Spool off some thread, put in on a white piece of fabric and douse it via spray bottle with water. Put another fabric on top and cover with a slight weight (book). This will give you an idea of the quality of the thread. You could try several to test this to see which red to use. Good luck

Thanks! I wasn't worried about fading, but rather about bleeding. I don't want red streaks from the thread going across the white fabric.

I meant to say bleed - duh! Sometimes I say the darndest things. I have washed my redwork quilt and it didn't bleed at all.

Oh, you'll know! lol You can see them fine up close. The problem with a big contrast between thread and fabric, as others have mentioned, is that uneven stitches are glaringly obvious. Getting even stitches takes practice. Keep at it, you have a lovely quilt, hand quilting is a lot of fun! :)
