It is definitely a feathered star. The sashing is not flying geese. If you look closely, it is a small straight strip with half square triangles attached on both sides.. It is a gorgeous quilt.

Very beautiful. You are lucky to have inherited it.

Ann, that one is definitely just about the same, except for the centre of course. This one was pieced and quilted very expertly and must have taken forever to complete...I bet great grandma would have appreciated the tools available that are shown in that tutorial but in the 1880's it was a much more complicated process! :-)

I thought it would be easier to construct if there were directions for paper piecing. I did find a reference for paper piecing instructions for A Quilter’s Snowflake,Quilters Newsletter Magazine, December 2005 issue, designed and made by
Richard Larson. This one has more points on the stars than the one pictured but if you can find the issue with instructions the paper piecing pattern is on the web at http://www.quiltersnewsletter.com/we...feature190.pdf.
I was wondering if there might be one in EQ somewhere and will have to take a look at my program to see.
I love the red and white quilt pictured! Ann in TN

That is beautiful! I agree that it's a Feathered Star with Flying Geese.

I think the reason that it's hard to recognize as a feathered star is because it is all one color. That being said it is one beautiful quilt. I never thought of sashing that way but it sure makes the quilt!
