so i tried patchwork...not good.i even tried half square triangles and it just didn't come out right.. i just don't get it. it's very frustrating. i think i really need to stick with what i enjoy..rag quilting with just solid shapes...squares, rectangles.so i thought, i guess it's ok if i rag quilt exclusively....what's wrong with that?

No problem with that... but I was like you I only did denim quilts and no quilting. Then I got a book from Eleanor Burns quilt in a day, she has such great instructions on how to do a block that seems so complicated. She stresses about pressing apposing seams so they match perfectly and how to sew an exact 1/4 inch seam. It was a lesson that I learned so so much from, I did it on my own with her book and then I watched several video on you-tube about making quilts... It helped me out...If you want to learn more, there is a lot of free info out here to help you... also use this sites "search" and you can find lots of tutorials on just about everything...

Always do what you want to do. No more, no less. I love the look of rag quilts but I've never made one. I'm stuck on blocks with themes such as Loralie panels, that kind of thing. Wish I could get off my theme thing but I enjoy it, so there you are!

I started out with doing rag quilting and with help from everyone here it has helped me to get out of my comfort zone. My quilts are not great but with each one I get better.I enjoy learning from my mistakes. LOL Well maybe enjoy is not the right word, but I am learning a lot and I do enjoy that part. :XD:

What ever you do, it should be fun and relaxing, not cause you stress. If you enjoy doing rag quilts then do them! The heck with what anyone else thinks.

I only do what I think I will enjoy and I don't care what others think. I have tried new things, some I liked and some I didn't, but it was my choice!!!

So do what is fun and comfortable for you and don't worry about what others can do or what you think you ought to be doing.

Like everyone else has said, do whatever you like. You will know when you are ready to try something else. Read all you can on what quilts please you and you will have an easier time.

I have thought about making a rag quilt, but it seems so difficult. I might try one someday.

Oh my goodness no! Take two squares, rectagles...whatever you like...wrong sides together with some batting sandwiched in between and sew an " X ". Going from one corner to an opposite corner. Then when all your blocks are done...arrange how you like and sew them all together. No border/binding required. Just sew around the outside about 1/2 inch. Then your gonna clip all your seems. Wash and dry and your done! Let me know if i could be of any more help.

You can do what ever you like doing. I will have to admit that last year when I started doing HST & flying geese and anything w/triangles I thought I'd never get the hang of it. Still not so fond of flying geese but not willing to give up. If I didn't have good teachers at my LQS to help I would have given up. Alot of people have problems w/these some do not. Just like some are naturals at FMQ and here I am trying to get my nerves up to make myself to learn. But the main thing when it comes to quilting or anything else in life that is made to make you happy; enjoy the part of it that you do; no matter what it is. Rag quilting is alot of fun to do.

Do what you love in quilting! Mine will probably all be strip pieced somehow because I love sewing strips! I also want my quilts to be used up. Keep up having fun! What else is a hobby for?

You can do it this way or my way; I use the accuquilt cutter and then all I do is the sandwiching, sewing the X and joining them together. They are the easiest things to do; you can use flannel, fleece or even demin and produce great quilts. Your sandwiching can be with or without batting. I then applique designs on the back to make it a reversible quilt.

i even bought a walking foot for my machine(Brother) to use when i sewing my rag squares together and i don't like it....i'm probably the only one who doesn't like it!...lol

What is probably better is to gradually expose yourself through some quilting classes to increase your quilting skills. Exceedingly few quilters just overnite became adept at the skills we use in our craft. Practice, practice, practice. ... and having good quilting buddies.

I am still a beginner and still love to play with rag quilts as well as basic pieced....We all quilt for our own reasons and as long as we enjoy what we do we are doing it right. If you want to try something I have started a few appliques on my rag quilts

You should do what you enjoy!! If you haven't taken a class from a good quilting instructor, you might also try that... it helped me so much!

Enjoy those rag quilts, though... You must remember that the recipients of your quilts will LOVE them!!

Learning, and growing at your own rate gives the best results.
That yields personal satisfaction when the quilt is completed, perfect or not, and, whether anyone else approves does not matter. You have grown in ability and you can see it right in front of you. To keep on growing is so important. That is what keeps a quilter interested in continuing the work.

I love rag quilts...especially recycled denim ones which I make all the time. Only problem is... I stopped up my washing machine drain with the last one and it cost big $. I will take to commercial laundrymat in the future. Keep on doing what YOU love and enjoy!

If that is what you enjoy doing, then do it! If you have to do something you don't enjoy just becuz you feel it is required, then it is no fun at all and you are apt to not stick with it. So keep ragging and enjoy!

I also started with rag quilts. They are so forgiving. Then I went to the turning twenty pattern (also easy). Now I'm into Eleanor Burns quilting around the world. We'll see how that turns out... I love reading everyone's comments and seeing your pictures.
