rip ir or leave it???

I am trying to do some appliqué on a baby quilt, I'm not real good at this but I do try. Do you think I should rip some of the stitches out, there not real smooth looking, there are three places that to me they don't look the greatest, but even if I do rip them out I may still end up with the quilt looking the same, as I said I am not real good at this part,

Also would you add some more to the design, like maybe some flowers or whatever? Thanks

barny 01-26-2016 11:34 AM

I wouldn't rip it out. By the time it is washed, It will look just fine, Applique isn't easy. The quilt is really, really pretty.

Doggramma 01-26-2016 11:37 AM

I wouldn't rip it out either. It looks fine. Cute quilt!

notmorecraft 01-26-2016 11:37 AM

Remember you are looking at it from a couple of inches away, others will be looking from a couple of feet, I would leave it I think it is beautiful

Crqltr 01-26-2016 11:44 AM

Adorable! I don't appliqué as well as some either! I wouldn't rip it out. If I have parts that don't match up I try to match the thread with a fabric pen and color it in... Can't tell as long as you are careful with the coloring.

kathy 01-26-2016 11:45 AM

I don't think anyone can flawlessly execute the satin stitch without an embroidery machine doing it for them. It will be much easier on you if you just go with a fairly tight zigzag, the small bits of fuzz that peek out give it character!

PaperPrincess 01-26-2016 11:53 AM

Cute, cute, cute! I also would not rip anything out, but probably would go over the area where the tail meets the body in the middle picture to even it up & make sure that edge is secured.

ManiacQuilter2 01-26-2016 11:59 AM

Adorable quilt. Are you using your walking foot?? I have gone over zig zag applique again to smooth it out but I don't know if this is just one pass on yours. Usually I do a strip piece to get my stitch length where is should be. It is not as easy to do as it may look.

cjsews 01-26-2016 12:06 PM

So cute. No I would not tear it out. I don't think it needs anything else on it. If you want to add some more , I would appliqué some paw prints on the quilt.

quiltlady1941 01-26-2016 12:06 PM

Thanks everyone, I was wondering this, if I could just sew over it to make it look better, but didn't know if it would look better or worse, guess I can give it a try...Thanks everyone for your help

I think it looks fine -- leave it as it is. That puppy is so cute!

bearisgray 01-26-2016 12:39 PM

Cute design. There is one spot that l

Sharonquilts 01-26-2016 12:50 PM

Adorable quilt. You are better with applique than I am. But to be honest, I would rip out the section that doesn't line up (like on the tail). Keep practicing. Yours look much, much better than mine. Sometimes I try too hard and make it worse. Ha.

zozee 01-26-2016 01:00 PM

It all looks fine except that one spot that others have mentioned. It's still not terrible, by any means. But I would carefully rip out that small section where tail meets body, and try to line it up with the rest of that curve. For stitches that tight and thick, I find a razor blade does the best job. Sharp and easy to control, and can slice thru many threads at once. Be very careful, though.

Tartan 01-26-2016 01:54 PM

It is harder to appliqué stitch over a pieced backing. He looks pretty darn cute in the picture. Up to you if you try to fix the one spot that's bothering you but I try not to redo satin stitching because the needle punctures weaken the background fabric in my opinion.

suern3 01-26-2016 03:37 PM

I think this such a cute quilt! I love your piecing and fabric choices. Your puppy is cute as can be and I would not try to change any of the satin stitching. I agree with Tartan as far as trying to redo satin stitching. I tried taking some out once and it was very difficult and turned into kind of a mess. The over-all look of your quilt is so cute just as it is.

BTW Quiltinglady, I have learned to like doing machine applique and have done quite a bit in quilts and wall hangings, etc, but never with satin stitch since that first experience, LOL. Usually do fusible with button hole stitch on my machine or a simple raw edge. There are so many ways to applique.

Material Witness 01-26-2016 05:41 PM

Very nice. No, don't worry about those tiny character memos. Looks great!

dluvs2quilt 01-26-2016 05:50 PM

I would leave it alone. I love your puppy he is so cute!!

I agree completely. That one place where the tail and body join - I would look very closely at that and maybe do some more over-stitching, as once this is washed, if you didn't get an edge secured well, it will fray and fuzz up. Which would not necessarily be a bad thing, if it was intentional (would possibly look like the dog's fur maybe?).

