As of pipsquek:

Average age of respondents is 55!

Over 600 people responded. Not all of you gave your age and some where duplicate post. Some replied to others post.

The youngest was adorabowe at 20 and the oldest is Betty Boop's mom at 90. Fern Anderson was next at 85.

There were 9 under 20 that various people included in their reply.

Breakdown by age:

20's 9
30's 24
40's 80
50's 186
60's 185
70's 90
80's 12
90's 1

susanpillsbury thanks for the chuckle.

That was fun! I will do another pole next week! I will ask at what age did you start quilting. Would love to see how long/short those of you have been quilting.

Thanks to all those who wanted to help knock some sense into my man. 22 years married and I can handle him. I was just curious myself about the age. Love to all!

I went to quilt with the ladies at church Monday. The oldest quilter there was 94. They make lap robes for nursing home and small blankets for children.

Jammin' Jane 04-28-2011 11:43 AM

Thanks for compiling the info. It's remarkable that quilting is enjoyable to so many people!

CarrieAnne 04-28-2011 11:44 AM

Thanks, I always wondered!

Blue's quilting mama 04-28-2011 11:47 AM

Thanks for the summary.....loved reading it!

justflyingin 04-28-2011 11:47 AM

What's more amazing is that so many "older" ladies are reading the internet forums. Wow.

olgaflowers 04-28-2011 12:07 PM

I am a young 49, and It saddens Me when I run into
so many ladies in their 70's saying they always wanted
to learn to quilt, just wish one wouldn't wait so long.
Just wanted to get that off my chest !

Kat Sews 04-28-2011 12:14 PM

looks like the age curve follows the baby boom curve.

spartan quilter 04-28-2011 12:36 PM

I feel pretty good, because at 67, I fall into one of the larger groups of quilters. And I would say that you are never too old to learn. I have been putting blocks together for years, but this board has helped me so much in learning tricks to make putting those blocks together easier. I really don't call myself a quilter, because I don't get the hang of FMQ, and am too impatient to practice, practice, practice, when I can be sewing more tops, so all of my pieces are SID. It works for me.

ptquilts 04-28-2011 12:36 PM

wow, I am almost average!

roseOfsharon 04-28-2011 12:37 PM

This was fun and quite interesting! Thanks and I look forward to anymore surveys! :)

Elisabethann 04-28-2011 12:44 PM

I think that one of the reasons the majority are in their 50's & 60's is because they finally have the time ! I didn't answer originally - didn't see the post until the results were tallied. I am 44. My mother was a sew-er and a pretty good one too. I did some sewing in my late 20's and early 30's - a few easy pattern skirts and shorts and some easy baby quilts. My last child is 4 yrs old and in school every morning. I am just finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and finally have a chunk of time to get some things done. I am finding it difficult to get someone to go to classes with me though :( it is more fun with a friend!

grammy17 04-28-2011 02:13 PM

"I think that one of the reasons the majority are in their 50's & 60's is because they finally have the time !"

I am amazed at the young mothers who are able to find time to quilt. I think of Leah Day who posts her demos. God Bless you All.

pjemark 04-28-2011 04:14 PM

Wow! That was really interesting.

nativetexan 04-28-2011 04:34 PM

does that make most of us old? yep! that's Ok though. with age comes wisdom!

Dina 04-28-2011 04:37 PM

This is really interesting!!

Great-great granny 04-28-2011 06:43 PM

Thanks for the REALLY INTERESTING SURVEY. And amazing there is one 90! Congrats to her - bet she has quilted many years.

chatonne40 04-29-2011 03:47 AM

Hum does this mean that the fifties and sixties are considered old age?
May be we should ask for a government that will pay old age pension starting at 50?
Guess I can keep dreaming this morning right? haha

Marty K 04-29-2011 05:13 AM

that WAS really fun!!! keep the polls going...what a special group of "friends" on this board!!!!!! :)

Jshep 04-29-2011 05:22 AM

This just goes to show you, from 20 to 90, we all have something in common. How fun. What a great group we are.

j 04-29-2011 05:36 AM

That took work and I enjoyed reading the results. Thanks. -J.

hoppa 04-29-2011 06:07 AM

Thank you for posting the results as this was interesting.

Hoppa

sewbizgirl 04-29-2011 06:15 AM

I think you mean "poll"...

Thanks for compiling the info. I think Elizabethann is right, the large numbers in their 50's and 60's is because we finally have the time! When I was younger I had to sew for my kids, then sew for work. Now I can finally quilt.

Holice 04-29-2011 06:31 AM

I am not sure I want to reveal my age other than "somewhere between ""birth and death", in the words of Vera from the movie Aunti Mame". But I bet I might be the oldest on the board. Enough said.

charhend 04-29-2011 06:35 AM

YES, that was fun to see the differences in the ages. I agree with everyone that those of us in our 50's and 60's finally have the spare time to devote to our love of quilting. Will be waiting for the next survey!

bookfare 04-29-2011 07:09 AM

How about another "poll"? I don't climb very easily at my age. LOL--you know I'm kidding!

SewMomma66 04-29-2011 07:19 AM

Oops! Yes I mean poll.

Karo 04-29-2011 07:28 AM

Should have included my Mom who is 90; still piecing and doing embroidery work--without glasses! Doesn't do the internet thing though.
By the way, you didn't post your husband's age! Wonder if he thinks of himself as OLD? Does he not have a hobby that he enjoys doing with his friends? If not, you should teach him how to do quilts; we old ladies would welcome him to the board..

lillybeck 04-29-2011 07:29 AM

Thanks for the answer.

BettyGee 04-29-2011 07:56 AM

I missed the original question, but I'm checking in at 70! I made all my son's clothes until he needed pants with zippers, still made pj and shirts. Tried quilting, but after I went back to work full time there just wasn't time. Now I'm retired, 70 years young and loving every minute I spend in my sewing sanctuary.

The ladies in my craft club are in their 80s and I'm one of the "babies." We do all kinds of crafts, have some of the best cooks in Colorado and enjoy just being together. You are never to old to learn something new.

Thanks for doing the poll, very interesting and fun.

caspharm 04-29-2011 08:30 AM

That was interesting. It actually seems to mirror the people I have seen at guild and the LQS.

Joanie2 04-29-2011 09:09 AM

Wow! It's amazing to see the number of us who responded. This is a large group of quilters. For me personally, I am so happy that being in my 50's I am in the majority. Makes be feel really nestled in and comfortable. It's also wonderful knowing that more and more younger girls (and a few young men) are becoming interested in this wonderful world of quilting. We know quilting will go on for many generations to come. Thanks for taking the pole. I enjoyed reading all of the posts thoroughly.

gramquilter2 04-29-2011 11:02 AM

Thanks, I thought this was an interesting topic.

charity-crafter 04-29-2011 11:13 AM

How about another poll about at what age we started quilting?

gale 04-29-2011 11:25 AM

I missed that thread but I'm happy to be below average on this one. lol

Stitchit123 04-29-2011 11:58 AM

And there are still more who haven't found this wonderful link YET Next weeks poll should be an eye opener as to the years all added together I'm sure it'll blow us all away

SewMomma66 04-29-2011 12:34 PM

I will do a new poll next week and leave it open longer. Lots of people had fun!
