Have you ever seen one of these? I got one from my FIL. It was my MIL's and it has been sitting in the garage for years. I brought it to the house and cleaned it up and fired that baby up today. Oh boy!!!! It works like a charm. My Ironing will be a breeze from here on out.

I haven't seen one of them!
Can you post a photo of it! Please!

Hey kwhite! Did you forget something?

I believe they are very good. Have fun!
Wow, I googled it too, that is quite a machine!!! Lucky You :D:D:D
I tried googling, but didn't come up. Can you send a pic please.
I'd love one of those!
Can I come over and play with it too? |
Back in the 50's my Mom's friend had one of these but it was much bigger I think this one would be wonderful if you had the room.
Mom had one years ago. I saw one on an estate sale last weekend. I didn't buy it, I bought vintage hankies instead.
I Googled and found this one - it would be great for ironing yardage.
http://www.sewingmachine-sales.co.uk...-press-51.html Mind you, the price was hefty. |
ok k where is a picture of it
K, how old is the one you have? I am 71, and my mom had one from the early 30's. I can remember using it when I was very young to iron pillowcases and dishtowels. Yeah, back in those days they ironed everything!
pic please.
That's a great find!
My mother-in-law had one of these. I got married in 1960 that is when I seen her use it. My sister-in-law has it now she offered it to me a couple of years ago I never took it.It is in her basement maybe I will check it out
The ones I saw in the 50's were called mangles and had two rollers and much larger than the one someone put a link to.I think they were used in dry cleaner places. I only press fabrics, stopped ironing clothes years ago when poly/cotton or permanent press clothes came out, all we wear now.
You're right! OUr next door neighbor had a mangle back in the 50's. I guess what goes around comes around, eh?
Well, I am only 54, and since my mother ironed EVERYTHING, we had one. Double roller and we were able to sit down & iron. I just remember having to be very careful about the fingers...rolling under the bars, Ouch! & if you were ironing polyester, turn the heat WAY down. I think this was the machine that ruined my favorite pair of forest green poly slacks. It did make it quick though to run things through the machine. Now that I think about it I wonder if my Dad bought it to help make my life easier? I wouldn't have put it past him.
Have fun with yours, Susan |
Lucky girl!! Ironing is NOT my favorite thing to do!! Looks like a real time saver.
Lucky you! I would love one of those!
My mom had one of these when I was a kid. It was called a mangle then.
Ok, now I know what you are talking about.
My DH's aunt has one. She sewed all her own clothes, drapes, curtains, etc. and used this for all of the pressing of her fabric. |

Here is my baby. I can see why they call them Mangles. It took some getting used to to get things rolling smoothly.
My Mom had one- she needed it as my dad always wore those cotton oxford-cloth shirts to work (he was a professor). Easier that ironing on the inside and then the outside, as I was taught, to get the wrinkies out. Ironrite was the brand I think.

Quiltmom if you ever used one you would have no doubt where the name came from.
Maybe the name mangle came from what happened to your fingers when they got in the way?
My mom had one when I was young. Don't know what happened to it.
We had a mangle(that is what we called it) and many of our neighbors did too. I miss the wonderful feel or ironed sheets. In the summer they were hung on the line outside and smelled wonderful(I do that in the summer), but in the winter because they were hung in the basement, they were ironed. I still iron my pillowcases, but not the sheeets.

I got one from my Husband's grandmother. I ironed everything-levi's sheets you name it. As things got to be "permanent press" I didn't use it as much. My Husband thought it was in the way and sent it to the thrift store. It did take a little getting used to but was wonderful! We called ours and Ironrite because that was the brand.

how does it work? does the roller thing get hot? or the desk part of it? both?
does the fabric go out the back as you slide it in through the front? you should rent out ironing time like they do on quilters. lucky you  |
I kind of looks like the one that my Grandma (and I'm in my 70's) had when I was in high school. I never got to run it but she could do about anything on it. She called it a mangle iron.

I just asked my mom (who has five of these machines) if any of hers roll backwards and she said no. She owns a laundry drop off business and uses hers mainly to iron pants and things like that. I don't think she could run the business with out at least one!
I learned to iron on a Mangle - my mom insisted that all the sheets etc be ironed (ug) - I could even iron shirts on them.
They are fantastic - Lucky you!! |
Wow! I have never even heard one of these before. Lucky girl!
my Mom had one and they called it a mangle. When we cleaned out the property we gave it to goodwill. Darn I was afraid to use it because it was so old. i should have given it a try to see if it still worked. I could sure use it now.
