Recent inspiration ...

We have a ceiling-challenged (I can barely even sit up in it) loft in a park mode RV at a vacation spot. We sleep up there occasionally when we have guest in the bedroom, and our grandchildren play and sleep up there. Recently I decided I'd like to leave the sleeping mats out and have them made up for sleeping rather than folding them up. Of course that led to the idea of having right-sized quilts on them. The mats are 24x74, so I will make the quilts about 7" larger all the way around.

In further brainstorming and checking my stash, I remembered purchasing a really cute fabric panel some time ago:

After dragging it out, I discovered that I had given the surfboard square to a friend, so I had 5 pictures to work with. Well, that would be fine for one quilt, but I need two, so I ordered one more panel.

Then I decided I needed two more blocks the same size, so I ordered fabric for those:

I also discovered a batik layer cake that I've had for quite some time, and the colors will coordinate very nicely with the Elizabeth's Studio fabrics to fill in between the panel squares.

Pencil and paper (no EQ) led to working out the design to fit the size I need, and I decided to use this fabric for borders:

I haven't decided on backing (maybe flip-flops) and binding yet, but I'm getting really excited about this project.

I will also want to make fitted mattress pads and sheets to fit these mats, but I'm not so excited about doing that. I may get some at a thrift store that I can remake to fit.

Okay, that's my plan. It feels good to find a use for part of my stash, but it still involves purchasing quite a bit more fabric for this project; as one thing leads to another …

what a fun project! can't wait to see the quilts when they are done!

You got some really cute fabric there! Sure that's going to be a great quilt!

Isn't it already half the fun planning a project? I was just doing the same today, drawing up some blocks, resizing PP papers on my printer, trying to calculate the fabric usage... I just love that part of a project!

That's exactly right. I get so excited I want to start immediately, but now I have to wait for my fabric orders.

You said the quilts will be 7 inches bigger than the mat at 24". I would think the quilts should be about 45 to 48" wide to cover round people when laying down. The length sounds about correct. Have lots of fun with this project.

Those panels are really cute.

Great fabric and the quilt will look great. As for fitted sheets, I made fitted crib sheets for my granddaughter and they are much easier to make than I thought. The tricky part is getting the elastic sewn onto the corners but very doable. Here is a link that may be helpful. I didn't make a hem as such, I just serged the edges and attached the elastic. These were crib sheets and the edges where tucked under the mattress not to be seen......my daughter loved them and the ones that went to day care for the nap mats were a big hit with the teachers there.
here is a link that may be useful to you since your mattress is a different size....

Queen RV mattresses often are 6” shorter. This method would be most helpful. I’ve taken a Queen fitted sheet and sewed a 3” tuck across from side to side, pretty much in the center of the sheet. Then I cut the excess off but leave enough to make a flat fell (or French seam) seam to encase the raw edges.

What a great idea! I might make that tuck and seam closer to one end however, so I didn't aggravate my hips. Closer to the head, under pillows, or closer to the foot, either one would keep that seam out of contact with my body! Love the idea.

That's going to be adorable. The grands will love it. Your approach to a project is a lot like mine, and it evolved as mine usually do, too: necessitating further purchases so the stash doesn't get too much of a dent in it, but my wallet always does. Still, it will be worth it for all the smiles. I can't imagine a cuter design for this purpose.
