Rag Quilt binding?
I am working on my first rag quilt, and wonder about the outside edge - does one bind like normal, or "rag" it? Thanks for your input.

I usually rag mine on the edge also, but you could bind it. I do use a 1/2 inch seam as it leaves a little extra space for clipping.
|
I do the rag edges. I don't think I have ever seen a rag quilt with binding but I don't see a problem doing it if that's what you want.
|
I snipped my edges. I forget what seam allowance I used for the blocks, but I used the seam seam allowance all around the outside of the quilt when I had it totally assembled and then snipped like the seams between the blocks.

Can't help you there. I've never done one. Be sure to post when finished!

I rag the outside edge of my rag quilts, but I once saw one that had binding around the edge, and it looked nice. I think the lady who made it thought it would make the edge stronger than a ragged edge, but either way is fine.

i've done both= either way is fine & your choice-
personally i prefer to bind mine- but that is just my preference- i've made a number of them with ragged edges- i just after construction stitch about 1/2" all the way around the quilt twice- then clip - they come out ok- i just prefer them the other way- but it is your project & what ever way you prefer is perfectly ok- |
Here is a good tutorial link

I snip my outside edge, I also sew a double line of stiching around the outside about 1/8 apart for extra strength.

I've done many rag quilts and have always clipped and cut the outside edge. Never thought about binding it. One reason I liked doing the rag quilt was that I didn't have to do binding.
