What do you all think of those rolls of fabric strips that they are selling now? At first I thought it was stupid, but then I realized that one could cut out most of a quilt out of those strips, if one plans it out. I think I may like that idea. Have any of you used these yet? And what did you decide about them?

BarbC 08-30-2007 08:47 PM

I'm like you. At first I thought they were a waste, but then I have been thinking about a fall log cabin and I need 2 1/2" strips and I saw a jelly roll of fall fabrics and I thought... hey that would save me a lot of time! So I may give them a try. Barb C

SandraJennings 08-30-2007 08:56 PM

For strip quilts, log cabins and for squares...most of the work is done...just sew sew sew.....gotta like that. :D

amma 08-30-2007 10:47 PM

I have been buying 6 inch strips off of ebay and if it is fabric that I really like, I buy 2 and can get them in 12 inch pieces then, also. I like them as I can get a 6" X 22 foot section for $2.25 to 3.25 each.

patricej 08-31-2007 02:40 AM

i can definitely see the attraction, but that adds up to $39 a yard. yeeps!

i'm strill trying to wrap my brain around the price of fat quarters. this one will take a whole new drug.

PurplePassion 08-31-2007 03:35 AM

Patrice,
Yep I think your kitty just fainted again!

Norah 08-31-2007 05:14 AM

For $39 a yard, I can strip my own fabric. I like the concept though, I think. What I want to know is, how do they strip something that long without elbows and geegaws? I would have to tear it, and to save that much, it gives a whole new meaning to rip-it.

ButtercreamCakeArtist 08-31-2007 05:51 AM

I can strip in my own yard for free...oh, wait...different stripping and yards...
It's all good for me bc I can strip and and SELL IT! (and I mean FABRIC!) hehehe! Would I pay that for them? um, NO!

ButtercreamCakeArtist 08-31-2007 05:52 AM

But, yes Norah, they are nice. I agree. It would save sooo much time cutting! And you could get a whole bundle or roll with a theme! Already ready, already!

danna738 08-31-2007 06:00 AM

Any product made to save time, costs more. You just have to figure out how much your time is worth and decide if the price reflects the value of your time. Personally, I think jelly rolls of fabric are worth the price if the fabric is of good quality. Just think of the time you save -- no matching or figuring out color schemes, no prewashing or pressing (I hope?), no cutting. It is like a 7-11 of quilting!

amma 08-31-2007 09:31 AM

Is my math that far off? If a 6 inch X 22 foot strip (264 inches) wouldn't it break down to: 12in X 132 in, 24in X 66 in, 48in X33in which is pretty close to a yard of fabric (36 in X 44 in) for $2.25-$3.25 Six of these strips are $13.50 Which is the equivalent of 1 yard X 7.333 yards

quiltmaker101 08-31-2007 10:38 AM

I like the jelly roll sets idea, but like Patrice, I find the price too hard to swallow. However, I would like to be the one selling them!

I saved all the scraps from my daughter's black and white quilt and cut them to the same width. They are not the same length, but I have been rolling them and at some point when I don't have 30 other quilts in my brain, I will just start sewing as they come off the roll and see what I get. My first stab at free form quilting. If it works out well, I plan to do this with all my scrap strips.

It does tend to remind me of building a rubber band ball though. LOL

Knot Sew 08-31-2007 10:43 AM

how many would like to swap strips, How many do you get at a time? It would be pretty scrapy. I'm going to check on ebay and see what they have

What I've seen on Ebay is 44 2 1/2 x 44 inch strips, which by my math comes to almost 2 1/2 yards. If I won it at the current price it comes out to almost $8 a yard plus shipping.

