You're way ahead of me. I haven't tried a rag quilt yet (although I placed an order for some flannel Dr Seuss fabric so I can try one).
|
Don't sell yourself short. Give it time. God didn't make the world in one day so don't expect to be a professional right off the bat. Practice. Make one block at a time. Try out the block with paper to see what it should look like. DO NOT GIVE UP
|
Do what makes you happy, and if that's sticking with what works, then do that. On the other hand, don't be discouraged if the first few projects using other techniques didn't come out quite right. It takes some practice. You can do it!

If rag quilts suit you and you enjoy making them then do it! Honest, there are no quilt police!

OOps! |
Every rag quilt I have made has been joyfully accepted and used. They are loveable and cuddly. Kids, (and older) are not afraid to use them. I have made many quilts, but the rags are the most loved of all. Go for it and do what you love to do. And, if you choose to try something new, enjoy that and know it does not have to be perfect to be lovely and enjoyed. Happy stitching!! ;)

There's room in the quilt world for you to be you, and do what you like to do.
But remember we're here for you when you want to spread your wings a little or alot. |
Nothing at all. Just do what you like best.

Rag quilts are what I plan on doing since I am taking up quilting so late in life (72 yrs old), I do not think I would ever get the poeced quilts finished. I should finally get my sewing room set up next week and get started on some rag quilts for my great grandchildren for Christmas.
Take care. Linda |
Good afternoon all, hay babyboomerquilter, is there any pictures of your rag quilts that you have done. I have not tried on yet but looking forward to finding the time. :-)
|
Go with what makes you happy.
|
Do what you enjoy! I have made some beautiful rag quilts from both home spun fabric that I bought and old flannel shirts picked up at yardsales. I love them. I enjoy hand work so applique is what I do the most of and hand quilting.
|
It's your quilt journey go where you want to. Enjoy the trip :)
|
What's rag quilting anyway?
|
Make what makes you happy!

I have sewn forever so I thought jumping in and making a quilt was "no problem", didn't quite work out like that. Nothing went together like I thought they should it was so much more than I had expected. I can only suggest practice. But what will help is like one stated Ellen Burns but go to You Tube and you can have lots of help. Mousuri(sp) quilt everyone here with all the help is amazing. Lots of Tutorials tha will help. Triangles are difficult becuse they stretch. Points are difficult in so many way but lots of tricks to help. Each type of quilting is interesting that doesn't mean it is for you. Don't be hard on yourself. Each mistake is a learning point either you say you can do better or say maybe this is just isn't for you. Just keep in there and you will be amazed.

i think what i love about rag quilting is really it is very relaxed. no major measuring, no pressure to make sure your seams are right on point...because with raggies...you can always hide your mistakes. it's very relaxing to me. you would be surprised how many diffrent ways you can arrange those simple squares and just by changing the colors and patterns...

It seems to be important to do whatever makes you happy. At some time you might want to learn something else, but it is solely at your pace. Enjoy yourself!

Make rag quilts if that makes you happy. I started out making baby quilts out of panels and rag quilts. Then i added string quilts, now i make all kinds of quilts. But i still make rag quilts because my family loves them and you can relieve a lot of stress while you are snipping...Lol.
Do what you enjoy. Life is too short not to be happy. Happy quilting. Pamela |
I'm back to doing traditional quilting, but did raggy quilting for a couple of years. I still love them, because when you're finished, you're finished! So, if that is what you want to do, then do so.

Everyone is good at something and if rag quilts if for you then go for it you may even come up with some new look. Relax and be happy. Sue

Love rag quilts! I have made 2 so far and I really like doing them too.

Rag quilts are wonderful. Do what you enjoy making. If you get bored, try something different for a while but if you love rag quilts that is what you should make.
|
Sounds good! I have the same issue! I have tho, as of a couple of days ago bagun to try to piece a double wedding ring quilt for my nephew and fiancee' wedding present I hope I can have the patience it takes... My Grandma would be proud! She made one for each of us! Happy quilting!

Sorry I have taken so long to respond. I have been doing inventory at work. I have found applique to work real well on the rag quilts. I choose my patterns from several sources. I browse on line for pictures or words (I like to personalize the baby quilts) or I will use a quilt templet for the design. To apply I can use a fusible stabilizer, then just apply with a zig zag stitch around the edge. You can stitch in about half a inch from the edge on some designs and clip it like the rest. Here is one I helped my granddaughters make for there mom...

Love the idea of applique! Never thought about blending applique with a rag quilt... how cute!

Looks very nice. I didn't know you could finish the edge like that I like it better. Good job. Sue

I like the ease of rag quilts. But, like Janell, I use Eleanor Burns books. She cuts generous then you square up so all blocks are the same size. pressing is most important.
