Yes, I have quilts hanging in my bathroom for the last 12 years and they are still fine.

It doesn't matter how small and friendly the restaurant is, the owners cannot guarantee 100% "niceness" in their customers. Think about it, would you buy a quilt that had been hanging in a public bathroom for who knows how long? When was the last time you went shopping in a restaurant bathroom?? Sorry to be so blunt, but I think it would be a real mistake. Besides the physical danger, it gives the impression that you do not think very highly of your own work. |
IMHO, anything made of cloth is a magnet for bacteria. :hunf: Even hand towels have been replaced by paper towels or hot air blowers in public bathrooms.
Instead, how about a good quality, framed quilt photo? |
I think since this restroom is so small I will let it go without a quilt. Having them on display out in the restaurant is enough.
I still want to do an attic window one for my own bathroom so it will have a 'window'. Right now I have a customer quilt to go finish, another customer quilt arriving by the end of the week and I'm working on a Winter wall hanging, fall table runner and two matching place mats! gotta go get busy the weekend is running away from me! ;) Updating the blog yesterday so that is good for a day or too. Enjoy. Happy Quilting! Phyllis QuiltingGrannie |
In the Sonora, CA, area a LQS had an incredibly beautiful rag quilt, baby size, in the bathroom. It was a single toilet room with in an older, classic, building. I loved sitting there looking at that quilt. I went home and made two for grandchildren.
Since it wasn't a Joann's type place I don't think having anyone take it was an issue. They'd be able to figure out who took it pretty easy. I thought it was a lovely idea. |
How about a nice framed photo of one of your full sized quilts for the bathroom in the restaurant? Show them the beauty of your work without loss or damage.

How about a quilt with an 'outhouse' theme? |

Phyllis, I just wanted to say that I enjoyed your blog. Your quilts are beautiful.
In my home, wallhangings are often in the bathroom as are quilted toilet back toppers - I change these to coordinate with the seasons and holidays. I don't see a problem displaying a quilt in the restaurant bathroom as long as it is secured to the wall. |

If you were going to do something - what about a small framed quilt - IN A BIG FRAME |

Below is the quilt I have in the guest bathroom. Totally appropriate for a bath! Can't remember who put out the pattern, but it was a long time ago.

I can see a cowgirl with boots and a cowboy hat! In TX we make quilts the state of TX shape with 2" square blocks sewn together. Maybe in TN, you could do that, as it is a distinctive shape. You could put the cowgirl on the outside of the bathroom door, then maybe noone would take it.

Yes, I just made a shower curtain out of a quilt pattern. I didn't batt it I put on backing and just just tied it off. Now I am making another for my other bathroom. I will be doing the same (different pattern) not putting in batting just tying off. Here is a picture:

I have several of my quilts/wall hangings on display and for sale at a local restaurant and when I went into the restroom (which is tiny, but has wall space) I thought I would make them something small to display in the restrooms. Any suggestions? Patterns to use? It's a country style decor overall, even if my quilts there are a wide variety of styles. Phyllis QuiltingGrannie Quilter's Pantry |

If it is a small quilt, and you can frame it under glass........that might be OK. In a bathroom, unframed, that is just too tempting to a thief! Remember, thieves walked away with quilts from the Houston Quilt Show a few years ago. A lot of quilt shows have losses! YIKES!! |

I have quilted wall hangings in the bathrooms at my house and I regularly take them down to launder and check for any damage.

I have seen this done and the FRAME is screwed to the wall securely....just a thought

I have a small quilt in both of my bathrooms. One is an embroidered piece with a simple border. The other is a small foundation pieced quilt. I also have a crewel embroidered picture in one of these bathrooms. They go with the decor and if they don't last 100 years, I'm okay with that. I want to enjoy them not pack them away. :)

Hi, I read about research done on germ circulation when toilets were flushed without the lid down -- the result was a great surge of germs travelling around the toilet/bathroom area. After that, I keep my toothbrush in a zipped bag (also stops the cockroaches feeding off the brush, but that is another story!), and no longer keep folded un-used hand towels on display. So a quilt in your own bathroom would be fine, but I certainly wouldn't be interested in buying anything that was on display in a public toilet, where most people don't put down the lid when they flush.

I agree with Ghostrider. Ick! Not the restroom.

Just a thought, but how about a decopaged,(darn I wish I could spell) quilt, do the quilt, but don't quilt it, but decopage it to ply wood, then it would stay protected, and you could wipe it clean, and people could see your work, but maybe put it above a mirror.
GOD bless. Penny |
I have a 30" square wall hanging in one bathroom...the kids' bathroom with LOTS of steamy showers. It's been hanging there for 8 years or so and have had no problem. Germs??? IT matches the decor of that room. Probably have lots of airborne germs in my house, as do most people.
|
I wouldn't hang one in a public place... probably not my own bathroom either... someone would try to use it as a towel!

Quilters know that things wash and would recognize fine craftsmanship in a second. I don't think that it devalues her work at all. |
