Bad pictures, sorry, but this is the quilt I picked up at a garage sale. The woman who sold it to me told me her mother made it in the late 40's maybe as late as 1950. I asked for her mom's name, but she couldn't remember much. I am guessing it was made to celebrate the end of WWII. The needlepoint is very consistent. I think the pink and blue look 30's ish, but wonder if it's hard to tell with solids? If you have any insight about the patterns used for the needlepoint or possible age of the fabrics please let me know. :)

What a find! With the theme of V for Victory, I would guess the date at close to the end of a World War.
It is hand "embroidery". The morning glory flowers are the same as some that I stitched in the 1950's. I remember buying patterns at the 5 & dime store.
You have found a treasure!
great find very nice!!!
I remember these flowers from the forties.....it's where I began stitching. What a treasure!!
I suspect it is celebrating end of WW2 and if I were sewing it I would have started in about 1944 (Wars end) and I would have taken a few years to finish it!
What a treasure. Probably made after WWII.
Very pretty and a lot of time and work went into the making. Lucky for you to get it.
Awesome find
Gorgeous quilt!
I wish I had found it 1st!! Beautiful
What a wonderful find. (saved, rescued!) I hope you finish it. I bet the quilter is smiling down on you. I love hand embroidery. It's really pretty.
I am almost embarrassed to say how much I got it for. ($10.00) but I also think she's glad someone bought it that appreciates it. If I were independently wealthy, she would have gotten more from me, as it was, she got my entire garage sale budget lol
It's beautiful! I think it's so sad that no family members wanted it, but glad you found it so that it will be cherished.
What a great find! I'm surprised that she sold it.
Wow..that is lovely. What a find.
You never know what memories the DD had of her mother. Maybe not good ones.
I love it. You are lucky to find it. The V for Victory sounds just like WW2 Adds. I would bet she started it right after WW2.
Turns out my boyfriend is acquainted with her husband, i may get the chance to see more of her mom's work, or at least see if she remembered any more about it.
great discovery -- !
I would also think it was started at the beginning of the war with the intention of having it finished for the end.
A wonderful piece of history and I think this one really should be researched for the history. A good conservatory can help with dating and appraising it. I really think you have a great find in this quilt. peace |
Beautiful quilt!! I would call it "Victory Garden" when it is finished.
That is really special and the comments above are right on target. A division of Vogue patterns used to publish embroidery patterns that had the florals like this quilt. I would suggest that you contact a quilt guild if you are not a member and ask them about the state organization-all states have them. If you contact them they can recommend an appraiser or quilt historian who could really be of help in identifying the quilt and its components.
what a beauty, love the embroidery, too! cherish it!
Congratulations on your quilt find! Truly a real treasure, and I'm glad that someone has it who will appreciate it. I cannot imagine any of my brothers or sisters selling a quilt that our grandmothers or our mother made. Those are truly heirloom pieces, IMHO! Treasure this quilt. Again, congratulations!

Not only the beautiful embroidery but the fabric looks to be in excellent condition. Please post when you complete the quilt.
What a beautiful treasure....How could anyone part with it? Good that it found a loving home!!!
Lovely quilt...what a treasure! Even though the V's are floral designs, they might have represented Victory Gardens which were planted during both World Wars, both in family yards and public parks. Mostly edibles which supported the food shortage on the Homefront.

Such a treasure, so sad, not even her daughter wanted it..............................

You have a treasure! I would love to know its history!
So glad you found it and are giving it the good home it deserves. It would be especially great if you are able to find out more about it through your boyfriend's acquaintance. Please place that info on the label when you get it done. I'm sure the mom is smiling down on you knowing her quilt finally found a forever home.
What a find...we never know why a treasure like this gets put on the market, but now you can preserve it. Thanks for sharing.

*** Great save. *** Treasure it. *** |
It's a lovely quilt top.
Who knows why a family member does not want to keep something? It is -IMO - much better to sell something like that - even if at a yard sale - than to store it someplace where the mice and mold will attack the item. |
I have no information, but you were very lucky to find this.
My DM had a lot of patterns like that and a lot of them were ordered from the news paper.
