I’ve decided to go with maudeflanagan’s idea.
I’m now busy making a simple pinwheel block from matching colours to go in the centre. I’ve been trying to decide what to do with this panel for ages and I got the answer here this afternoon. Thank you! |

I should mention that I did not come up with the idea originally. There was a lot/pattern available on Craftsy at one point that utilized the panel in nearly the same way. Since the kit sold old, the pattern was no longer available. I tried to purchase the pattern from Craftsy, but their customer service told me that it wasn’t possible. I ended up just doing the math and figuring out the pattern for myself.

I'm working on a churn dash quilt using some printed panel squares. They are entirely different, but this old fashioned block lends itself to this kind of thing because you can use any size square in the middle. The 4 rail blocks are then cut the same length as the sides of the square, and the corners are the same dimension as the ends of the rails. In my case, I used 2 1/2" rails, and made 2 hst's as a time starting with 5" squares. I trimmed the hst's just a smidge, which is the only way they ever turn out really square for me, anyway. If you cut them 5 1/4" you'd have more leeway, but I had a lot of 5" squares to use, and that worked. I just finished making 28 of these, no two exactly alike. If your panel doesn't have enough for the size quilt you want, you can place something like hourglass blocks or snowballs between them.