I guess it depends on what price you get it at and how much shipping costs.

i see NOW what your wrote, but at o'dark this morning, i though it said 6 inches by 22 inches.

a 22 foot long continuous strip of fabric. whoda thunk it?

let me make sure i've processed correctly this time. strips are 6 inches wide and 22 feet long (just over a yard and a quarter if you cut them into 42 inch sections and lined them up). each strip costs between $2.25 and $3.25. soooooooooo it's about $2 or $3 per yard. did i get it right this time?

i hope so, because i like THAT math much better. think i'll go wake up kitty. gonna share the link to your source? PWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE?

nor'easter 08-31-2007 11:44 AM

Jelly Roll strips on line are 2½" x 42" and there are usually 40 of them packaged together for around $30. That works out to $10.80 per yard. Compared to $8.50 per yard for flat yardage of the same fabric it's high, but nowhere near $39 per yard! (I priced moda jelly rolls at fat quarter shop). I'd still rather prewash and cut after, at least for functional quilts.

quiltmaker101 08-31-2007 11:54 AM

I know what you mean about washing already cut pieces Nor'easter! I found out how tough that is after the fabric squares swap.

It was not so bad after I started washing them in a garment bag and ironed carefully, but I think the squares will all have to be recut to make them the same size.

I am making my own strip rolls for later. This means they are already washed and ironed!

If a person doesn't want the hassle of all those strip tangled together and having to iron or recut them, swap with Ruth using only preshrunk fabrics.

Minda 08-31-2007 01:51 PM

I haven't bought any strips yet, but I think they would be a great convenience.

amma 08-31-2007 02:50 PM

Patrice you scared the dickens out of my pocket book  Had me spitting coffee everywhere  I would not pay $39 a yard for any fabric   Yes it is 22 feet long, not 22 inches..... I know what you mean about mornings before coffee

Here is the link, check out the fabrics, some are 100% cotton some are blends, etc... She advertises them for rag rugs, but I have ordered numerous ones from her for myself and others and they have always been cut very well. She is also great about answering questions in a timely manner, too. She does run sales from time to time, too. I just purchased a 42 inch piece X 21 foot piece from her for a friend that was a beautiful floral that she is using to make curtains out of. $14.07 for the fabric and $5.99 shipping. She was very happy with the fabric! Another bonus is if you order 2 strips of the same, she will cut them into (3) 4 inch strips for you, free of charge..... Even more convenient!!!!!!

Knot Sew 08-31-2007 02:55 PM

To funny I just posted this in links and resources. Are the strips she has for rugs good for quilts. I saw one with dasies I liked. :D :D :D I've just read the rest of your post.......great for squares. I have bought cranston befor, :D like it

amma 08-31-2007 03:03 PM

Like minds.... :D yes it is the same seller, however really look close at the descriptions here on this page, some of these fabrics in this portion are not full 1 yard cuts..... some are only 22 inches by 36. The link I posted was strictly the strips.
She carries name brands, (advertised as such) and some non name brands that I have bought were as good or better than what I have bought at WM.

Knot Sew 08-31-2007 03:31 PM

The strips for rugs are a good price, is that good fabric.......I was thinking the print was off....... or color or runs... :?:

CassandraE 08-31-2007 03:51 PM

amma i love this seller i have bought from her 2x so far and her shipping rates are great can't beat the price of the fabric either.

cassandra

CassandraE 08-31-2007 03:53 PM

ruth i have bought from that seller 2xs and i have not had any problems with running colors or fading ect. she also will cut them down to different widths for you for free!!!!!!

Cathe 08-31-2007 03:55 PM

You couldn't prewash them (at least not well) and I wonder if they are really quite on the grainline. Are they sold for making those craft projects where you wind fabric strips around clothesline and then shape baskets and potholders and placemats?

Knot Sew 08-31-2007 04:03 PM

Well I for one I am going to buy some.......Some of the fabic looks really nice. I am going to order several strips I'll let you know when I get it. :D

patricej 08-31-2007 04:33 PM

well ... i just ordered some. 30 feet ... just under a yard and a half. 220 thread count cotton. $2.79. three of those and a yard of something else. $16.95 roughly $3.25 per yard including shipping. i can live with that. :P

i almost never prewash and i doubt i cut perfectly on the grain myself, so that isn't an issue for me, either.

3incollege 08-31-2007 04:59 PM

Well I have bought them , and love the idea.
I think it is great that you can get a sample of every colorwave that moda makes it that collection.
I have bought 2 so far. They make patterns that are designed for them.
I paid $30 per Jelly Roll . there are 40 strips in a roll, so that is 2.78 yards. Which comes to $10.79 a yard. So that is a little than a $1(moda's run about $9.60) more per yard. It's a great idea.

