The only subscription I get is Fons & Porters Love of Quilting. I think that's the one. Shadow gets the same one.
As for an easy one, I don't really think there is one. Maybe one of McCall's mags might have what you are looking for, but when I look thru the magazines, there are patterns for all levels of quilters.
I know, doesn't help, does it....

Zoo 01-11-2009 07:33 AM

One mag I see regularly is called "Big Block" somthing-or-other. It features quilts made only with large blocks, and most seem pretty easy.
I think it might be put out by McCall's.

What about 'Quick Quilts' think its by McCalls, as they are quick you would presume they are easy wouldn't you :D

candi 01-11-2009 09:49 AM

As I am new to quilting(and sewing actually), my husband's aunt, who is a quilter, mailed me three magazines: The Quiltmaker, Quilter's World, and McCall's Quick Quilts. All of them had beautiful projects that ranged from beginner to experienced. HOwever, my favorite is the Quiltmaker, it was easy to follow for someone like me with not much quilting vocab. and very little if any expereince, I am actually working on stuff from that edition. Second will have to be Quilter's world and third Quick Quilts.
Again, I am not judging the quilts themselves, just the instruction and the easiest to follow for me.

the best way to decide is to go to a store that has a large magazine section (and - of course - several different quilting magazines). don't be shy. browse through each one. write down the names of the mags that are most to your liking.

they're all quite expensive so also visit their websites to browse through their free online offerings. the most useful magazines are those that have both great printed issues and lots of free extra goodies online.

when you have narrowed it down to the one (or more) you like best, take out a subscription. you will save about half the cost of buying each issue from the store.

butterflywing 01-11-2009 10:54 AM

try about.com. with janet wickell. it's a good starting place for beginners to try out.

she offers lots of easy blocks in a very good format, with illustrations. print out what you like.

follow the links to blocks or whole quilts and go from there. if you don't have trouble following along from printed material, i think you can go on to fons & porter, too.

let us know what you decide. i'll be interesting to know which is really the best starting point.

Do you have a library close by? maybe they have some of these magazines that you can check out and see what you think without having to feel rushed. Or Barnes and Noble , they have chairs and you can sit there forever ! I get McCalls Quick Quilts and really enjoy it.

Hi Bev...
I have a brain injury so I have problems also.
I went to Joanns this morning and stumbled across a quilt book
CALLED: it's "El"ementary
BY: Eleanor Burns
If you can get to Joanns to look at it ,it is fairly simple in its instructions.
I was really surprised.
I think you would like this book also.
They are on sale 40% off
or you could look it up on Amazon.com and get a used copy.

Bev, I think the advice you have received to go to the store and read some quilting magazines is a good one. Only you will know what suits you and your interests and skill level best.

I have subscribed to Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, American Patchwork and Quilting, and Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting. The only one I still get is American Patchwork and Quilting---for me, it is the one that best meets my quilting needs.

There are a lot of different magazines out there---it is so neat that your aunt is going to give you a subscription!! Enjoy!!

Fons and Porter's Easy Quilts has beginner patterns

I agree with the F&S easy quilts or a McCalls/Better Homes and Gardens one. You may still find patterns that are slightly more difficult but if you hang on to them, you may be interested in the future.

YAY! Fun Mail for Bevanger!!

retrogirl02 01-11-2009 07:46 PM

If you don't have a store with a variety of mags as Patrice suggested, check out amazon.com or similar site where you can read about them and sometimes even check out a couple pages.

minstrel 01-12-2009 03:56 AM

When I started quilting, I picked up McCall's Quick Quilts and after years of doing this I still have a subscription. Most of them are easy, though they do put in some that are perhaps intermediate. But that magazine (and the Quilter's Cache site) basically taught me to quilt.

I've been quilting for only a matter of months. I have bought a handful of mags but the one I subscribe to is McCalls Quick Quilts. I really like it.

Is the wording easy to understand? I had a brain tumor yrs ago... so I have a hard time understanding a pattern

I just had my 13 yr old son who has no interest in quilting/sewing read it. He says he understands the instructions and could do it. I did notice that most say to look at the assembly diagram. So that makes understanding the written directions easier too. They do a good job of giving you diagrams if it is anything that could be misunderstood.

