Luv Quilts and Cats 12-28-2010 04:44 PM

They are not required, but they certainly make it entertaining!

hperttula123 12-28-2010 04:51 PM

lol :).

pgthom 12-28-2010 05:17 PM

Definitely not....we are pet free and I manage just fine! A good friend to give you feedback is nice, maybe share a cup or glass of cheer for your successes. There are plenty available here for that job.

patimint 12-28-2010 05:26 PM

Some times the cat and/or the dog is the only one that appriciates what you have done. My dog has not complained about any of the quilts I have made.

Becca Bear 12-28-2010 06:18 PM

Absolutely necessary. They give their stamp of approval on everything and they don't care how the project turns out, as long as it's warm and comfy! Three cats and two dogs here. Couldn't imagine our lives without them. They are members of the family!

butterflies5518 12-28-2010 06:21 PM

I just read this post to my bf and as I have been asking for a kitten, (we already have the old dog), he said yes! woo-hoo spca here I come!

jaciqltznok 12-28-2010 06:25 PM

YES,,, their love of fabric choices, their ability to listen to the "language while we reverse stitch, all help us to quilt/create better!

Though my 3 dogs know to stop at that doorway and are not allowed in the sewing studio..thhehehehe

basketcru 12-28-2010 06:33 PM

Only if your quilts need to be cat-scanned!

rob529 12-28-2010 06:46 PM

A kitty cat is an absolute must. They are especially helpful for quality control.

cbuchanan 12-28-2010 07:16 PM

Looks that way to me!!!

My pets are all artwork ... not living pets ... just wood or metal or stone.

Since I have HQ and No living pets I don't have to keep them and their hair out of my quilting.

I pet sit when I need a 'fix' of a real pet.

dkabasketlady 12-28-2010 08:01 PM

Not required, but I sure do love my cat to be in my sewing room with me in case I need her design opinion, lol!!

Annz 12-28-2010 08:13 PM

If you love them then you have to have them.

I've actually taken my brother's dog to the dog park to get a "pet fix." I travel too much to keep a pet.

penski 12-28-2010 08:38 PM

ive done it both ways and there are some pros and cons !!!
without , i dont have anyone i have to share my sewing room with , trip over, clean up hairballs from, take material out of there mouth, yell at them to stop playing with that spool of thread, get off of that quilt, or wake them up from the comfy spot to go downstairs with me when im done sewing for the night, and to get out of the window !!! (there is a full lenght window in my sewing room upstairs and the dog can see everything going on in the neighborhood)
but i would miss all this if they were not here!!!

Prettiptibbs 12-28-2010 09:13 PM

No but my cat Moose thinks it is his right to inspect my work by taking a nap on anything quilted. So I wash my quilts before they leave the house.

DH has a cockatiel and if given a chance loves to remove pins. (He's really fast on top of it all!) Needless to say, I usually see him coming across the floor wings clipped and he uses his ladder very well) and by the time he gets to my lap, quilt has been put aside for the moment.
;-)

lynmccoy 12-28-2010 11:50 PM

No,you don't need a cat or dog. I have 2 black cats named Lilly and Loki that have their very own quilted cushions. But they are great company and Lilly lets me know when it is time for a petting break. When they want attention, they each wrap around my feet,so we stop work for a while and relax and hug each other.I personally think everyone should have a pet to relax with, but that's just my opinion. They don't want to get around the quilt I'm working. I turn the tv on the animal planet channel and they watch that all day while I work.It sounds crazy but they like it and keeps them busy. But I guess it sounds crazier that I turn on the tv for my cats, don't it?

ABSOLUTELY..................

Ditto! Who else is going to love EVERY thing you make no matter the color or pattern!!! Even if you don't like it.

I remember in 2007 I was taping my very first backing to the floor. The only place big enough to do this is in the family room. The dogs were both watching me do this. Crawling around and what not. As soon as I moved up further and there was backing behind me, already taped, Dugan laid down on it. Not a minute had gone by!!!! Boy I miss him. These memories help!

A pet will make your life complete. Where else, except from God, will you get so much unconditional love?

Sewingyankee 12-29-2010 01:08 PM

I don't have any pets, but I have 3 granddogs that come to visit and stay for quite awhile. I also have 2 grand cats that I go to visit. Love them all. They love to be in my studio under my feet. LOL

mjsylvstr 12-29-2010 01:22 PM

I hope not !!!!!!!!!

SCGreatGran 12-29-2010 02:16 PM

Love this topic... lots of smiles reading all the pets antics.

Believe me ! YOU DON"T! I'm not a pet lover and I often wonder how some of these people can stand to have those furry creatures around their sewing all the time. I don't mean to be rude or heartless. I suppose it's a personal thing. Either you love them or you don't. I don't.

Yesterday I went sale shopping. I saw a couple of cute sweaters and both of them had an image of a cat on them. The sales person kept showing me these garments with animals on them. Finally I told her I had enough of the cats. Please, no cats.

I do know that some people do get very attached to their pets. And that's admirable, but just not for me. Now I hope you all won't hate me.

We won't hate you, but we will wonder about you!. Just kidding, if you are a pet lover, ya can't live with out them, but if you are not a pet person, ya can't live with them.

Thanks!! But I LOVE kids! And I've got them all around me most of the time! I even pull neighborhood kids off the street to tutor. If I know they're having problems with a subject, I have them visit me so I can help them (along with their parents' permission of course.) So I think I'd say they are my "pets."

Quilter a-go-go 12-30-2010 01:40 PM

definitely!
besides, you can take all those practice blocks, wonky blocks and ones that didn't quite work out and make kitty -or doggie - quilts

barefoot quilter 12-30-2010 02:19 PM

i have both pet and grandkid at home and they both keep me inline with my sewing/quilting

Ditto!!! I talk to them and answer for them. Don't know what I would do without them for company.

nrt211 12-31-2010 10:46 AM

Pets are not required to be a successful quilter; however, they can add an awesome quality to life!!

lynmccoy 12-31-2010 04:38 PM

I read in some magazine that I can't remember the name of that pets are good stress reducers. I know that mine are.I have MS and if I'm having really bad day with pain or if I have had a seizure,my cats seem to know it,and they sit close to me and act like they are offering me their love and comfort. If you don't like furry friends, maybe you might try fish. My granddaughter and I have a 55 gallon gallon tank with at least 20 different colors of fancy guppies. It's is also relaxing to sit in my rocking chair beside of the fireplace and watch the fish with Lilly in my lap and Loki around my feet. Well,I don't really know what part is the most relaxing, the fish, the cats, the rocking chair, the fireplace,or everything combined.

Mary Marie 12-31-2010 04:44 PM

We have 2 inside puppies, an inside/outside cat and an outside dog that is inside right now because she is so old the weather is getting to her bones. They just lay at my feet while I sew or craft. Yes, they make us laugh and I just love having them around. Required? not! Wanted? YES!

They don't make me a better sewing/crafty person, but they make me a better person all around.

Oh how funny! I spend all day many days alone with my dogs. And, as much as I love to admit it, I'm a chatterer. I love to talk. I've heard it's because I love the sound of my own voice. I have to question that one, but anyway, I talk to my dogs all day as if they are people. Doesn't everyone?

MomtoBostonTerriers 01-09-2011 07:50 PM

You need a Boston Terrier to be a really good quilter.

Sandi Furtado 01-19-2011 02:05 PM

No, you do not!!! I am allergic to both animals and I quilt all the time plus teach a class and help out teaching another class. I guess animals are an added bonus.

I think that's a great statement; just like we all prefer different types of notions, and different fabrics, different mascots are acceptable too! :-D
