pick up the material where ever I can and sometimes people just give me some. I always find room for it. Even stuffed a bean bag type foot rest with fleece and flannel till I need it. Great place for grandchild to fall asleep.
I started a quilt with lots of purple shades.... for me.....by the time it was finsihed I knew it had to go to my sister....
Children's hospitals, Fire departments etc. Many places to donate,
I generally make Art Quilts to decorate my walls. Last year I made one for each of my sons for their bedroom wall in their apt. The last quilt, I made and finished in Aug., is going in the last large space in my house. I have to think about the finished size before I start another one, and where I'll hang it. I do have a two sided pieced queen duvet to finish.
I always have someone to make a quilt for, someone gets married, people all around me are having babies (my cousin just had her girl yesterday), someone's birthday, Christmas, etc....I rarely have time to make one just because I like the pattern, unfortunately. My quilt bucket list is getting longer every day.
I love to make quilts - and I live to try out patterns. I find if I make them baby to twin size and give them to Charity I can try all the patterns and colors I want. And I know they will be used. This year I made 108 and gave them all to Linus (not all at once - but several times during the year). I got to try out all kinds of patterns and had a real good time doing it.
I love making quilts, when I first started I always had it planned for someone, (grandchildren, son, daughters). Now I am into making quilts because I love the pattern, fabric, or the new tool I get to try out. And they now go to the person that says, "I love this quilt". So far I do not have a homemade quilt on my own bed. LOL Maybe next year.
I'm currently working my way through Harriet Hargrave's Quilters Academy series - the first book has 11 projects and the next has about the same. Before I start a project, I do identify a recipient - this helps me to choose a color scheme - and I know that I don't need 30 or 40 quilts around our home.
Cheers, K |
I always know where mine is going. I would love to just sit down and start sewing for fun but never do.
i usually make them for other people - if its for me it seems to take forever no matter how much I love the pattern so I only have two that I have actually made just for me
I make what inspires me! As for finding homes, I don't worry about. Sometimes, a quilt finds it's own home. So make all you want, & don't even worry about it. I quilt for me, so it's better if I don't always have a home for one in mind at the time. Sometimes that makes it feel more like work, & that, I don't need. Just pure enjoyment, so quilt away!..

You could make lap quilts and donate them to a nursing or assisted living home. My quilt guild gives them to local hospitals, hospices, and women's shelters. They are always greatly appreciated by those receiving them.
