Red or blue?
2 Attachment(s)
I've finally finished the appliqué for this quilt (it's driven me a bit mad! I'm not cut out for this amount of appliqué in a quilt!)
I'm having trouble deciding on the sashing colour. It needs to be gender neutral so I've mainly just gone for bright colours. What do you think? |
I vote red...........unless you want a calm quilt.
I like the red. For some reason the blue seems to overpower the beautiful appliqué squares--to my eye at least. The quilt is beautiful by the way. Good job.

I like the blue.
Cute quilt. |
I like the blue, mostly because there is more blue in your blocks than red.
Your blocks are delightful, I especially like the crocodiles. |
Red for me.
Both are nice but I prefer the blue as it ties in with the appliqués. I also like your socks.......tee hee!
i,m always partial to red
Red! (and I like your socks)
Blue for me. It's still a bright, strong color, but I think it looks better with the blocks. It's going to be a cute quilt. (And I like the socks too!)
How about trying a dark brown?
I vote for the blue~~
Cute blocks and I vote for the blue. If you are thinking the blue river will run into the blue background? Bonus! I would add a couple of more alligators on the blue background sashing as if they are swimming around the other blocks.
If you think it makes it too much blue , I'd use green sashing as you have a lot of that in the blocks and maybe add a couple of more monkeys in the sashing. |
Red for me!
Blue is more calming. Love you socks too!!
I like the blue. It is going to be a very cute quilt, no matter which you select.! (And I like your socks too...) :)

I like the playfulness of the red. The blue is much calmer.
I would love to see each block framed in a small border maybe 1/2" wide or less and then blue sashing. The problem I have with the blue sashing is the river and lake seem to disappear into it. But I think a small frame would solve help your cute blocks to stand out more. Now for the issue of what color to chose for the "frame". The red would certainly pop and keep in with the theme of bright primary colors. But it may be too much pop. I have to audition things like that.
red. More gender neutral and the red makes those blocks pop! Really cute!
Why not use both colors? I would frame each block in red then use the blue for the sashing.

Thanks for all the votes :-) pretty much even Stevens so far!
That's a really good idea feline fanatic! I can only lay it out with 4 of the blocks as I only have 4 fat quarters of the red! |
Love the red frame!!
I think both the red and blue overpower your blocks. Unless you can go with something a little tamer, I'd outline those blocks with black to help them stand out.
Have you tried the blocks on a nice sunny yellow? ETA: Opps, should have read to the end... I like the blocks with the red framing on the blue background. It helps the blocks stand out better. Good job. |
I like the red frame on the blue fabric. But I really like Tartan's idea if you go with just the blue and add more "gators" to look like they are swimming between the blocks. That would be really unexpected and different.
The red frame looks really good. That is going to be one cute quilt. Nice job.
I like the blue.
I would go for Red.
I think the applique pieces show up best on the red, some seem to blend in too closely to the blue. How about a red background and a blue border?
All seem to agree--cute socks! I was going to suggest the red but use the lime green for cornerstones to break the red up a bit, yet tie it together. And then came the narrow frame red on blue and I kinda like that, too. Maybe the blue is a bit too intense?? Can you back it off a bit or find a small patterned fabric that let's your work be the focus?
I think the red really pops out the blocks.
I am voting for the red. It shows off your work much better. It is going to be a cute quilt!
Either color works for different reasons as you have read in the previous posts. I lean towards the blue because your blocks are outdoor scenes and the blue reminds me of the sky. Lovely applique!
I think red is the better choice.

I like the blue with crocodiles swimming in the blue. I also like your socks.

I like the red, or the narrow frame. The blue lets the crocodiles escape, and puts the other animals in danger!
Blue for me!

I love the red, makes it pop. The red made me smile, the blue was blah, whatever.
I'm gonna vote 2, or even 3 sashings. Two narrow, one wide. Red frame for sure, make it medium width. Then a narrow border..dark green or brown, maybe a dark blue? That'll calm down the red a bit. Then a wide outer border...in a red tone on tone, or red something anyway. Have fun! I agree about applique...hate it, hate it, hate it. I don't have the patience for it.:) |
Red shows off your applique work more than the blue does and is more gender neutral than blue. Blue isn't bad but I think your work should be front and center so individual blocks are looked at instead of seeing the quilt as one blue unit. Babies see red and black first anyway so for the baby, red is a good choice, too.
Also, the quilt is precious! Your applique is very well done. Love the Olaf nightclothes, too! |