Hi Bev ~I took out a 3 year subscription to Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting magazine, simply because my sister recommended it and I got a good $ deal by signing on for the 3 years. HOWEVER, I've been disappointed by the amount of "easy/beginner" quilt patterns they offer. I can see why my sister likes it, since she has been quilting for over 20 years and there are some wonderful higher skill level patterns in the magazine. I'm a fairly novice quilter and quilting is my "therapy", as it were, ...... a creative outlet that destresses me. I don't like it when things turn into frustration. So, have I made any of the lovely quilts in the "Love of Quilting" magazine? Nope, not really. Now, as someone else suggested, Fons & Prter do have an "Easy Quilts" publication that I have purchesed from time to time and I find those patterns very do-able. Nita

Nita 01-15-2009 06:32 AM

My JoAnn's carries this magazine. I think it might only be a 4X/year publication, though I'm not sure about that. If not, try searching Fons & Porter website. Can I also suggest the book "Beginner's Luck" by Lynette Jensen? Most of her Thimbleberries quilts are way beyond my skill level, but this book is the exception. I know you asked about a magazine subscription, but as far as books go this has been my absolute favorite "go to" book for easy patterns. You can probably find it on Amazon.com. Hope I've been helpful to you ~ Nita

Barbm 01-15-2009 07:05 AM

so... what have you decided to do?

Nita 01-15-2009 07:11 AM

You're welcome, Bev! Glad to be of help. Happy quilting ~ Nita

Walmart carries a lot of quilt magazines here.

Fons and Porter's Easy Quilts is a great choice. Also look at Quilt magazine. They are all very, very easy and quick patterns.

For myself, I get the Fons & Porter magazine. I really like it & have learned so much from it.

Rose Marie 01-15-2009 09:20 AM

I subscibe to a half dozen quilt mags. I have never made a quilt from one yet but love to look thru them.
El Burns is going to publish a mag. coming out in April.
Her patterns are the easiest of all.
Do you watch Quilterstv? It is free and I find that watching a video is alot of help. You can buy a membership to QNN also. Its about $24 a yr and worth it for beginners. They have all the best teachers and especially El Burns. I have learned so much by watching videos but still have to do alot of practiceing to get good at quilting.
Quilterstv is a web site by the way. Be sure and watch Billi Lauder, she does some really simple shortcuts.

I agree. EB is great! I've completed a log cabin and irish chain and working on URR from her books. They are fast and easy. She has step by step pictures and instructions. I plan on subscribing to her mag too!

I've watched Billie on QuiltersTV and used some of her short-cuts. I'd like to get a couple of her books too.

She really has the ability of reaching out to people like me that have brain injuries. That's what amazes me the most.I'm sure that her being a teacher has the biggest impact of all.I think it would have been wonderful to have her as a teacher growing up.

I thought they were pretty easy. They have lots of pictures of the steps too so you can see how it's supposed to go.

Bev,I have a current subscription to McCalls Quick Quilts and they just sent me an email that if I renew now I can send a one year as a gift. Would you be interested in this ? Just pm me your name and address if you are interested. I am sure its just a way for them to reach more quilters and hope that after the free year you will want to continue on your own.

my favorite quilting mag is "Quiltmaker" I recommend this mag to all of my beginning quilters, just because of the way it is laid out and the wonderful instructions
Hope this helps Froggy

weezie 01-17-2009 09:48 AM

I have a few hundred magazines and many different quilting "how to" books. If it's an option for you, you should purchase a book for beginner quilters. It would be far superior to ANY magazine. I've seen really good ones which include large color illustrations for everything. A good book covers about everything you would need to know. I would prefer all my books to have spiral spines (or whatever I'm trying to say) so they stay open to any page, but most of them do not have the spiral. If you have a used book store in your area, it might have inexpensive quilt books on the shelf; also Connecting Threads and other mail order quilt product suppliers often have their "How To" books on sale OR if you have a Joann's nearby and a 40% or 50% off coupon, they have quite a large selection of books to choose from as well.

Bevanger 01-17-2009 09:50 AM

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR HELP AND IDEAS.... THEY'RE HELPING ALOT

weezie 01-17-2009 10:23 AM

I forgot to say that I don't recommend any of the many magazines that I've subscribed to for over a decade for a beginner who needs to learn the basics (plus a mag. subscription costs as much as a good book). The magazines are really good for AFTER you've learned the basics ... many of my magazines were free introductory offers. If I'm not impressed with the free issue, I write 'cancel' on the invoice and return it. Quilt World has that option available; if you have a computer and can go on-line and access Quilt World, perhaps you can find the 'free trial issue' offer. Many others offer a free trial issue, also.

Bevanger 01-17-2009 11:07 AM

I know all the basics, just want ideas and inspiration :D

dlf0122quilting 01-17-2009 11:15 AM

If you do not want to use magazines all the time, try going into the website www.quilterscache.com and in their dropdown menu is a place that says blocks galore or something like that and there are plenty of block patterns with instructions to help you get a handle on how to make different blocks. It tells you how easy or difficult they are by the little symbols on the side of each block pattern and what kind of method is used. You can also look them up by size of block you want to make.