Anyway, I would not rip. And yes, it is definitely cute, cute, CUTE!!

I would not rip anything out. I think your quilt is simply adorable.

crafty-kid 01-26-2016 07:09 PM

Very cute! I would leave it as is.

faykilgore 01-26-2016 07:12 PM

That is too adorable! Yours is much better than mine is! DO NOT RIP! It's a baby quilt. They by definition endure amazing abuse and washing and are rarely laying flat to be critiqued.

QuiltnNan 01-26-2016 07:32 PM

granted, the closeups could use some improvement. but the distant shots look just fine... your puppy is so cute.

quiltsRfun 01-26-2016 07:35 PM

It's fine, a very cute design and well done. Close examination will always reveal irregularities but the baby will never notice.

lisalovesquilting 01-26-2016 07:46 PM

Your quilt is very cute. I love applique but never had any luck with the satin stitch. Now I use the blanket stitch and like it much better.

sewingsuz 01-26-2016 09:33 PM

I think it looks very good. don't touch it! Great Job!

Bree123 01-26-2016 09:54 PM

Super cute! I'd leave it. It's barely noticeable.

For future reference:
(1) If you didn't window your fusible webbing, make sure to do that. It was the biggest reason why I'd get those bubbles. Windowing means cutting away the middle of the webbing so you just have 1/4" to 1/2" of fusible around the edge of the applique shape. Pat Sloan demos it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_m84NtcyUk

(2) A tear-away paper stabilizer will help prevent the tiny puckers from forming around the outside of the stitching

I also make sure to pre-wash everything & limit how much starch I use as sizing/starch can affect how evenly the fusible bonds. That said, it is still a beautiful quilt. I wouldn't go over the applique stitching any more. Once the whole thing is quilted, the focus will be on the quilting & the cute little dog, not on the tiny imperfections we all have in our quilts. :)

ruby2shoes 01-26-2016 10:44 PM

Leave it...it's really sweet.

DOTTYMO 01-26-2016 11:05 PM

No I would definately not rip it out. The baby will love the quilt and puppy and not complain..

QuiltnLady1 01-26-2016 11:46 PM

Very cute!! I would not rip it out -- I usually stitch it twice to get it smooth (and I put a piece of tissue or tear away stabilizer under it when I do the second stitching. I have a special food for doing the zigzag stitch that keeps it from flattening (it came with my machine).

It looks perfect and made with love. Leave it and gift it happily. You did a fabulous job.

mary r 01-27-2016 03:02 AM

Cute quilt. THe baby won't know and it's hard to see from a distance. You did a great job!.

Linda1 01-27-2016 04:17 AM

I would leave it. Your quilt isnbeautiful

quilterpurpledog 01-27-2016 04:31 AM

Your quilt is very happy looking. That puppy is really cute. I would not try to take it out because you would distort and even destroy the edges of the applique pieces and they would look far worse with the redo. No one but you is really going to be aware of the problem. I would guess that the problems occurred by not keeping the needle down when turning corners or pausing when stitching. I know your quilt will be loved and appreciated just the way it is.

Kris P 01-27-2016 04:44 AM

Wow, that is super-cute! I wouldn't rip it, but like Paper Princess and Maniac Quilter suggested, just go over parts that my concern you.
What a fun way to use a small amount of novelty fabric to make a fun quilt!

romanojg 01-27-2016 04:44 AM

I agree, I would not rip them out. Once its washed and fluffs up it'll all blend in. One thing that I've learned, is that we may see every mistake that we make but most others don't. My boss thinks I should enter my quilts into a show, I know the mistakes and know that I'm no where close to that. Even though I'd be excited to win a quilt show I wouldn't want the pressure of creating a quilt to show, it would take the fun out of it. You did a great job and it will be well loved

copycat 01-27-2016 05:07 AM

So Sweet. Leave everything the way it is. This Puppy just looks like he has been playing and has ruffled his fur.

eparys 01-27-2016 05:38 AM

The quilt is adorable - I would leave it. Once it is washed you will not notice it (imho).

Reba'squilts 01-27-2016 05:59 AM

Cute quilt...when it is washed it will not be noticeable. I would leave it as is.
