This morning I opened the front page of the Washington Post online edition as I always do. The Post had a photo essay of medical evacuations from Bagram Air Base, just outside Kabul, Afghanistan. In many of the photos showing wounded service men awaiting air transport to Germany, the guys were covered with colorful quilts! Made me think of all of you quilters who do this work for our guys and gals in the military. The photos on Washington Post don't stay very long, but I will provide the link here just in case you are able to catch the article.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...rtslot#photo=6 God bless you quilters who send reminders of love to our military personnel. God bless our troops! |
Thanks for the link, I will check it out!
Wow! That is wonderful. Thank you so much for sending that link. It is great to see that the quilts are getting used by the soldiers. Thanks again.
Those are hard clips to watch but the quilts add some comfort for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Thankyou for this link. It brought tears,I am glad these photos are being shown to the public least they forget that we are free because of these young men and women who give so unselfishly!
NEVER FORGET..... |
Thanks for a reminder that our passion for quilting can provide some comfort to others in need. Thanks to all the quilters who selflessly donate their time and effort for such great causes.
That is awesome!
What an emotional thing to see. My thanks to all those young soldiers for their service , and to all you quilters who provided the quilots . What a wonderful thing!!
Thank you for sharing. We just started an American Legion Auxiliary here about 6 months ago and were able to collect 57 boxes of goodies to send to our troops in Afghanistan. Included in those boxes were homemade fleece hats and lots of other stuff to let our guys know we appreciate what they are doing. Have discovered many projects we can sew things for to send .. one of those being to send to those in the hospitals.
Very moving photos.
Thank you for sharing that link. My heart aches after looking at those pictures of our wounded soldiers. It was wonderful to see the soldiers covered in quilts and blankets made with loving hands though.
I am glad this link has been posted. It shows that there realy is a need for mor Quilts of Valor. It is the goal for the organization for each and every service member gets a quilt. I sure hope this helps more people to make em and ship em out to the great members of our armed forces.
Thank you, "Mom," for posting this link. I have sent it on to my nonquilting friends so they can more fully understand the deep symbolic message each quilt carries and how valuable our contribution of handiwork is. Pictures speak more than a thousand words.
This can really get to the heart and proof that our quilts did get to OUR men. Thank you for posting this.
How wonderful to see the men wrapped in the fruits of our labors. To know that some soldier somewhere is benefiting because we took the time to stitch pieces of fabric together then send it on to a group devoted to getting it to these men for their use. It humbles me and yet fills me with pride at the same time. Like the little girl telling her daddy when he complimented the dinner, "And I helped."
If these photos don't stir all quilters to participation in some kind of program, I will be amazed. Thank you so much for sharing this link. I am a better person today because of it. |

Alot of groups donate quilts to the injured and KIA families. So i figured they were covered by lots of loving and generous quilters..
when my son was on the front lines, he asked for a quilt. (said he wanted to be wrapped in his moms arms and night) so i started by making him one and it snowballed to others in his group/flight/platoon,whatever you call them..both of his deployments, i made quilts, although with the second deployment, he wanted one in fleece..with the help of fellow quilter friends here at home. There is a group that i know of that does the same thing.. "QWL"-Quilts with Love program. They tie alot of them. but a wonderful thing to do..the pictures he took of his little room and bed, looked a little like home! bless all the people that are able to help out in this ways and other ways too! thanks for sharing the link! sorry the picture is so small..he is holding the corner of his quilt up.. He wrote on the "thank you card" "Keeping us warm, keeping you free" |
Thanks for the link. My nephew is in Afghanistan and we worry about him constantly. He requested a fleece blanket. I sent him one I made with camo fleece and I embroidered an outline of the state of Texas and put his monogram in the center. He loves it, but I think I'll make him a quilt too.

Thank you so much for posting this link. I have sent it on to my non-quilting friends. Thank you to all who quilt for 'Quilts of Valor'! and God Bless our Troops!

As the mother of a military.... I say thank you to all for the great job they do to prepare our wounded for comfort. Thank you so much for sharing these pictures. It brings both tears and pride to this proud mom.

Luvstoquilt301, Thank you for posting the information about the National Geographic program. I "watch" a lot of National Geographic shows while I quilt, so I will definitely be tuned to this one. Your quilts are beautiful! That first one, the log cabin, is especially wonderful, but then again I never met a log cabin I didn't like. Somewhere in the drab, dirty, messy areas of our world those quilts are the brightest spots in the lives of 3 soldiers. Thanks to you and to all the quilters on this board who makes quilts for the service personnel. |
Wow..these made me cry...my son was killed in Ramadi Iraq..he died in route to Bagdad....hard to watch but glad to see the soldiers are receiving love quilts to keep them as comfortable as possible...blessings
now i am having a heart warming cry. that just makes me so happy to see that the quilts are being used for comfort as they were meant for. God bless all of you who are making quilts for these men and women.