Patrice made a mistake! Patrice made a mistake! Mwahahahah!
(now I know I'm not alone in this world!) hehehehe!

amma 08-31-2007 08:41 PM

The first time I seen the fabric strips, I too had misread the length :? I thought it was 20+ inches not feet. I had to reread it and then I thought wow, that is a good price, and I had already had many cups of coffee

I went back and looked at the strips I have bought and they seem to be cut straight on the grain, and I really could not find anything wrong with them. I bought the pink and the orange floral strips for a home dec project, I believe they are a blend, but you would have to email Lorri and find out for sure. I have several strips of the watercolor type and am very pleased with all of those. The biggest piece was the multi colored roses and blue flowers on a deep navy background and that is beautiful fabric. For the Quilts that I had in mind for some of this material I bought multiple strips and the widths are 18-24 inches wide, so that I could pre wash them.
We have not had any issues with bleeding or color fading. If you have any other questions ask, and I will try and answer them for you.

Moonpi 09-01-2007 05:40 AM

I buy from lorrie, too - she is quick to answer questions about fabric content, and laser cuts fabric as small as 1" wide at no additional charge. She also carries watercolor fabrics. I have always been pleased with things I've gotten from her. I pre-wash lengths in the sink and hang to dry, and have had no problems. I have her in my Favorites

Edited to correct - the secret of all that true grain cutting is not laser or die cutting - It is her hubby! Gotta love that teamwork.

Laser cutting is a commercial technique used in certain applications to cut through stacks of stuff, leaving each precisely alike, Very intricate cutouts can be found in gift shops with wood cut so thin as to resemble lace, all done with lasers

[quote=ButtercreamCakeArtist]I can strip in my own yard for free...oh, wait...different stripping and yards...quote]]

Miranda, What are you putting in your coffee??!! You are getting a little on the wild side lately. I love it!

Also, What is laser cutting, Moonpi?

mimisharon 09-01-2007 06:38 AM

I will say, since I'm just getting here after 2 pots of coffee...........I'm damned confused

BUT if any of you have the math right on the $2 or $3 a yard I'll take those jelly rolls to save my back aching.

HOWEVER, I don't want $39 a yard stuff. It would likely melt my wallet.....

Miranda, you been hitting Kathy's bottle??? Stripping in the yard may be ok for some but this old lady is past that stuff. My closet doesn't even seem safe enough for that!!

patricej 09-01-2007 06:38 AM

apparently, Miranda has found both her oats and the joys of feelin' them.

ButtercreamCakeArtist 09-01-2007 06:48 AM

 My yard might just be safe enough. We're in the middle of nowhere, but I wouldn't really do that! (Well, not unless I had the chance.)
I'm just happy!
What?! Kathy has a bottle? Where does she keep it hid?! haha!
I'm not with it today, though....no coffee, yet...

amma 09-03-2007 02:23 PM

Lorri is having a 3 day sale on her fabric strips ( the ones that are 21+ feet long) and yardage, just thought I would share her email with any who are interested.

Norah 09-03-2007 03:32 PM

I cannot resist a sale. Move over, gals, I'm coming through!!

amma 09-03-2007 03:43 PM

been there and done that already

patricej 09-04-2007 01:40 PM

i got my first order today. the fabric will be a challenge to work with because it's reeeeelllyy soft. but it's such a nice, silky soft i may just roll around in it and forget all about using it in quilts. LOL

very even weave. definitely cut on the straight of grain. colors and prints exactly as shown on the website. and speedy, reasonably charged delivery to boot!

if this stuff is seconds, i don't care if i ever get firsts. :-)

amma 09-04-2007 05:51 PM

I am so glad you liked your order Patrice :D It is fun to share sales, good sites, etc... with everyone! I have picked up lots of fabric this way and I like it when you get a recommendation and don't have to fly blind.
You just enjoy your self and roll in your new fabric, just don't get mummified LOL
