don't be embarrassed, sunnyhope. you should watch me in the grocery store, trying to figure out how many ounces there are in something marked in metric. i'm totally and hopelessly confused by the whole system.

i am gettin better at inches but those small numbers really confuses me and in this country we use cm and km when we drive, not miles and we use grams and kg instead of ounches and stuff so its a bit of a change to be honest

I just searched WIDE RIC RAC and found some at this site that is 18mm (3/4 inch) http://www.ribbonsgalore.com.au/shop...ort=20a&page=2

1/4 = 2/8 and therefore it is less than (smaller than) 3/8

Think of 3/8 as bigger than a 1/4 but less than 1/2

I do have the same problem as you, sunnyhope. I got a ruler with inches to make quilts with the pattern from USA.

1/8 inch = 0.125 inch = 3.175 mm
2/8 inch = 1/4 inch = 0.250 inch = 6.35 mm
3/8 inch = 0.375 inch = 9.525 mm
4/8 inch = 2/4 inch = 1/2 inch = 0.500 inch = 12.70 mm
5/8 inch = 0.625 inch = 15.875 mm
6/8 inch = 3/4 inch = 0.750 inch = 19.05 mm
7/8 inch = 0.875 inch = 22.225 mm
8/8 inch = 4/4 inch = 2/2 inch = 1.000 inch = 25.4 mm

more detail than you probably wanted - formatting/spacing disappears when submitted
